Waco PD to host career, mentoring and health event
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – Many community organizations in Waco will be providing resources to youth, teens, and young adults at an upcoming event.
The Community Opportunity Event (COE) at the Foster Pavilion will be hosted by the Waco Police Department's Neighborhood Engagement Team and Waco Parks and Recreation. The overall goal is to offer life skills, job opportunities, mentoring programs, mental and physical health information, general educational development, higher education scholarships and grant information to those who need them.
The Southern Career Institute will be present to share valuable insights and services related to careers in the medical field, skilled trades, and truck driving. Their involvement will help connect attendees with training and career pathways that lead to long-term success.
The event will take place at 650 S. University Parks Drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 3rd. For more information about the event, you can go here. You can also watch our interview above.

Killeen ISD students send special gifts to deployed soldiers
KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – A special delivery from Killeen Independent School District students made its way overseas and brought some smiles with it! The district says Meadows Elementary and Venable Village Elementary students partnered with the Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) for HHB Battery, 1-44 Battalion, 69th ADA Brigade to send handwritten letters and creative artwork to deployed soldiers in the Middle East. This effort was in celebration of the Month of the Military Child, and was all about spreading encouragement and joy to those serving far from home. The district says soldiers were thrilled to receive the thoughtful messages from all the young artists and writers! Four Juneteenth celebrations taking place in Vermont
VERMONT (ABC22/FOX44) – Vermonters across the state will be gathering together to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, but it has been traditionally celebrated among African-Americans in the U.S. since 1866, shortly after Emancipation and the Civil War. Vermont was one of the first states to abolish slavery in 1777, before it became part of the U.S.. Juneteenth: The long road to becoming a federal holiday The City of South Burlington will hold its celebration on Thursday, June 19 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Park. The events will include a craft fair and music, and the city says it will be 'highlighting BIPOC food vendors and business owners as well as BIPOC-focused non-profit organizations'. Winooski is holding its 'Juneteenth Block Party' in Rotary Park on Friday, June 20. The event is scheduled from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.. Burlington's Juneteenth festivities will take place on Saturday, June 21 from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m., with celebrations on Church Street and in City Hall Park. City mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak welcomed the public to the event, calling it 'not just a commemoration of freedom, but a powerful statement of our commitment to racial equity and social justice in the City of Burlington.' Will you be getting mail on Juneteenth? Hartford, together with Bethel and Lebanon, New Hampshire, will also be holding their celebration on Saturday, June 21, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Lyman Point Park. The town is welcoming speakers including Vermont state senators Kesha Ram Hinsdale and Joe Major, and New Hampshire executive councillor Karen Liot Hill. More events may still be announced. Sprinkles of History: The Sweet Story Behind National Donut Day
Waco, TX (FOX 44) — It's more than free treats! We celebrate with sprinkles, history, and sweet deals across the country. National Donut Day was started in 1938 by Chicago's Salvation Army in order to honor the Donut Lassies that began serving during World War One. 'They served the men on the front line that were nervous, are scared about their days, and they brought them rations and spiritual advice,' Salvation Army Volunteer Special Events and PR Coordinator Sarah Femister said. 'Then by the end of it, there was nothing left but to make donuts. And they even fried them in the helmets, or anything they could find.' The reason behind using donuts was because they were cheap and a common comfort food. 'It was something sweet that could remind the men of home and hope and everything was going to be all right,' Femister said This year, donut shops are making sweet deals for National Donut Day. 'We released two new seasonal flavors – is going to be our Fruity Pebbles and our Lemonade,' Nightlight Donuts and Coffee General Manager Patricia Sidbury said. 'It's been pretty popular today, and we're offering 20 percent off of all donuts today, as well.' 'Everybody gets a free donut today, and with a free beverage,' Dunkin employees Amya Harper and Kimberly Starts said. The Salvation Army partnered up with local donut stores for National Donut Day to make everyone's day a little sweeter. 'This year we were lucky enough to partner with H-E-B here in town….and a few of our Shipley's to help us get donuts and donut holes to all of our first responders and community partners around Waco,' Feimster said. If you're taking advantage of the donut deals today, make sure to thank the Donut Lassies that inspired the holiday.
