Time to raise bets on Malaysia semiconductor stocks on expected ‘market-friendly' trade deal: UOBKH

Business Times2 days ago
[SINGAPORE] Malaysian stocks could score near-term wins as the US' 'softening stance' on tariffs is expected to bring about market-friendly trade deals between the two countries, said UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH).
In a Wednesday (Jul 2) report, the brokerage said it was time to raise bets on Malaysia with the expectations of favourable trade deals with the US.
'In anticipation of market-friendly US trade deals being struck and Malaysia retaining its onshoring destination status, our July 2025 picks raise the bet on semiconductor-related stocks, while still maintaining our emphasis on domestic infrastructure plays,' said UOB analysts.
Maybank on Jul 1 also predicted that Malaysia could shine in the next phase of global trade, with US tariffs on the country likely to stay at a lower band relative to other nations.
UOB's top picks for July 2025 included engineering solutions provider Coraza, pharmaceutical company Duopharma Biotech, property player Eco World Development, Gamuda, Hume Cement Industries, semiconductor services provider IJM and digital services provider MY EG Services – all of which were assigned a 'buy' rating.
Semiconductor-related stocks to succeed in short-run
A 'softening stance' on the US' tariff demands should culminate in market-friendly US-Malaysia trade deals, UOBKH analysts said.

'This expectation, together with strong anecdotal evidence of Malaysian electrical and electronics companies significantly clinching orders and order enquiries since the US' 90-day tariff pause in April, should trigger further near-term upside especially for semiconductor-related stocks,' UOBKH analysts said.
These semiconductor-related players should get near-term wins before potential profit taking and ahead of forex-related challenges in the upcoming quarterly results season in June and July, they added.
One new addition to the brokerage's list of top picks, semiconductor-related laggard Coraza, logged consistent year-on-year revenue improvements across the past four quarters, said UOBKH analyst Desmond Chong.
He highlighted the company's 'solid' order momentum, as its current outstanding orderbook is at RM80 million (S$24.1 million) – 10 per cent above the previous quarter's quantum, with the bulk of orders coming from the semiconductor industry.
The company is investing in higher and more sophisticated equipment to cater to the needs of its customers, Chong said. Upgrades for a newly acquired plant opposite its existing Nibong Tebal plant are on track, while another new factory adjacent to the plant is set to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The timeline given for Coraza was six to nine months with a target price of RM0.66.
Inari, a company involved in semiconductor assembly, is another new addition to UOBKH's top picks.
The brokerage lifted its target price upwards to RM2.36 from RM1.90, and assigned it a six to nine-month timeline.
While the group's share price dropped 34 per cent in the year to date, Chong noted that its radio frequency segment sustained a 'relatively healthy' utilisation rate of 65 to 70 per cent.
Inari is poised to commercialise on new product pipelines in upcoming quarters, with its 2025 growth to be driven largely by its flagship radio frequency business.
The group has also made recent forays into advanced packaging platforms such as flip-chip chip-scale packages and flip-chip ball grid arrays, Chong said.
'These technologies offer ultra-high performance, high memory bandwidth, and heterogeneous integration capabilities to cater to the increasing demand for cutting-edge semiconductor solutions in artificial intelligence, server, networking, smart devices and industrial applications,' he added.

Bluebird's answer to Grab and Gojek? Not discounts

[JAKARTA] Bluebird, one of Indonesia's oldest taxi companies, has been around for 53 years. Today, it faces competition from tech giants like Grab and Gojek as well as emerging players like Vietnam's Xanh SM, an electric vehicle startup that operates as Green SM in Indonesia. But rather than racing to match these newer competitors on price or scale, Bluebird is sticking to delivering consistent and reliable service. 'We're not targeting every segment and we're not [entirely] premium either,' says Andre Djokosoetono, CEO of Bluebird Group, in an interview with Tech in Asia during the Asia Economic Summit in Jakarta. 'We serve the non-price-sensitive market.' Judging by Bluebird's financials, the strategy works. The company has consistently been profitable since its November 2014 IPO, aside from Covid-era blips. In 2024, it earned 592.7 billion rupiah (S$46.6 million) in net profit out of 5 trillion rupiah in net revenue. Against price wars Bluebird sees its segment as more focused on customers who prioritise consistency and service over cost. A NEWSLETTER FOR YOU Friday, 8.30 am Asean Business Business insights centering on South-east Asia's fast-growing economies. Sign Up Sign Up As players like Xanh SM enter the market with fully electric fleets and aggressive promotions, Bluebird is deliberately steering clear of competing on price. Djokosoetono says the company has 'never been tempted to do price wars.' 'You can't lower your prices and deliver a consistent quality,' he points out. Amid competition from Gojek and Grab, Xanh SM has made aggressive moves. In December 2024, the Vietnamese company revealed its plan to operate 10,000 vehicles in Indonesia by the end of 2025. In comparison, Bluebird had a fleet of 24,500 taxis as of April this year. 'We are delivering the service with certain standards of quality that require a lot of infrastructure,' says Djokosoetono, adding that the company also has to train its drivers to meet those standards. To be clear, Grab and Gojek are much bigger companies in terms of size. Grab, for instance, earned US$643 million in Indonesia revenue in FY 2024 – more than twice Bluebird's, though that amount also includes other verticals like food delivery and financial services. But matching Grab and Gojek's scale may mean compromising quality, and in turn, hurt the Bluebird brand. Plus, despite the competition, Bluebird has chosen to partner its VC-backed rivals. Its fleet is available on both Gojek and Grab – the former even acquired a 4.33 per cent stake in Bluebird back in 2020. That doesn't mean Bluebird has not had to evolve to stay competitive with Grab and Gojek. In 2015, the company rolled out the MyBluebird app, which saw more than 40 per cent year-on-year growth in usage in the first quarter of 2025. Djokosoetono reveals that the app has already been downloaded more than 1.5 million times this year. Andre Djokosoetono, CEO of Bluebird Group PHOTO: Andre's LinkedIn That digital growth is mirrored in its financials. In 2024, Bluebird reported a 14 per cent increase in revenue and a 28 per cent growth in net profit, with a margin of around 12 per cent. It aims to exceed those figures this year and is on track to do so, with Q1 revenue up 16 per cent year on year, the CEO says. Bluebird's offline services – like street-hailing – also offer it some measure of differentiation with Grab and Gojek. Customers can still book a ride through the company's call centre, with Djokosoetono pointing out that even new users avail of this option. The company says it's 'agnostic' about how rides are booked or paid for. From EVs to AI Bluebird started experimenting with EVs as early as 2019, long before most of the industry paid attention. Today, it has about 500 electric vehicles on the road. That number could grow to 1,000 by year-end, depending on whether vehicle supply and pricing align with its service standards. Bluebird is also quietly working on an autonomous driving project, though it acknowledges that Indonesia is still far from ready for mass adoption. Notably, the company believes that road conditions, not regulation, are the bigger barrier to autonomous vehicles in the country. In the meantime, Bluebird is investing in AI to improve how its fleet operates. The company uses AI to predict demand and move vehicles to passenger hotspots in advance, sometimes 15 to 30 minutes ahead. It's also using algorithms to detect and address inconsistent driving behaviour. This is important because poor driver attitude is now easily amplified online and poses greater reputational risk in the long term. In addition, Bluebird has experienced a shift in customer transactions. More than half of payments are now made through cashless methods, whether through the app, QR code scanning, or partner platforms. But the company isn't dropping cash payments anytime soon, with Djokosoetono pointing out that 'some customers still want to pay in cash.' Bluebird is open to mergers and acquisitions. It acquired intercity shuttle bus operator Cititrans in 2019, which has expanded to 10 cities in Java. Djokosoetono says another deal is in the works, though he declined to share details. 'Organic and inorganic growth are always options for us,' says the CEO. 'If we can accelerate with inorganic options, we will do it as well.' TECH IN ASIA

Malaysia PM Anwar calls for increase in intra-BRICS trade, urges trading opportunities overseas

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia PM Anwar has called on BRICS to boost intra-trade and for the grouping to emerge as a strong and principled force amid unilateral tariff measures and protectionist policies. At the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit in Rio De Janeiro, which runs from Sunday (Jul 6) to Monday, Anwar also said that Malaysian companies must be willing to explore new markets and trading opportunities overseas. Anwar expressed confidence that BRICS, which today accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the global economy, holds vast potential to boost trade within the informal grouping. 'With that collective strength, we can engage the world safely, fairly, and justly, negotiating on equal terms with all partners in the multilateral system,' he said, as quoted by Malaysian news agency Bernama. He also emphasised the need for reform of key international institutions. 'We must demand the transformation of global governance structures, from the United Nations to the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank towards a more democratic and just multilateral order,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the BRICS Business Forum entitled: 'Bridging Continents, Building Future: A Shared Agenda for Sustainable Progress' on Sunday. Also present were President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President of Brazil Geraldo Alckmin and President of the Brazilian Confederation of National Industry Ricardo Alban. Anwar voiced his support for Lula, praising his courage as one of the few global leaders to speak on behalf of those who have been left unheard. The Malaysian premier, who is also finance minister, said BRICS and ASEAN members must continue to strengthen strategic cooperation, including enhancing cross-regional trade and investment for the shared benefit of developing countries. He added that Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair, shares BRICS' ideals of participation from the private sector, women, youth, and civil society. Also at the summit, Anwar warned that Malaysian companies must not solely rely on traditional markets, but instead venture into new ones. He said platforms like the BRICS offer enormous opportunities, and praised Malaysian companies Petronas and Yinson Production for their successful ventures in Brazil. Yinson, an independent owner and operator of floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, has three projects in Brazil since 2023, namely FPSO Anna Nery, FPSO Maria Quiteria and FPSO Atlanta. The company hosted a dinner at the BRICS Summit, where its executive chairman Lim Han Weng, was present. Petronas has ventured into oil production in Brazil and last year opened its petrol station as well. Anwar also said he has asked Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who was also present at the summit, to facilitate and offer assistance to Malaysian companies doing business in Brazil. In a meeting with Lula at the summit, Anwar said they discussed various issues of importance between the two countries. Anwar said Lula has accepted his invitation to visit Malaysia during the ASEAN Summit in October. "He wants to bring key ministers and business groups to Malaysia," Anwar said, as quoted by Bernama. He added there would be a special conference with both leaders addressing the event. Malaysia participated in the BRICS Leaders' Summit as a partner country and as ASEAN Chair 2025. It officially became a BRICS partner country on Jan 1. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil increased by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion (US$4.38 billion) in 2024, rising from RM17.43 billion recorded in 2023. Brazil is one of Malaysia's main trading partners in Latin America. The BRICS group - which serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South with collaboration across diverse sectors - was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China. It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa by 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia.

SpaceX staff to get lavish park in Musk's latest Texas land buy

[CHICAGO] Elon Musk's SpaceX is planning to develop a sprawling private recreation complex on land adjacent to his Texas Starlink factory, the latest sign of the billionaire's efforts to expand his corporate footprint across the state. The 'Project Echo' plan would develop basketball and pickleball courts, picnic areas and potentially a floating deck for kayaks across several acres, according to documents seen by Bloomberg. Use of the complex would be limited to employees, according to the documents, obtained through public-records disclosure laws. SpaceX will spend millions of US dollars on the development, a source familiar with the matter said. Project Echo would abut a factory in Bastrop, Texas, where SpaceX produces about 15,000 terminals and component parts daily for its Starlink satellite Internet unit. Musk's broader expansion includes recreation sites, real estate and even incorporating his own city initiatives that have spawned a number of environmental and land-use fights. The plans mirror Musk's efforts to build an 'ecological paradise' at his Tesla facility in the state. At that site, roughly 32 kilometres away from the SpaceX factory, the world's richest person is planning a publicly accessible park on Tesla property featuring walking and biking trails, a riverfront boardwalk and fishing areas. SpaceX's plans rank among the more elaborate private outdoor oases intended to rejuvenate and retain office workers, ranging from Capital One's rooftop mini-golf course to LG Electronics's walking trails. Other outdoor corporate spaces, such as Expedia Group's quarter-mile-long beachfront in Seattle, offer some public access. Sign Up Sign Up SpaceX's Bastrop facility is set to expand by one million square feet over the next three years, employing hundreds of additional workers. Bastrop County has issued a development permit for activity at the site but has not identified it as a public park since that would require additional reviews and permitting, a spokesperson for the county said. A representative for SpaceX did not respond to requests for comment. The proposed SpaceX Project Echo site comes with extra challenges as it lies beside a river on a designated floodplain. As a result, the company has nixed original plans to put permanent structures and solar lighting on the site, according to the documents. Meanwhile, Bastrop County is requiring elevation certificates at three critical stages of construction, in accordance with flood damage prevention orders, the county spokesperson said. BLOOMBERG
