Tourist left dog in hot locker so she could explore castle, say police
The alleged incident, which police confirmed on Sunday, unfolded at the picture-postcard castle, which is famed for its surging turrets and its setting in the Alps near the Austrian border.
It is one of Germany's top tourist attractions.
Despite it being a hot summer's day and the locker already being half-filled by a pram, the woman allegedly proceeded to lock her pet inside the small space.
She then left to tour the castle, according to a statement from police in the nearby town of Fuessen. The dog was subsequently freed from its confinement.
Security staff were alerted and freed the dog, they added.
"The dog was fortunately unharmed but visibly glad when it was rescued from the already hot locker," the police statement said, adding that officers deployed to the scene took him back to the police station.
The police did not specify what breed the dog was but said it was of "medium" size and about 60 cm (two feet) tall at the shoulder. An officer on duty at Fuessen police station contacted by telephone said the dog was a mongrel.
Police said they had initiated criminal proceedings against the owner on suspicion of breaking Germany's animal welfare law.
Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Germany's most-visited attractions, with more than 1.3 million people passing through its halls each year.
Visitor numbers reach as many as 6,000 per day in the summer months.
It was built as a private residence for King Ludwig II of Bavaria and opened in the late 1800s shortly after his death.
It features Gothic, Romanesque and Byzantine architecture and was designed to mimic German castles from the Middle Ages.

Teen hospitalized after being shot multiple times in Plainfield, Illinois, police say
A 17-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting in Plainfield, Illinois, over the weekend. On Saturday, around 10:45 p.m., Plainfield police and fire crews responded to the 24400 block of West Lockport Street for a person shot. A mass shooting in Philadelphia's Grays Ferry neighborhood left three people dead and nine others injured early Monday morning, police say. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the shooting occurred on the 1500 block of South 27th Street just before 1 a.m. Police said nine victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and three others were taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. One additional victim walked into the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania's Pavilion Campus. Bethel said at least eight of the victims were taken by police. He added there may have been an exchange of gunfire and dozens of shell casings were recovered from the scene. Police said one person was taken into custody with a weapon, though their role in the shooting is unclear. Officers had been monitoring the block earlier in the weekend after responding to prior disturbances and arrests related to loud music and gatherings. Police were dispatched to a nearby priority call when they heard gunfire on their return. Bethel described the incident as part of a violent Fourth of July weekend in the city, which saw six homicides and numerous shootings. Over the weekend, eight people were injured after a shooter, possibly multiple shooters, opened fire at a South Philadelphia nightclub. Man killed after shooting at a US Border Patrol facility in southern Texas
McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A 27-year-old man was killed Monday after opening fire at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, authorities said. Federal agents returned fire at Ryan Louis Mosqueda, who had an assault rifle and was carrying a utility vest, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told reporters Monday morning. The shooting took place at a Border Patrol facility across the street from McAllen International Airport. Law enforcement said they found another rifle and more ammunition. Rodriguez said the man's motive is currently unknown. One officer was injured in the shooting, but Rodriguez said it was unclear if the injury was from shrapnel or a bullet.
