Former Man Utd star reveals he was subject of infamous Roy Keane story: 'That kid was me'
Former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi has opened up on a story from Roy Keane's autobiography, revealing he was the mystery player the Irishman spoke about. As Keane told it, Rossi narrowly avoided a slap after glaring at United's captain.
Rossi was just 18 when Keane left United, so will have still been in his teens when the incident took place. And the Italian international, who retired in 2023, has opened up on the incident.
'Keane wrote that one time in training he had told off a young Italian player for not passing him the ball and this young lad replied with a strong glare, a challenge," Rossi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "If that kid had said something, he would've got a slap, but he was silent and his gaze spoke volumes. So he walked over to shake his hand.
'Well, that kid was me. And I don't remember it at all! Evidently I was in a trance and my determination to create a career was absolute.'
Rossi had a nomadic career after leaving Old Trafford, playing in Italy, Spain and the United States. The American-born star, who won 30 caps for Italy, also reflected on working under Sir Alex Ferguson during his time in English football.
'He was a surprise, because he was an austere person, but also affectionate and attentive, a paternal figure who knew how to treat young players like gems," Rossi said. "He would protect and motivate them to help them grow as both people and players, with precise values and rules.
'In training, it was like another sport to what I was accustomed to, this brutal pace and intensity. There were no friends in training, lots of shoves, kicks, aggression. I quickly realised what I had to do to earn respect in that squad. I was physically behind the rest, so I had to make do with technique and intelligence.'
Rossi wasn't the only United newcomer to fall afoul of Keane towards the end of the captain's time in Manchester. Gabriel Heinze joined in the same summer as Rossi, back in 2004, and claimed to have been sparked out by Keane early in his spell with the club.
"The first thing you hear in English or in another language are bad words," Heinze, who recently joined Arsenal's coaching staff, said in 2022. "He (Keane) was looking at me and he says to me: "F*** off!" And I knew that was a dirty word.
"I stood up and the guy comes over to me. C'mon, I was only a kid. So I repeated it back to him, I said "f*** off you!. Then I don't remember anything else..."

Wayne Rooney's son Kai bumped up three age levels as he is named in Man United squad for international tournament featuring PSG
Wayne Rooney 's son Kai has taken a major step in his budding football career after earning a shock call-up to Manchester United 's Under-19 squad for the prestigious Mladen Ramljak Tournament in Croatia – despite being just 15 years old. The teenager, who can play either as a No 9 or out wide, has been promoted three age groups following his standout performances at the Super Cup NI in Northern Ireland last week. Kai scored and assisted as United's Under-16s reached the final, losing narrowly to Southampton. Now, barely into his summer holidays, Kai is lining up against players up to four years older than him at one of Europe's top youth tournaments. The Mladen Ramljak Memorial, hosted in Zagreb by Croatian giants Dinamo, has become a magnet for scouts and elite academy sides – with previous editions featuring the likes of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic and Eduardo Camavinga. United have been drawn into Group A alongside Rapid Bucuresti, Juventus and Dinamo Zagreb – the defending champions. Kai and his young teammates kick off their campaign on Thursday against Rapid. The tournament concludes on Sunday with placement matches and a final between the group winners. Group B comprises Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk – all of whom are represented by their top youth squads. The Red Devils' decision to fast-track Kai into the squad is being seen as a vote of confidence in his long-term potential. United are also understood to have included a handful of other younger players from their U15 and U16 ranks. That includes 14-year-old striker JJ Gabriel, the Nike-signed prodigy dubbed 'Kid Messi ', who scored twice on his Under-18 debut against Leeds earlier this year. Kai's call-up comes off the back of a strong showing in the Super Cup NI. The tournament – formerly known as the Milk Cup – holds special significance for the Rooneys, with Wayne having played in it himself for Everton back in 2000. Wayne and wife Coleen were ever-present throughout the tournament, cheering from the stands alongside their younger sons Kit and Cass. They also took time out to enjoy the local attractions – including a visit to Curry's Fun Park in Portrush, where Wayne and his sons were spotted on the bumper cars. The couple posed for photos with staff and mingled with onlookers, drawing praise for their down-to-earth demeanour. After the final, Wayne posted a proud message on social media: 'Great few days in Coleraine for the SuperCupNI. Well done to Kai and the Manchester United lads on a brilliant effort throughout the tournament. Congratulations to Southampton on the win. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.' When asked about offering advice to his eldest son, Wayne said he prefers a hands-off approach. 'He just plays, that's what he's always done. It's unfair to expect too much — he's only 15. But he handles the pressure of his surname very well.' Kai joined United's academy in 2020 at the age of 11 and has steadily worked his way through the youth ranks. His playing style draws natural comparisons to his father, while staff at United have praised his composure, movement off the ball, and eye for goal.

Man Utd make contact with Brighton over deal to sign £100m star
Manchester United have approached Brighton over a potential transfer deal to sign their £100m midfielder Carlos Baleba, according to reports. United have 'made contact' with Brighton via intermediaries to explore the conditions of a summer move, The Athletic's David Ornstein has reported. Posting the story on X, Ornstein credited Indykaila, with that transfer insider claiming Brighton want £90m plus 10m in add-ons to sell Baleba. Man Utd, though, value Baleba at £70m and it's thought the player will ask Brighton to reduce their asking price to secure a switch to Old Trafford. The Athletic have stated that 'all sides' have recognised that a move may be 'unrealistic' at this moment in time – especially if the Red Devils sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig as expected. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. It's believed United would need to sell a number of players before making a formal offer for Baleba. Offloading Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho – for example – is reported to be enough for United to make a bid. United are keen to recruit a new No.6 ahead of the new Premier League season – and have made Baleba one of their main targets. Brighton have no desire to sell the 21-year-old midfielder, who is under contract at the Amex until 2028 with an option to extend by 12 months. The Cameroon international joined the Seagulls in 2023 from Lille and has made 77 appearances for the south coast club to date. There's set to be updates in the 'coming days' if United's interest in Baleba will develop or not. Baleba was named Brighton's Young Player of the Season last term after a number of impressive performances. He scored three Premier League goals in the 2024-25 campaign against Chelsea, Fulham and West Ham respectively. United supporters have been reacting to the news of the club's approach for Baleba on social media. More Trending 'If we get Baleba and [Senne] Lammens on top of [Matheus] Cunha, [Bryan] Mbeumo and Sesko, this will have been a serious, serious summer window,' @123cwahoo posted on Reddit. 'Easily the best window we've had post-Glazers,' @Immersivist added. 'And I mean a window where we're actually buying players with an idea of where they fit in.' 'My head tells me that this is going to be prohibitively expensive for us to do this summer, and we may just be doing the legwork right now to then come back next year for him,' @arnm7890 opined. 'I'd think the idea of getting Baleba is so we can use Bruno [Fernandes] alongside him,' @s_D088z said. 'And then we look like a very potent threat to anyone in terms of attacking football.' Son Heung-min admits Los Angeles FC move was not his first choice
The 33-year-old on Wednesday completed a move worth in excess of £20million – the highest transfer fee paid by an MLS club – after it was revealed on Saturday he would be leaving Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances and months after he captained the club to Europa League glory. At an introductory press conference in Los Angeles, the South Korea international admitted he had to be persuaded of the merits of moving to the United States before signing an initial two-year deal. New Beginnings ☀️ Welcome to Los Angeles, Sonny! — LAFC (@LAFC) August 6, 2025 'They've been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,' Son said. 'If I'm honest it was not my first choice but John (Thorrington, LAFC general manager) was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind, he changed my heart. 'I'm so happy to see all the Korean fans, I was at the game and I saw you supporting like crazy and I wanted to run on the pitch and show my performance. I'm here to win and I will perform. 'I will definitely show you something exciting in… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show you some exciting football and we will have success.' Son added that the decision to leave Spurs had left him feeling 'very empty'. 'I felt like I gave it all, but I felt like I needed a new chapter and new challenge and I chose LAFC. I'm old but I still have good physicality, good legs and I still have good quality.' Earlier Son had issued an heartfelt message to Tottenham fans on making the 'hardest decision ever' to leave north London. 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go,' Son wrote. 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. Dear Spurs fans… Sonny's letter to you 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 6, 2025 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. With pride and honour.' Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. Son's performance helped turn Tottenham into title contenders when they finished second in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino in 2017, finishing as runners-up in the Champions League two years later. After Kane left for Bayern Munich, Son became Spurs captain under Ange Postecoglou, lifting the Europa League trophy in May – having come off the bench in the final against Manchester United, a 1-0 Spurs win, after an injury-affected campaign. The popular South Korean will renew acquaintances with Hugo Lloris and move to Los Angeles, which boasts one of the largest Korean populations in the world, ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States.
