Tax Day 2025: What time are taxes due? When is the deadline to file an extension?
Like it or not, Tax Day is here.
Tax Day, the annual day when individual income tax returns are due to the federal government, is Tuesday.
Did you procrastinate on filing your taxes again this year? Are you wondering what time your returns are due? Here's what to know.
Taxes for 2024 are due for most of us by Tuesday, April 15. If you don't expect to file by then, you can request a six-month extension.
According to Kiplinger, if you are filing an electronic return, then you must submit your tax forms by midnight on Tuesday. However, the site recommends that you click submit before 11:59 p.m., as it may take a few minutes for your return to be successfully transmitted to the IRS.
If you're mailing in your tax return this year, you're going to want to make sure it's postmarked by April 15 to avoid any penalties.
Yes, you can submit your tax forms electronically before 11:59 pm. on April 15.
If you don't file your taxes by April 15 ‒ or by the extended deadline, Oct. 15, if you qualify for an extension – you will receive a notice from the IRS that you owe a Failure to File Penalty. The penalty is a percentage of the taxes you didn't pay on time.
The standard penalty is 5% of the tax due for every month the return is late, up to 25% of the unpaid balance.
A smaller penalty of 0.5% is added if you file a return but fail to pay any taxes you owe, or if you get an extension on your return but fail to pay your owed taxes.
If you're able to show reasonable cause why you weren't able to meet your tax obligations, the IRS may be able to remove or reduce some penalties.
The IRS says the deadline to file for an extension is April 15. That gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file without penalties.
Yes. The IRS extends the annual tax deadline for taxpayers who live or do business in areas afflicted by disasters and for people in states with local holidays.
A complete list of disaster-related extensions is on their website.
If you filed your taxes online, you can expect to receive a refund in one month or less, in most cases. The IRS says it issues most refunds within 21 calendar days. Paper returns, however, can take four weeks or more. Allow time for the refund check to reach your bank account or mailbox.
You can check the status of your federal tax refund online at irs.gov/refunds.

IRS Allows Taxpayers To Deposit Payments Directly Into Elon Musk's Bank Account
WASHINGTON—As part of ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency with which it collects money for the world's richest man, officials at the Internal Revenue Service announced a new plan Tuesday allowing taxpayers to deposit payments directly into Elon Musk's bank account. The mandatory new service will reportedly help streamline the tax payment process, bypassing the government entities that traditionally pay Musk—the departments of Defense, Energy, and Transportation, as well as NASA—and instead transferring the funds directly into his checking account. According to the IRS, the updated system will reduce the time it takes for the Tesla and SpaceX CEO to receive taxpayer dollars from a few months to just a few hours. 'We've upgraded the user experience of our website, creating a fast, easy, and secure way for Americans to fulfill their tax obligation to Elon Musk,' said acting IRS commissioner Melanie Krause, adding that the payment hub would also provide more transparency into how the U.S. tax code personally enriches Musk. 'This long overdue change modernizes how we divert revenue away from vital services, optimizing Mr. Musk's ability to collect your hard-earned money.' 'It completely eliminates the outdated system of government loans, subsidies, grants, tax credits, tax rebates, and reimbursements he has used to amass wealth over the past two decades,' Krause continued. 'Now taxpayers can go to and, with a few simple clicks, make a direct deposit that immediately increases Elon Musk's net worth.' Confirming the new approach minimizes inefficiency by transferring money straight to Musk instead of through the maze of federal agencies that currently pay him, White House officials said the overhaul would open more loopholes for his companies to exploit and would add to the tens of billions of dollars the government has already contributed to his personal fortune. They described plans to continue cutting through burdensome red tape with the ultimate goal of circumventing the congressional appropriations process entirely. According to the IRS, enforcement measures have been put in place to make sure all low- and middle-income Americans pay their fair share, and in the coming weeks, workers who have taxes withheld by their employer can expect to see a new line item on their pay stubs that replaces entries such as Social Security and Medicare with one that just says 'Musk.' 'I was initially worried about using an online portal to send 20% of my income to Elon Musk, but the IRS website is pretty straightforward,' said Keith Fairfax, an auto mechanic in Knoxville, TN who told reporters he liked how the system offered real-time tracking of his payments as they were being funneled to the billionaire. 'It's nice to see where my hard-earned money is going, whether I'm helping Elon buy a new mansion, putting fuel in the tank of his private jet, or providing for his 13 known children.' 'But what I like most is when he threatens to use my tax dollars to fund primary challengers for any Republican who opposes Trump's agenda,' he added. 'That's when I know my money is really making a difference.'

Portillo's opening new locations in 2025, including first in Georgia
Portillo's opening new locations in 2025, including first in Georgia Show Caption Hide Caption How to take your hot dog to the next level Hot dogs don't have to be boring. Here are 5 ways to upgrade the classic American staple. ProblemSolved, Reviewed Portillo's, known for its Chicago-style hot dogs, announced its plans to expand as the year nears its halfway point. The fast-casual restaurant chain, which also serves beef and sausage sandwiches and pasta, will have opened up 12 new locations by the end of the year. Among the new restaurants, most will be in Texas and, for the first time, in Georgia. The location in Kennesaw, Georgia, will open during the latter half of 2025, Sara Wirth, the director of PR, IR and internal communications at Portillo's, told USA TODAY. Wirth said Portillo's fiscal 2025 is focused on restaurant growth outside Chicagoland, where the chain already has a presence. The chain's current focus is the Sunbelt, primarily in Texas, but there are plans to enter the Atlanta and San Antonio markets in the second half of 2025, she added. In addition to the new locations, Wirth said Portillo's plans to open its first walk-up restaurant format later this year. Although Portillo's has plans set, Wirth stated that the chain will "continue to fill-in existing markets, including Chicagoland and adjacent markets as opportunities come available." What is Portillo's? The 62-year-old company opened its first hot dog stand called "The Dog House" in 1963 in Villa Park, Illinois. The company began as a trailer with no bathroom and no running water. Owner Dick Portillo spent $1,100 on the trailer, running a 250-foot garden hose from a nearby building into the trailer for water, the company said on its website. Four years after opening 'The Dog House,' the company was renamed Portillo's and moved into a new building. In 2000, the company began shipping nationwide, and five years later, expanded outside of Illinois with a location in Buena Park, California. The company has continued to open new restaurants in states such as Indiana, Arizona, and Florida. The company welcomed new customers this year at three locations in Orland Park, Illinois, and in Katy and Willowbrook, Texas, Wirth said. Saleen Martin is a reporter on USA TODAY's NOW team.
