Leagues Cup roundup: CF Toluca rally to beat '24 champion Crew

Reuters3 days ago
July 30 - Paulinho scored twice late in regulation, then Luis Manuel Garcia pulled off some penalty-saving heroics as visiting CF Toluca triumphed on penalties after rallying to a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew on Tuesday night in both teams' Leagues Cup opener.
Paulinho's goals came in the 71st and 80th minutes to pull the reigning Liga MX Clausura champions level.
From there, Garcia saved three penalties -- first denying Diego Rossi his second goal from the spot in the 88th minute, then thwarting Rossi again as well as Amar Sejdic during the shootout.
That was enough to help the Diablos Rojos earn the extra point in the standings, completing their shootout win when Helinho converted to make it 4-2 on the Mexican side's fifth kick.
Rossi's 11th-minute penalty opened the scoring for the Crew, the defending Leagues Cup champions. Max Arfsten doubled Columbus' lead just after halftime on a composed finish after receiving Jacen Russell-Rowe's feed.
Puebla 3, New York City FC 0
Emiliano Gomez had a goal and an assist as visiting Puebla eased to a deceptively lopsided victory over New York City FC in Harrison, N.J.
Juan Fedorco opened the scoring in the second minute as NYCFC failed to clear the danger from a corner kick.
Gomez doubled the lead when he reached Alejandro Organista's low cross in the 38th minute, and Owen Gonzalez finished off an excellent team goal in the 88th minute after Gomez's final pass.
Jesus Rodriguez made five saves to keep the tournament's first clean sheet, on a night NYCFC narrowly led Puebla 17-13 in total shots. Matthew Freese made two saves for NYCFC.
CF Montreal 1 (7), Club Leon 1 (6)
Prince Owusu scored his 10th goal in 10 matches across all competitions, and Montreal prevailed on penalties against visiting Club Leon following their draw.
Owusu leveled the match in the 62nd minute following a wonderful setup from Dante Sealy, canceling out Rogelio Funes Mori's 11th-minute header from James Rodriguez's long, early diagonal ball.
From there, 13 consecutive penalty takers converted in the shootout before Leon's Sebastian Santos struck the crossbar with his effort, handing Montreal the extra point in the standings.
Oscar Jimenez made six saves to keep Club Leon in it on a night they were outshot 17-4 overall and 7-2 in efforts on target.

Former Man Utd star reveals he was subject of infamous Roy Keane story: 'That kid was me'

Roy Keane had run-ins with a number of Manchester United colleagues during his time at Old Trafford and one of those players has spoken about one particular incident Former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi has opened up on a story from Roy Keane's autobiography, revealing he was the mystery player the Irishman spoke about. As Keane told it, Rossi narrowly avoided a slap after glaring at United's captain. ‌ Rossi was just 18 when Keane left United, so will have still been in his teens when the incident took place. And the Italian international, who retired in 2023, has opened up on the incident. ‌ 'Keane wrote that one time in training he had told off a young Italian player for not passing him the ball and this young lad replied with a strong glare, a challenge," Rossi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "If that kid had said something, he would've got a slap, but he was silent and his gaze spoke volumes. So he walked over to shake his hand. ‌ 'Well, that kid was me. And I don't remember it at all! Evidently I was in a trance and my determination to create a career was absolute.' Rossi had a nomadic career after leaving Old Trafford, playing in Italy, Spain and the United States. The American-born star, who won 30 caps for Italy, also reflected on working under Sir Alex Ferguson during his time in English football. 'He was a surprise, because he was an austere person, but also affectionate and attentive, a paternal figure who knew how to treat young players like gems," Rossi said. "He would protect and motivate them to help them grow as both people and players, with precise values and rules. 'In training, it was like another sport to what I was accustomed to, this brutal pace and intensity. There were no friends in training, lots of shoves, kicks, aggression. I quickly realised what I had to do to earn respect in that squad. I was physically behind the rest, so I had to make do with technique and intelligence.' Rossi wasn't the only United newcomer to fall afoul of Keane towards the end of the captain's time in Manchester. Gabriel Heinze joined in the same summer as Rossi, back in 2004, and claimed to have been sparked out by Keane early in his spell with the club. ‌ "The first thing you hear in English or in another language are bad words," Heinze, who recently joined Arsenal's coaching staff, said in 2022. "He (Keane) was looking at me and he says to me: "F*** off!" And I knew that was a dirty word. "I stood up and the guy comes over to me. C'mon, I was only a kid. So I repeated it back to him, I said "f*** off you!. Then I don't remember anything else..." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Referee helped off pitch by doctors and grimaces in pain after suffering injury in MLS competition

AN American referee was forced off the pitch injured during a Leagues Cup match on Thursday night. Official Lukasz Szpala hopped his way off the playing surface and was replaced by the fourth official after suffering an injury during New York Red Bulls ' victory over Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara. 5 5 5 Szpala fell to the ground after just seven minutes having seemingly slipped over. But after medical treatment and a brief delay in the match the referee was deemed unable to continue due to an ankle injury. Fourth official Guido Gonzales Jr. was on hand to step in and take over instead. Szpala appeared to be in serious discomfort as he grimaced and covered his face while on the floor. He was also unable to walk off the pitch and needed to be supported by medical staff while hopping off the playing surface. The game itself was full of drama as the Leagues Cup, a competition between MLS clubs and Liga MX clubs, drummed up even more entertainment. New York Red Bulls managed to snatch an unlikely win from Chivas at the death when substitute Emil Forsberg scored a spectacular free-kick in the SEVENTH minute of injury time. The former RB Leipzig man drilled his effort low and hard into the bottom corner, giving Chivas stopper Raul Rangel no chance of keeping it out. 5 The unusual competition format means that even if Forsberg hadn't hit home that late winner, there still wouldn't have been a draw. Leagues Cup rules dictate that any match that ends in a draw during the group stage will result in both teams getting one point, before a penalty shootout decides an eventual winner who then gets a second point.

Leagues Cup roundup: Red Bulls top Guadalajara in last seconds

August 1 - Emil Forsberg's free-kick goal in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time carried the New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 win over Guadalajara in an opening group-stage match of the Leagues Cup on Thursday in Harrison, N.J. From 20 yards slightly left of center, Forsberg fired his shot through the Guadalajara wall and into the bottom right corner of the net. Red Bulls goalkeeper Anthony Marcucci finished with four saves for the shutout win. Guadalajara goalie Raul Rangel stopped three shots. FC Cincinnati 3, Monterrey 2 Luca Orellano scored the tie-breaking goal in the 53rd minute, and host FC Cincinnati survived a late exchange of goals to defeat Monterrey. The score was tied 1-1 before Orellano played a nice 1-2 combination with Evander, whose pass slipped Orellano in for a one-on-one against goalie Luis Cardenas. Orellano rounded Cardenas and tapped in the ball. Pavel Bucha doubled Cincinnati's lead in the 90th minute, which proved vital when Monterrey's German Berterame sliced the deficit four minutes later. Evander scored a 31st-minute goal that was offset by a tally from Sergio Canales just before halftime. FC Juarez 4, Charlotte FC 1 Madson scored two first-half goals, and visiting FC Juarez pulled away for a victory over Charlotte FC. In the seventh minute, Jose Luis Rodriguez sent a cross from the left flank to the far post, where Madson headed it in. Idan Toklomati tied the contest in the 18th minute, but Madson replied again three minutes later. Madson dribbled into the box on the right side, faked to his left and then beat Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina at the near post. Moises Mosquera increased the visitors' lead to 3-1 just before halftime, and after Toklomati received a red card in the 80th minute, Oscar Estupinan added a tally near the end. --Field Level Media
