My favourite key Spotify feature gets even better thanks to a new update
One of my favourite Spotify features is the AI-powered DJ that lives in the app. In fact, I'd go as far as saying it makes Spotify one of the top music streamers. It's like having your own radio DJ to curate your tunes on your behalf. Now, the feature is getting even better makes to a new update that adds one of the most requested abilities.
Premium users can now shout song requests directly at their digital DJ, transforming the experience into a proper two-way interaction.
The idea is simple but genius. Just press and hold the DJ button, wait for the beep, and then tell the AI what you're in the mood for. Want synth-heavy electronic for your lunchtime jog? Just ask. Need some painfully dramatic ballads for your 'main character' moment on the bus? Go for it. Whether you want a genre, mood, artist or 'vibe,' Spotify's DJ is all ears.
It's the same DJ personality you know and love – modelled after Spotify's Xavier 'X' Jernigan. It serves up your musical recommendations with just enough friendly banter to keep things interesting without becoming unbearable. Now, though, you're not just listening to DJ X, you get to chat with him. You've got a voice in your own personalised playlist.
This feature, still in beta, won't be fetching podcasts or audiobooks just yet – it's music-only. But for those of us who like a bit of variety and loathe endlessly fiddling with playlists, being able to just say 'give me some modern country for my cowboy era' without shame is a dream.
Spotify's DJ requests feature is available now in English for Premium users in more than 60 markets. If you're on the free tier, sadly, DJ still isn't taking your calls. If you need to upgrade, a Spotify Premium subscription starts at $10.99/£10.99 per month.

Android Auto gets a huge free voice control upgrade
Android Auto is getting smarter – and more hands-free – thanks to a major free upgrade powered by Google's AI assistant, Gemini. Rolling out soon, the update will let drivers do a lot more with just their voice, from sending smarter messages to digging up info buried in Gmail – all without touching the screen or remembering clunky commands. Gemini is Google's next-gen AI assistant; it's already available on some of the best phones, and it's now coming to cars that support Android Auto, with built-in models to follow later this year. Once active, it goes far beyond transcribing your words. You can speak naturally – 'message Joe in Spanish' – and Gemini will remember to translate future messages automatically. You can also fine-tune what you've said before sending, or have it translated into over 40 languages. Feeling peckish mid-road trip? Ask Gemini to 'find good taco places along the way,' then follow up with 'what do the reviews say?' or 'is it kid-friendly?' The assistant ties into Google Maps, Spotify, YouTube Music and even Gmail to help dig up info fast, all while you keep your eyes on the road. There's also Gemini Live – a more conversational mode. Say 'Hey Google, let's talk' and you can use it to brainstorm ideas, prep for meetings, or ask for advice while you drive. For example, 'How do I ask my boss for a promotion?' followed by 'When's the best time of day to bring it up?' This upgrade is part of a wider push to make Google's car software more useful and human. Gemini will be supported on over 250 million Android Auto–enabled vehicles and more than 50 car models with Google built-in, including upcoming launches like the Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5 and Honda Passport. Google's also adding more third-party apps, including games and video (for parked downtime only), and expanding digital car key support to more vehicles from Audi, Volvo and Polestar. If all cassette players were as clever as this one, I'd probably never have swapped to streaming

Then this modern cassette player from We Are Rewind might just be your new obsession. The Edith WE-001 isn't trying to compete with AirPods or hi-res DAPs. In 2025. And I love that. While most tech marches relentlessly forward, Edith takes a stylish sidestep, slinging us back to the mixtape era with just enough modern flair. It's got Bluetooth 5.1 for your wireless cans and USB-C charging (because no one actually misses AA batteries). That said, if you're the sort of audiophile who demands your headphones be tethered with a proper cable, there's a 3.5mm jack waiting for you. The Edith lets you record audio via a mic or 3.5mm line-in. It only supports Type I tapes, so you'll probably need to rummage through your parents' attic – but that's half the fun. Just don't forget your pencil. You'll need it when the tape inevitably unspools, and We Are Rewind gives a nod to this analogue ritual by including one in the box. It's silly – no, perfect. The design is proper eye candy too. With its brushed aluminium shell and unapologetically chunky buttons, Edith's got more in common with vintage Leica cameras than the plasticky Walkmans of old. Cassette tapes are not about pristine audio. The specs are more about embracing imperfections than chasing sonic purity, with 30Hz to 12.5kHz playback.
