Peppa Pig's new baby sister: could Evie Pig become a billion dollar brand?

The Guardian21-05-2025
Name: Evie.
Age: Brand new.
Appearance: Tiny, porcine.
That's not very nice. It's OK, Evie is a Pig.
A Pig with a capital P? Pig is her surname – Evie is Peppa Pig's sister.
Peppa Pig has a sister? She does now. Evie was born at 5.34am on Monday.
That's a bit specific. Any idea where? Daddy and Mummy Pig welcomed Evie into the world at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's hospital in London, where the Duchess of Cambridge, now the Princess of Wales, had her children.
This is the cartoon Peppa Pig, right? And not some weird family who have changed their name by deed poll? That's right. A town crier made the announcement outside the hospital.
I didn't realise the Pigs lived in London. Don't be silly, they live in Peppatown.
And why Evie? She was named after an aunt of Mummy Pig's, after a period of agonising indecision. 'We've got SO many ideas for names. Too many, frankly!' Mummy Pig told Grazia last month.
Sorry, did you say Grazia? Yes, don't you follow celebrity news, or are you too high-minded for that sort of thing?
It's just that I had no idea Mummy Pig was even pregnant. That was first announced in February, although it wasn't revealed on the show until 30 March, Mother's Day in the UK.
How is Peppa taking the news? Peppa and her brother, George, are said to be 'thrilled', but we'll see how long that lasts.
Remind me how old Peppa is again? Peppa is four, but the show has been on the air for 21 years, so you could say 21, or possibly 25.
I don't know how to react to that. Just rejoice in the happy news like everyone else.
Everyone else? Congratulations have been rolling in from nursery brands, Boots and others since the announcement was made live on Good Morning Britain.
People are certainly making a big deal out of this. That's hardly surprising, given that Peppa Pig is broadcast in more than 180 territories worldwide, in more than 40 languages. The official YouTube channel has almost 40 million subscribers. A new character presents, if nothing else, a huge marketing opportunity.
Who owns Peppa Pig? In 2019, the company that owned the franchise was acquired by Hasbro for £3.3bn.
That's a lot of money. Peppa makes a lot of money. In addition to programmes, books and merchandise, there are theme parks all over the world, including Peppa Pig World in Hampshire.
Ah, yes. Boris Johnson's favourite place, according to a confused and rambling speech he made to the Confederation of British Industry in 2021. I'll bet he hasn't been back.
Do say: 'Welcome, little Evie.'
Don't say: 'I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down!'

Cocaine shame of the school-gate mums: I thought I was unshockable says ANNA MELTON... then I watched them pull out their 'treats' in the most immoral place imaginable

My five-year-old son Jack* had only been at primary school for a few weeks when we were invited to a birthday party for one of his classmates. Though I barely knew the birthday boy's mum – a glamorous fashion buyer who I'll call Cleo – she was warm and welcoming when we arrived at their beautiful double-fronted property in south London, spread out over four floors.

Vogue Williams reveals she's quit alcohol after teetotal husband Spencer Matthews told her to 'lay off' - months after boozy blackout at star-studded wedding

Vogue Williams has revealed she's quit alcohol after her husband Spencer Matthews suggested she 'lay off the booze' following bouts of binge drinking. The TV presenter, 39, shares three children with the former Made in Chelsea star, who recently stopped his occasional drinking to return to total sobriety. Vogue has previously described herself as a 'binge drinker' because 'I don't really like the taste of alcohol, so if you see me drinking alcohol, I'm drinking it for one reason... to get drunk.' Now, Vogue has revealed that she decided to take a three-month break from booze after Spencer, 37, suggested she should. 'Spencer was drinking, like, little bits and bobs... and then he went tee-total again,' Vogue explained. 'And as soon as he decided he wasn't drinking again, he turned around to me and he was like, "Would you not consider it now - with your drinking?"' Speaking this week on her podcast, Never Live It Down, Vogue elaborated: 'When I say I drink f*** all - like, I rarely drink. I don't even like the taste of it and he's telling me that I need to lay off the booze. I was like, Spenny, I barely drink - it's only because you're not drinking.' However, the Irish star, who married former party boy Spencer in 2018, has ultimately opted for a three-month break from alcohol - admitting that her friends were less than enthusiastic. 'I'm taking like three months off booze and there was no support at all. I told all my friends - they're like, "Urgh, don't tell us! At least don't tell us". 'I just kind of feel like it. I don't want to be hungover. Three seems like a good number and I'm always saying I'm not going to [drink]. 'I think nothing good happens after midnight… all those nights you stayed up talking s***? Such a waste of time.' The decision comes just three months after Vogue made headlines for admitting she got so drunk at YouTuber Jack Maynard's lavish French wedding to £440 million heiress Lily Mackie that she blacked out. Attending the May nuptials at the five-star Chateau Saint-Martin & Spa in Vence with Spencer and their two eldest children, Theo, five, and Gigi, three, Vogue confessed she 'didn't remember getting into the hotel room' after an enthusiastic session at the reception's margarita bar. 'It was the nicest wedding I've ever seen in my entire life,' she said at the time. 'I got excited because there was a margarita bar… and the next day, I woke up and I remembered the last bit of the night but I definitely didn't remember getting into the hotel room.' The couple's youngest child, Otto, two, stayed at home for the trip, while the Matthews family joined a guest list that included influencers Caspar Lee and Josh Pieters, singer Conor Maynard and his siblings, as well as members of the Middleton family. Jack's wife Lily is the niece of Pippa Middleton's husband, James Matthews, Spencer's older brother. While Vogue laughed off her overindulgence at the time, waking up next to her sober husband sparked a pang of embarrassment. 'I was looking at Spen and I was like [makes despairing noise] - you know when you're quite nervous,' she recalled. 'And as I went up to the wedding party, lots of people went, "How's the head?" and I was like, oh no…' The model-turned-broadcaster has often contrasted her casual drinking habits with Spencer's more public journey to sobriety. Once known for his wild partying on Made in Chelsea, Spencer quit drinking in 2018 after admitting alcohol had become a 'problem' in his life. He went on to launch CleanCo, a low- and no-alcohol drinks brand, and has frequently spoken about the benefits of staying sober. Although Spencer has previously admitted he has the occasional drink, Vogue says his return to full abstinence came with a push for her to follow suit - which she has now agreed to do.

Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether. They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers. There are several reasons why this could be done. For example, government regulation, like the "sugar tax," forces firms to change their recipes. Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs. They may opt for a cheaper alternative, especially when costs are rising to keep prices stable. For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018. It has recently returned after six years away but as a sugar-free version. Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year. Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks. While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose.
