Envision Energy unveils India's first race car built entirely from e-waste
Envision Energy has unveiled India's first race car made entirely from electronic waste, in collaboration with environmental nonprofit EarthDay.org.
The 'Recover-E' car is the second such vehicle globally, following a similar prototype launched at the London E-Prix in 2023.
Constructed using discarded electronics such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets, the car is designed to demonstrate the potential of circular design and highlight the growing problem of e-waste in India. The country is the third-largest generator of e-waste globally, according to the Global E-waste Monitor 2024.
'The Recover-E car is not just a concept but a movement towards greener solutions for tomorrow,' said R P V Prasad, managing director of Envision Energy India. He added that the project is a conceptual demonstration of how future cars or car parts could be derived from e-waste.
James Mercer, commercial director at Envision Racing, said the initiative is a symbolic representation of e-waste issues and aims to prove that innovation and sustainability can coexist. Envision Racing is part of Envision Energy's Formula E team, which won the Formula E Teams' Championship in 2023.
EarthDay.org said the initiative aligns with the 55th anniversary of Earth Day and this year's global theme, 'Our Power, Our Planet.' Karuna Singh, regional director for Asia at the organisation, said the project aims to promote clean energy and circular economy practices.
While the Recover-E car is not intended for commercial production, Envision said it is meant to spark conversations around responsible consumption and reuse of waste.
Envision Energy operates in wind energy, battery storage, and green hydrogen. Its India operations are part of a broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality across its global value chain by 2028. The company also manages a carbon-neutral fund and has engineering centres across Asia, Europe, and North America.
EarthDay.org, founded in 1970, runs environmental advocacy campaigns worldwide and claims to mobilise over one billion people annually. The Recover-E project is among its key awareness initiatives in India for 2025.

Webinar held on registering old age homes, women's homes, and hostels on e-Sevai portal
The Department of Social Welfare and SimpleGov organised a webinar on how to apply for services that are available on the e-Sevai portal. The webinar focused on three services – registration of old age homes, registration and licence for homes for women; and licence for working women's hostels. Many NGOs, especially those in the hostel industry, took part in the webinar. Last month, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched SimpleGov, which has simplified the process of availing various services and schemes offered by the government. P.W.C. Davidar, Advisor (Digital and Simplified Governance) to Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TneGA), explained how easy it was to obtain licences now. 'For those who don't have access to the internet, they can visit the nearest e-Sevai centre. We have done away with the practice of asking for unnecessary documents. One can now download the licences online,' he said. 'All necessary documents can be uploaded by the applicants themselves. Once the payment is done, they can check the status and download the certificates,' Mr. Davidar said. The validity of some of the licences have been extended. For instance, the licence for Homes for Women is now valid for 10 years. In the case of old age homes, if there are fewer than 20 people operating under a cooperative model and supporting each other, registration is not required. However, if they operate as a trust, registration is mandatory. Obtaining sanitation and fire certificates has also been simplified. In the case of a public building licence, any empanelled engineer can provide a structural soundness certificate. For hostels obtaining new licences, renewal and closure can be done online. In case the application has been returned, its status can be checked online. All information related to these services is available on where registration can also be done. Homes for women are run by NGOs to provide shelter, food, clothing, counselling, training, medical support and legal aid to women in difficult circumstances. The registration of such homes is mandatory to ensure proper regulation, monitoring, and adherence to standards for the safety and well-being of the residents. Maruti launches flexible EMI plan to upgrade small cars to Grand Vitara
Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) is planning to launch a financial scheme aimed at making SUV ownership more accessible for entry-level car owners--including Alto, WagonR or similar segment buyers. Under this initiative, customers who own a small car of any brand, can purchase the Grand Vitara sport utility vehicle (SUV) through an EMI plan. The scheme, which will be piloted in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, allows customers to buy the Grand Vitara at a monthly instalment of nearly ₹9,999, which is nearly 20 per cent lower than standard EMIs available in the market, the company said. 'Our target is people who already own a small car and are ready to move want to make that upgrade easy and accessible,' said Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, sales & marketing, MSIL, in an interview with Business Standard. According to the plan, the customer's existing car will be treated as the down payment and its valuation will vary based on factors such as age, ownership history, and mileage. Customers will also be eligible for an exchange bonus. The remaining cost will be financed and paid back over a five-year tenure. One of the key features of the scheme is the guaranteed buyback option. After five years or 75,000 km of usage, customers will have the option to return the vehicle at an assured value of 50 per cent of the original ex-showroom price. Alternatively, they can retain the car by paying the remaining balance. 'This is a flexible and low-risk option for customers. It gives them a sense of assurance and helps ease the financial burden of moving into a more premium vehicle,' Banerjee said. This is the first time a mass market car manufacturer has launched such an EMI upgrade scheme. The offer is valid across all variants of the Grand Vitara SUV, with EMI amounts varying depending on the model selected. Banerjee added that the company will monitor the response in the three pilot cities. 'If the model works well, we'll expand it to other cities and extend it to more models -- especially our upcoming e-Vitara,' he said. Global premium automakers have long offered trade-in and flexible finance options to make high-end models more accessible. Mercedes-Benz, for example, offers a 'guaranteed future value' plan that bundles easy EMIs with assured returns on trade-ins. These initiatives have helped luxury brands attract younger professionals, a strategy Maruti now seems to be adapting for the mass-market SUV buyer. The timing of Maruti's scheme also coincides with a prolonged slump in India's small-car segment. Maruti Chairman RC Bhargava has previously flagged this trend as a concern, warning that a continued drop in naturally affordable small cars could hamper overall market growth. With vehicle prices steadily rising across segments and financing costs remaining a concern for many middle-income households, the company believes this initiative could tap into a large, underserved segment of aspiring SUV buyers. 'This kind of scheme gives them affordability, flexibility, and a clear exit path — all rolled into one,' Banerjee noted.

India, Pak Conflict Had "Negligible Impact" On Economic Activity: RBI Governor
Mumbai: Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Friday said the India-Pakistan conflict, following the Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians were killed, had a negligible impact on economic activity. After the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 people were killed, Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor and hit terror infrastructure in Pakistan. Indian armed forces on May 7 carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke. In retaliation, Pakistan, too, launched its offensive and bordering districts were affected. "The conflict... had a very, very limited, negligible impact on economic activity. It did have some impact for those days, especially in northern India, airports being closed, air passenger traffic did certainly decrease, but there was no major supply chain disruption, etc," he said. So, he said, it does not have any impact on economic activity, growth, inflation. For few days, he said, "Prices in those regions, those sectors, had gone up, but it has all normalised. It does not have any major impact on the economy." On the recent rise in Covid-19 cases, he said it is not a matter of concern as of now. "I think it has become one of the viruses, and hopefully it should stay like that," he added.
