Your Samsung Galaxy Watch might get significantly smarter with next update

Digital Trends08-05-2025

Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra alongside its folding phones in July last year, and with them came a number of clever software features, including offering you an Energy Score every morning based on a collection of metrics.
A number recent reports from Android Authority based on several APK teardowns suggest Samsung's smartwatches could be in for a treat in the coming months when the rumored One UI 8 Watch update lands, however.

There are three separate reports revealing a breakdown of features that may appear on the Galaxy smartwatches, with the most prevalent being One UI 7's Now Bar making its way over from Galaxy phones. According to the teardown from a leaked version of the SecClockWorkSysUI (version 4.0.57) APK, Android Authority found strings of code suggesting Samsung is tailoring the Now Bar for the smartwatch interface.
The report claims the Now Bar on the Galaxy Watch could land as a simple icon, or a more comprehensive display showing both an icon and text when the screen is on. It's said the Now Bar might be a widget system showing contextually aware data without you needing to navigate away from the main watch face, with information like Media Controls, the Now Brief and live sports scores, as well as Maps appearing.
It was also suggested that gesture-based actions will allow you to double pinch in order to open the Now Bar on your Galaxy Watch, which we presume will work in a similar way to how double pinching on Apple Watch allows you to perform certain actions like starting a workout or accepting a call.
What else might One UI 8 Watch bring to your Samsung smartwatch?
In a separate report, Android Authority found a code string in the Battery app (version 4.0.00.8) for Galaxy Watch that suggests Samsung is working on introducing a battery protection feature to its wearables too. If true, it could see a charging limit of a certain percentage, like 80 per cent, to protect the overall battery life.
Lastly, there's also a report suggesting there could be some new watch face features coming with One UI 8 Watch too. Android Authority suggests Samsung could be working on new options for watch faces on Galaxy Watches, as well as the ability for users to set favorite faces and randomize which one is active. Sadly, the teardown didn't see anything for automating that randomization, but it did indicate there may be some scope for recommending new watch face options based on the ones you have already selected as your favorites.
For now, none of these features are confirmed by Samsung to be coming to Galaxy Watch models, but if any of them are true, it looks like One UI 8 Watch could be an exciting update.

What colors will the Galaxy Z Flip 7, Flip 7 FE, and Fold 7 come in? This leak may have the answer

Alex Walker-Todd / Android Authority TL;DR A report claims the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE will be available with 128GB or 256GB of storage. The normal Flip 7 is said to have 256GB or 512GB of storage. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 may come in black, blue, and silver options. Samsung is set to launch a handful of products in its upcoming Unpacked event. We know that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7 will likely be headliners, but these devices could also be joined by the company's next smartwatches. There have even been rumors about an FE Flip model waiting in the wings. A new report has now given us details about the colors and storage numbers for these devices. According to WinFuture, this summer's Galaxy Unpacked presentation should include the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, Flip 7 FE, Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and a new Galaxy Watch Ultra. It's reported that the Flip 7 FE will be available in 128GB or 256GB storage configurations. As for the colors, the outlet mentions black and white, but other color variations are unknown. Meanwhile, there are a few more details about the normal Flip 7. It's said that this foldable features 256GB and 512GB storage options, which is the same amount of storage in the Flip 6. Apparently, there are three available colors, which include blue, black, and 'Coral Red.' The Fold 7 may also come in three color variations, including 'Blue Shadow,' black, and silver. There's no information on the storage configurations for the Fold 7. Moving on to the smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 8 is reported to be available in 40mm and 44mm sizes and comes in 'Graphite' or silver. The Classic version, on the other hand, may sport black or white colors. We recently got a few early CAD-based renders of the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic in its black hue, if you want to get an idea of how it may look. Unfortunately, there are no details on the next Ultra model. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . You can stay anonymous or get credit for the info, it's your choice.

Android 16 QPR1 may stop HDR 'flashbangs' with enhanced brightness controls

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority TL;DR Google is developing an 'Enhanced HDR brightness' setting for Android 16 QPR1 to give users system-level control over screen brightening from HDR content. This upcoming feature will include both a toggle to disable HDR support entirely and a slider to adjust the intensity of HDR effects. It aims to prevent jarring brightness shifts from HDR media, a solution Samsung users already have with a similar feature in One UI 7. When you're using your smartphone at night, you probably prefer to keep its brightness low to avoid blinding yourself or disturbing your partner. However, if you come across HDR media at night, your phone may automatically boost its brightness to display the content properly. This sudden brightness shift can be jarring, which is why some apps offer options for disabling HDR media support. Google now aims to address this problem at the system level in an upcoming Android 16 release. Google is currently testing an 'Enhanced HDR brightness' setting that will allow you to control how much HDR content brightens your Pixel phone's screen. This setting, expected in an upcoming release under Settings > Display & touch > Enhanced HDR brightness, will include both a toggle to disable HDR support entirely as well as a slider to adjust the HDR effect's intensity. Demonstrating this feature on camera is challenging, but it's easy to describe what it does. Basically, with the feature disabled, a 'standard' (SDR) image and a HDR image will look the same on screen. When it's enabled, adjusting the slider will dynamically alter the brightness of specific elements within an HDR image, such as the sky or water. This control is possible because the HDR display mode enhances supported images and videos by boosting their brightness and expanding their color range and clarity. Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority If you've ever been bothered by social media apps like Instagram flash banging you upon encountering an HDR image, you'll likely appreciate this new feature when it rolls out. The 'Enhanced HDR brightness' setting isn't available in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1, but it could arrive in a future beta or the stable release. Samsung phone users, however, won't have to wait; the Korean tech giant has already implemented a similar feature in its One UI 7 release. Got a tip? Talk to us! Samsung Urges Galaxy Users to Update Anti-Theft Tools

Samsung is urging (literally) Samsung phone users across the UK to enable and update the latest anti-theft tools now available on Galaxy devices as part of a new public safety campaign. This week, over 40 million Samsung Account holders in the UK will get a public safety security message through Samsung's customer communication channels and the Samsung Members platform. Samsung has started to bring One UI 7 with security updates to quite a few Galaxy devices, and with this, they have added new theft-protection and security delay anti-robbery tools. These updates began with the Galaxy S25 series in February and are now reaching more Galaxy smartphones, including the S24, S23, S22 series, and Galaxy Z Fold and Flip models. The company is said to be working closely with the Home Office and industry partners to help address mobile phone theft and improve user safety. The One UI 7 update builds on existing protections with new anti-theft tools such as identity check, biometric authentication, and security delay. The new Theft Protection suite is made to keep personal data safe even in probable theft situations. It includes Theft Detection Lock, which uses machine learning to spot theft-like motions and instantly lock the screen, and Offline Device Lock, which locks the screen if the device is offline for a long time. Remote Lock lets users secure a stolen device using their phone number and a quick verification step. Anti-robbery additions in One UI 7 include Identity Check, which requires biometric authentication for sensitive changes in unfamiliar locations, and Security Delay, which triggers a one-hour pause before biometric data can be reset, giving users time to lock a stolen device from another device. Samsung says these tools are now available on several flagship devices, with additional updates planned.
