EU chief delays retaliation for US tariffs in search of deal
BRUSSELS: European Union (EU) chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday (Jul 13) that Brussels will keep holding off on hitting back at United States steel and aluminium tariffs, as it seeks a deal to ward off broader 30 per cent levies. US President Donald Trump on Saturday threw months of painstaking negotiations into disarray by announcing he would hammer the 27-nation bloc with sweeping 30 per cent tariffs if no agreement is reached by Aug 1. "The United States has sent us a letter with measures that would come into effect unless there is a negotiated solution, so we will therefore also extend the suspension of our countermeasures until early August," von der Leyen told journalists. "At the same time, we will continue to prepare for the countermeasures so we're fully prepared," she added. The European Commission president insisted that the EU has "always been very clear that we prefer a negotiated solution. This remains the case, and we will use the time that we have now till Aug 1." The EU's current suspension of its retaliation over US steel and aluminium tariffs had been set to expire overnight from Monday to Tuesday. Brussels has readied duties on US goods worth around 21 billion euros in response to the levies Trump slapped on metal imports earlier this year. But it announced in April it was holding off on those measures to give space to find a broader trade agreement with the Trump administration.

SpaceX to invest US$2 billion in Musk's xAI startup
[NEW YORK] SpaceX has committed US$2 billion to xAI as part of a US$5 billion equity round, deepening the ties between tech billionaire Elon Musk's ventures as his artificial intelligence startup races to compete with rival OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. The investment follows xAI's merger with X and values the combined company at US$113 billion, with the Grok chatbot now powering Starlink support and eyed for future integration into Tesla's Optimus robots, the report added. In response to a post on X about whether Tesla, could also invest in xAI, Elon Musk said on Sunday (Jul 13), 'It would be great, but subject to board and shareholder approval,' without confirming or denying the Journal report on SpaceX's investment plans in xAI. SpaceX, xAI and Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters could not immediately confirm the WSJ report. Despite recent controversies involving Grok's responses, Musk has called it 'the smartest AI in the world,' and xAI continues to spend heavily on model training and infrastructure. REUTERS

Israel launches communications satellite from Florida
JERUSALEM: Israel on Sunday (Jul 13) said it had launched a new national communications satellite on board a SpaceX rocket from the United States. The Dror 1 satellite was blasted into orbit on a Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral in Florida, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the foreign ministry said. "This (US)$200 million 'smartphone in space' will power Israel's strategic and civilian communications for 15 years," the ministry wrote on X. Accompanying video footage showed the reusable, two-stage rocket lift off into the night sky. SpaceX said the launch happened at 1.04am in Florida (1.04pm, Singapore time). IAI, which called the launch "a historic leap for Israeli space technology", said when it announced the project to develop and build Dror 1 that it was "the most advanced communication satellite ever built in Israel". In September 2016, an unmanned Falcon 9 rocket exploded during a test in Florida, destroying Israel's Amos-6 communications satellite, which was estimated to have cost between US$200 and US$300 million.
