'Bengaluru landlords are a menace': Landlord deducts Rs 82K from deposit with no proof, tenant left stunned

Economic Times15 hours ago

A Bengaluru-based entrepreneur recently took to LinkedIn to narrate an upsetting experience involving his landlord, triggering a wave of responses from others who had faced similar issues across Indian cities. The businessman, who had recently relocated from his previous residence, shared how his security deposit of Rs 1.5 lakh was returned only in part—with more than half being withheld under unclear justifications.According to his detailed account, he had occupied a two-bedroom apartment for two years. Throughout his tenancy, he never had any direct contact with the landlord. All interactions were conducted through a building manager, who acted as the middleman. The entrepreneur recalled having heard rumors about the landlord's past behavior with former tenants. Although this had mentally prepared him for possible issues, the scale and nature of the deductions still caught him off guard. When it was time to vacate, the deductions began pouring in. A sum of Rs 55,000 was taken out for repainting, Rs 25,000 labeled under ambiguous 'miscellaneous damages,' and an additional Rs 2,000 charged merely for using the lift. The tenant asked for detailed bills to understand the charges, only to be handed an unprofessional, handwritten sheet listing vague reasons without supporting documents or receipts. In the end, he received Rs 68,000 back—barely 45% of the initial deposit. Reflecting on the situation, the entrepreneur acknowledged his own lapse in not investigating the landlord's history or setting clear contractual terms beforehand. However, he emphasized that the broader issue lies in the unregulated and often exploitative behavior of property owners in the city."I hope there's change. I hope there's help. And I hope this reaches the people who can do something about it.Because Bengaluru landlords are becoming a menace..." he wrote. His post concluded with a plea for change, expressing frustration at the growing difficulties tenants face in Bengaluru and hoping that greater awareness might eventually prompt reforms in the rental space. The story struck a chord with many, as dozens of commenters came forward to share similar experiences, not just from Bengaluru but across India. One commenter noted facing a comparable ordeal in Chennai, where their landlord deducted a large portion of the deposit without transparency. Another mentioned losing Rs 1 lakh out of a Rs 4 lakh deposit and described the emotional distress of trying to reclaim what was rightfully theirs.Another comment read, "This is a common story in Bengaluru, where more than 50% of your deposit will be deducted for silly reasons without any justification. Another great part is that the deposit taken is a huge amount, not just 2-3 months of rent.

PM Modi begins Cyprus, Canada, Croatia tour today, 1st foreign visit after Op Sindoor

Before arriving in Canada on Monday for the G7 Summit, PM Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus, the first by an Indian PM in over two decades, and will also travel to Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian prime minister. PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia from June 15-19, the MEA said Saturday. PM Modi will visit Cyprus on June 15-16, on his way to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16-17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be PM Modi's first foreign tour after Operation Sindoor. 'At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus June 15-16. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades,' the MEA said. In Nicosia, Modi will hold talks with Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, as per the MEA. Cyprus had condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions. The visit will be timely as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. In the second leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, his sixth time in a row. On June 6, PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Carney inviting him for the summit. At the summit, PM Modi will exchange views with G7 heads of states, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on global issues, 'including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues', the MEA said. The Modi-Carney meeting on the sidelines summit next week will be an opportunity to explore ways to reset ties, the MEA said on Thursday. The development comes after more than a year-and-a-half of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, triggered by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's allegations about the 'potential' involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. India rejected the charges as 'absurd' and 'motivated', and consequently, both nations expelled high commissioners and other senior diplomats. PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines, officials say, even as modalities are being worked out. The G7 Leaders' Summit will be held from June 15-17. In the final leg of his tour, PM Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia and hold bilateral discussions with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenković and meet the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic. The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthen its engagement with partners in the EU. In the wake of Operation Sindoor, the PM had cancelled his nation-nation tour to Europe, which included Croatia, Norway and the Netherlands. EdoT Israel-Iran conflict may be in focus Though the G7 Summit agenda this year was focussed on building supply chains for critical minerals, energy security, and countering foreign interference and transnational crime, the focus is likely to be on the Israel-Iran conflict and containing any escalation. PM Narendra Modi is likely to hold discussions with various stakeholders on the issue and express India's stance on dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. CBI books Supertech, its promoter RK Arora for cheating IDBI Bank of ₹126.07 crore

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed an FIR against Noida-based real estate developer Supertech, its promoter RK Arora and others for allegedly cheating IDBI Bank to the tune of ₹ 126.07 crore, officials said on Saturday. Alongside Arora, the construction firm's whole-time directors Sangita Arora, Mohit Arora, Parul Arora, Vikas Kansal, Pradeep Kumar, Anil Kumar Sharma, and Anil Kumar Jain were named in the FIR, apart from the company itself, according to the officials. Officials of the CBI on Saturday conducted coordinated search operations in five locations linked to the accused persons. Searches were conducted at official and residential premises in Noida and Ghaziabad in connection with the case. During the raids, agency officials seized cash amounting to ₹ 28.5 lakh, CBI's spokesperson said in a statement. The case was initiated following a complaint from IDBI Bank, which alleged that the accused had conspired to misappropriate sanctioned loan funds through fraudulent means. According to the FIR, the bank alleged that the company and its directors submitted forged documents to secure credit facilities under false pretenses. The loan account was subsequently declared a wilful default and categorised as fraudulent, allegedly resulting in wrongful losses totalling ₹ 126.07 crore to IDBI Bank Ltd., the CBI said. Observing an 'unholy' nexus between the banks and developers, the Supreme Court in April had directed the CBI to register a preliminary inquiry into projects of realty major Supertech Limited in NCR. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh took into account an affidavit filed by CBI and directed the UP, Haryana DGPs to give a list of DSPs, inspector, constables to the agency to constitute a special investigation team (SIT). The top court further directed the CEOs/administrators of Greater Noida Authority, Noida Authority, secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and RBI to notify one nodal officer from among their senior-most officers within a week to extend necessary assistance to the SIT. The apex court previously said thousands of homebuyers were affected by the subvention scheme, where banks paid 60 to 70 per cent of the home loan amount to the builders without projects being completed within the stipulated time. The apex court had then ordered the CBI to submit a roadmap on how it planned to unravel the "builder-banks nexus" which duped thousands of homebuyers in the NCR and proposed to go into the root of the matter.
