Drivers can dodge £200 fine and six penalty points after Google reveals major change for millions of cars across UK

GOOGLE is set to allow drivers to play videos through their car's smart dashboard - even when the vehicle is in motion.
But the tech giant is plotting a new measure that would stop the feature from becoming a serious distraction to drivers.

Videos currently only work on Android Auto - Google's in-car entertainment system that allows people to connect their Android phones to their vehicles - when the vehicle is parked.
But that's about to change.
Google is planning on making streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and YouTube available on Android Auto, according to a report from T3, even when the car is in drive.
However, watching videos through your car's entertainment system while driving could land you six penalty points on your licence, or a £200 fine.
You can even lose your licence if you passed your driving test within the last two years.
Fortunately, Google is working on a feature that will make videos switch automatically between a video and an audio mode when the car moves.
That means that the clip is cut off the moment the vehicle is in motion - and drivers can instead tune into the audio.
This will work well for video podcasts and sports games - where visuals are beneficial but not necessarily required.
"We're also enabling audio while driving experiences for video apps on cars with Google built-in," Google explained in a new developer video, spotted by 9to5Google.
First look at Google's new Android XR glasses with life-changing augmented reality
"You can now implement seamless transitions from parked video playback to audio-only listening while driving.
"Suppose you're streaming a live sports event while getting curbside pickup.
"Now, you can continue listening to the audio when you start to drive again."
As Google noted, sports fans will be able to stay up to date with the latest match updates, without taking their eyes off the road.
The new feature - alongside the incoming video video apps - are not yet available in Android Auto and are still in the works behind the scenes.

Skoda Enyaq Driving, Engines & Performance

Driving What is it like to drive? Don't worry about the Start button. Just hop in, put your foot on the brake pedal, pop it into D (or B) and you're away. And it takes precisely no getting used to: steering feel is AWOL but still nicely judged as far as weight and precision goes, while the pedals are both well calibrated for smooth driving. Despite the Enyaq being rear-wheel drive as standard, it's not a car you'll relish driving along a B-road. But for a family SUV, that's fine. All the Enyaq needs to do is get your brood from A to B without making them throw up, and it's stable and settled enough that car sickness shouldn't be a problem*. Advertisement - Page continues below The four-wheel-drive 85x doesn't offer any extra dynamic prowess, but you do get the smug sense of sure-footedness that comes with sturdy traction. Especially helpful with a torquey electric drivetrain, you're much less likely to go spearing off into the bushes. How refined is it? The Enyaq rides fine, though if you're coming from a petrol or diesel it's more jiggly than you might expect, especially over broken tarmac and potholes. An issue that many EVs suffer from, courtesy of their hefty batteries. As such smaller wheels are probably the way to go here (base spec models get 19s and upper specs 20s as standard) to soften the ride slightly. Dynamic Chassis Control is a fairly expensive option that's probably not worth bothering with here. Wind and road noise are well suppressed though, and the Enyaq feels planted at higher speeds on the motorway. It'll cruise at 70mph quite happily; you less so when you notice how quickly the range is plummeting. Advertisement - Page continues below Is it quick? Well, 0-62mph takes 6.7 seconds in the 282bhp 77kWh car (that's the 85 remember – confusing naming strategy, we know) whether you go two- or four-wheel drive, while the 201bhp 59kWh car (the 60) will do it in 8.1s. So both more than adequate. 0-30mph will feel pretty punchy if you've never driven an EV before. The vRS is a different kettle of fish. The raw numbers are 336bhp, 402lb ft, 0-62mph in 5.4s and a top speed of 112mph. All of which are up on the pre-facelift model. We haven't had a go in this latest one yet, but the old car's extra grunt quickly got boring and did little for us. Anything else I should know? Higher spec Enyaqs get paddles on the steering wheel to adjust the amount of brake regeneration, or you can stick the transmission in 'B' mode to lock it in its strongest setting. It's not the strongest regen we've ever experienced though, and not EV you can practically drive on the accelerator pedal alone. The Enyaq range is officially rated at up to 4.0 mi/kWh for the entry car, 4.1 mi/kWh for the sportier 85, and 3.9 mi/kWh for the dual motor 85x and vRS. New to this EV lingo? You're looking at mpg for electric cars – the higher the number, the more efficient it is. In the updated 85x we didn't see lower than 3.8 mi/kWh on our test run, though worth noting that was on a warm day in slow-moving traffic. So in the summer you're looking at 300+ miles of range easily, and even in the winter we can't imagine it falling much below 250. Away from the motorway we even bettered Skoda's claim of 3.9 mi/kWh on a couple of journeys. Though that took a hit when we, er, made full use of the accelerator pedal. As you'd expect. *TG accepts no responsibility if your child chunders in the back of an Enyaq. Sorry. Patrick Mahomes left in disbelief as Kansas City Royals call up top prospect Jac Caglianone

It took fewer than 80 minor-league games, but Kansas City Royals phenom Jac Caglianone is already getting called up to the majors - and nobody is happier than Patrick Mahomes. The Royals minority owner and Chiefs quarterback reacted to the news on X, where ESPN's Jeff Passan revealed the 22-year-old Caglianone (pronounced: CAG-lee-ohn) is headed from Triple-A Omaha to Kansas City. Rather than using his own words to convey his excitement, Mahomes instead relied on a meme of Steve Carell's Michael Scott character from the office. 'Oh, my God!' Scott says in the clip. 'Okay, it's happening.' There was some confusion among fans about Mahomes' reaction, given that he grew up in the Dallas area and has a father who once pitched for the Texas Rangers in addition to a number of other teams in the majors and Japan. 'You're a Rangers fan!' one person wrote on X. Others wondered why Mahomes, who obtained a minority stake of the Royals in 2021, learned of the news after Passan. 'Shouldn't you be like the 1st person to know… your (sic) a owner?' another asked. Mahomes is hardly alone in his anticipation of Caglianone's arrival, who could pay dividends for a surprisingly competitive Royals club in the American League Central. Kansas City currently sits at 21-29, which is eight games back of first-place Detroit, but right in the thick of the wildcard chase. Manager Matt Quatraro's pitchers rank fourth in the majors in earned-run average (3.13), but the offense is tied for 28th in runs scored. Enter Caglianone, a punishing left-handed hitter who could complement a lineup highlighted by righties Bobby Witt Jr., Jonathan India, Salvador Perez and Maikel Garcia. A pitcher and first baseman at Florida, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Caglianone has abandoned the mound in favor of the batter's box, where he's flourished since being picked sixth overall in last year's MLB Draft. Over just 79 minor-league games across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A, Caglianone hit .292 with an impressive .358 on-base percentage and a robust .517 slugging percentage thanks to 17 home runs and 18 doubles. He also comes from a baseball hotbed in Tampa, where he attended the same high school as Hall-of-Famer Wade Boggs and current New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso.
