Preston's Blake Jennings emerging as a leader for Knights as camp is underway
For others, simply being a good teammate and doing things the right way can reap benefits equal to those of being a statistical leader. By doing what they're called to do, helping others learn the ways of a program, and setting a positive example of what it means to be part of a team, some players find that success comes to them without having the ball in their hands.
That describes Preston High School's Blake Jennings, who has become one of the more vocal leaders on the team, leading by example, according to his head coach Mark Deep.
'Blake has worked incredibly hard all offseason, showing up for every 6 a.m. lift three times a week,' Deep said. 'Then he would return in the evening to help the younger guys with their work. He has shown an elevated work ethic this year and is developing into an outstanding team leader for us by the way he sets an example for the rest of his teammates.'
Deep says what stands out about Jennings is his willingness to put the team first and do whatever it takes to help the team win. Last season, Jennings played defensive end and center for the Knights because they needed someone to fill in for the role on the offensive line. He arrived in Kingwood as a quarterback but quickly changed his role for the benefit of the team. Deep even says he could play more roles this year, potentially lining up at linebacker.
'My dad has always told me there's no 'I' in team,' Jennings said. 'You can't be selfish and be a part of a team. In my freshman year, I came in as a quarterback and broke my leg, so I was willing to do anything I could to get back on the field. Coach approached me and mentioned we needed someone to play center, and I stepped up.'
The Knights will have their former center back in 2025, allowing Jennings to fill in elsewhere. As far as his preparation for the upcoming season, Blake says his focus was heavily on building the team chemistry and bond.
'I'm really just trying to get closer with my teammates in general,' he said. 'We worked out every single week this summer and didn't take a day off. We were always trying to do something. Whether it's getting out to the campground for the day or finding a field to work on the offense, our goal is to work hard together but also enjoy each other while we are around.'
One thing Jennings says he enjoys about being a Knight is representing not only his school, but the entire county of Preston.
'Putting on the jersey and going out there on Friday night is one of the best feelings ever,' he said. 'You're not just representing a school, or a town, or an area, you're representing the entire county and everyone who has ever been tied to Preston. Every time I put on the uniform, I think of all the players who came before me and the impact they made on the program. It's like one huge family to me, and I'm proud to be able to play a small role in it all.'

2025 UCF Football Predictions: Knights Ranked 74th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 UCF Football Predictions: Knights Ranked 74th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:57 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where UCF lands in my Ultimate 136. UCF Knights ranking: 74 Last year's ranking: 54 Top player: DE Nyjalik Kelly: Spent two years at Miami before transferring to UCF last season; recorded 5.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in his first year with the Knights. [UCF's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: The last time Scott Frost was the head coach at UCF, he led the Golden Knights to an undefeated season and a claim to the 2017 national championship. It took him just two years to create a 13-0 team. After five bad years at Nebraska and a short stint with the Los Angeles Rams, Frost has his work cut out for him in his return to UCF, when the entire sport has changed since he last coached it. ADVERTISEMENT The team he takes over won just two games in conference play and finished tied for 13th. The four wins it had are its fewest since 2013. Frost has his work cut out for him in Orlando. And he's begun the makeover with 68 new players joining his program this season. If UCF can win its first three games — including a Sept. 20 showdown with Bill Belichick's UNC squad — that will put the program in position to finish the season with a bowl invitation. Cardinals 20, Chiefs 17: What we saw from Arizona on offense
We look at what we saw from the offense against the Chiefs. The Arizona Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday night in their preseason opener 20-17. The starters played a little more than a quarter, but it was the backups who rallied back from a 14-3 deficit to win. As a team, they had 355 yards of offense, 24 first downs and converted 4-of-9 third downs. What can we take away from the offensive performance? Cardinals 20, Chiefs 17: Takeaways on offense The Cardinals rushed for 140 yards on the evening, which should be expected. Of the 140 yards, 51 came late from Zonovan "Bam" Knight in the final quarter as the Cardinals ran the clock out. The Cardinals expect to have a strong rushing attack shared between James Conner and Trey Benson. When quarterback Kyler Murray was in the game, the offense ran smoothly. He had only one incompletion. He completed passes to five different receivers. However, as sometimes the problem was last season, they didn't turn either of their two drives into touchdowns. Murray threw an interception and then they had to kick a field goal after Benson could not pick up a third-and-one run play. Brissett and the second-team offense went three-and-out on their first drive, and he was hit twice in three plays. But he led the Cardinals to two touchdowns, giving them the lead. He was exactly what fans expect — steady and efficient. He even used his legs once to set up the second touchdown. While Brissett was hit twice in the first possession he played, the pass protection was good. The Chiefs finished with only one sack and three quarterback hits, meaning the sack Clayton Tune took and the two hits Brissett took in thet three-and-out were the only ones of the game. Kyle Shanahan weighs in on whether top WR's absence is due to injury or contract
San Francisco fans would like standout wide receiver Jauan Jennings back as soon as possible. Jennings led all 49ers wide receivers in receiving yardage last season with 975 yards on 77 catches with six touchdown grabs. But, the 28-year-old has been sidelined throughout 49ers OTAs and training camp with an ongoing calf injury. As he enters the final year of his current deal, Jennings has reportedly requested a new contract from the 49ers this offseason. That led reporters to ask 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan if Jennings' absence throughout training camp has been because of his lingering calf injury or if there's been any indication that the absence has been related to business. "No, not at all. And this is actually why Jauan missed OTAs is because of his calf. It's the same injury he had last year during training camp, which made him miss a couple weeks during training camp last year. "We didn't get him until the end of training camp last year and it's the same thing on the MRI and it's the same thing he's going through. But, hopefully we'll get him back sooner than later," Shanahan said. 49ers general manager John Lynch said this past week that there's still no timetable on a return for fellow receiver Brandon Aiyuk. But, Lynch did say that he doesn't expect Aiyuk back for Week 1 of the 2025 season. 'There's just steps you have to continue to hit, and I'll continue to say that Brandon is doing well in his rehab,' Lynch said. 'Do we have an exact date right now? No. I don't think it will be Week 1, but hopefully, I'm surprised. We'll see. 'Continuing to try to watch him work his way through this rehab. But again, we want him fully healthy. He had a significant injury, and so, you have to do a significant rehab, and he's doing a really good job of that, and we've got to continue to do so.' Aiyuk's situation only adds to the importance of getting Jennings back as quickly as possible. More 49ers: Notes from 49ers dreadful preseason showing against the Broncos
