Fed to keep rates on hold at least until September as inflation risks linger: poll

The U.S. Federal Reserve will keep interest rates on hold for at least another couple of months, according to most economists polled by Reuters, as risks linger that inflation may resurge due to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
With most trade negotiations incomplete as the July 9 deadline for a 90-day pause on tariffs announced in April approaches, forecasters have been reluctant to change their already fragile economic outlook.
Rising concerns about U.S. debt and a deluge of bond issuance fuelled by a sweeping tax cut bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, but not the Senate, are not helping.
Data on Friday showed no signs of significant stress building in the labor market, suggesting the Fed is in no hurry to cut interest rates any time soon.
All but two of the 105 economists in the June 5-10 Reuters poll predicted the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee would keep the fed funds rate unchanged at its June 17-18 meeting in a 4.25%-4.50% range, where it has been since the start of the year.
Around 55% of economists - 59 of 105 - said the Fed would resume cutting next quarter, most likely in September and in line with interest rate futures pricing. That outlook has not changed from last month.
'As long as the labor market looks fine, we expect the FOMC to continue to stay on hold, and use rhetoric to bolster their inflation-fighting credibility. Until there is a cost, why signal otherwise?' said Jonathan Pingle, chief U.S. economist at UBS.
'At the moment 'grey area' seems more 'charcoal'... the Committee is facing a substantial amount of uncertainty.'
Inflation expectations have remained elevated on predictions of high U.S. trade barriers. The administration has recently raised aluminum and steel tariffs to 50% from 25%.
U.S. officials are currently engaged in trade talks with top Chinese officials in London, looking to secure a breakthrough.
In the meantime, consumers are expecting price pressures to surge in coming years, while economists predict inflation to remain well above the Fed's 2% target until at least 2027.
A significant 42% minority of poll participants - 44 of 105 - expect the FOMC to resume cutting rates in the fourth quarter of 2025 or later, with 20 predicting no cuts this year.
'High tariffs are here to stay, and they will produce elevated inflation that is sustained well into 2026,' said James Egelhof, chief U.S. economist at BNP Paribas.
'The Fed will see little need to cut... the lesson we have from history is, if inflation becomes entrenched in the economy, it can be very hard and very costly to remove.'
There was no clear consensus on where the rate would be by end-2025, but about 80% of economists - 85 of 105 - predicted the fed funds rate in a 3.75%-4.00% range or higher.
Trump called for a full percentage point reduction to 3.25%-3.50% immediately on Friday.
The president's signature bill making its way through Congress is expected to add $2.4 trillion to an already enormous $36.2 trillion debt pile, making a rate cut more unlikely.
'With more fiscal stimulus coming out of the tax and spending bill, the Fed sees less of a case for supporting the economy with lower interest rates,' said Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank.
'The fiscal policy looks set to push the deficit (higher)... exerting continued upward pressure on long-term interest rates that will be a headwind for credit-intensive parts of the economy like the housing market and business capital spending.'
The economy, which contracted 0.2% last quarter on a widening trade deficit, is forecast to grow just 1.4% this year, a sharp fall from 2.8% in 2024. Next year, it was predicted to expand 1.5%. That outlook was unchanged from May.

Trump's tariffs on Canada, world to stay in place during case, court rules
A federal appeals court agreed on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs will remain in place while a case is heard — extending an emergency stay granted after a lower court found the devastating duties unlawful. The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit found 'a stay is warranted under the circumstances.' It provides a temporary victory for the Trump administration as it hits its first legal barriers for realigning global trade. 'The Trump administration is legally using the powers granted to the executive branch by the Constitution and Congress to address our country's national emergencies of persistent goods trade deficits and drug trafficking,' said White House spokesman Kush Desai in an emailed statement Tuesday. 'The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' stay order is a welcome development, and we look forward to ultimately prevailing in court.' Story continues below advertisement The U.S. Court of International Trade last month said Trump does not have the authority to wield tariffs on nearly every country through the use of the International Economic Emergency Powers Act of 1977. The act, usually referred to by the acronym IEEPA, is a national security statute that gives the U.S. president authority to control economic transactions after declaring an emergency. The ruling from the three-judge panel at the New York-based federal court in May said 'any interpretation of IEEPA that delegates unlimited tariff authority is unconstitutional.' It said 'the challenged tariff orders will be vacated,' representing a nationwide injunction against any further imposition of the duties. The Trump administration quickly was granted an emergency motion, essentially freezing the decision by the trade court that blocked the so-called 'Liberation Day' and fentanyl-related tariffs. The appeals court upheld that stay but noted the need for an expedited hearing, saying 'these cases present issues of exceptional importance warranting expedited en banc consideration.' A proposed schedule says arguments are expected in court by July 31. That means that countries will continue to be hit by those duties, for now. 5:32 Economist says counter-tariffs on the United States would hurt Canada George Mason University law professor Ilya Somin called it an 'unfortunate decision.' Somin, along with the Liberty Justice Center, represents five American small businesses pushing against the tariffs. Story continues below advertisement He noted that the court did go out of its way to indicate this is not a ruling on the merits, and ordered an expedited schedule for consideration of the case. Stock markets have been in turmoil and supply chains have been upended as Trump used unprecedented presidential power to enact his tariffs. Up until Trump's return to the White House, IEEPA had never been used by a president to impose tariffs. Trump hit Canada with economywide duties in March after he declared an emergency at the northern border related to the flow of fentanyl. He partially paused levies a few days later for imports that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade. U.S. government data shows a minuscule volume of fentanyl is seized at the northern border. Trump took his trade war to the world in April with duties on nearly every country saying America's trade deficits amounted to a national emergency. The president walked back the most devastating duties a few hours later but left a 10 per cent universal tariff in place for most countries. Story continues below advertisement Trump said the 90-day pause would give countries time to negotiate a deal. The president said if countries didn't comply he would simply set tariff rates himself. 2:41 U.S. trade court 'brazenly abused' judicial powers to block Trump tariffs, WH says White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said that the Supreme Court should 'put an end to this' and called the lower court's decision 'judicial overreach.' The appeal ruling will consider two different cases that were pushing against Trump's tariffs. One included the five American small businesses against Trump's worldwide tariffs, and the other stemmed from 12 states arguing against both the 'Liberation Day' duties and the fentanyl-related tariffs. At least seven lawsuits are challenging the tariffs. Lawyers for the businesses say IEEPA does not mention tariffs and the U.S. Constitution gives power over taxes and tariffs to Congress. They say Trump is misusing the statute. Story continues below advertisement Lawyers for Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Vermont argued that tariffs make U.S. trade policy dependent on Trump's whims. Thirty-three senators also filed an amicus brief — a legal submission from a group that's not party to the action — in the case, saying the duties would cause harm to small- and medium-sized businesses while also grabbing powers that should be assigned to Congress. 'Small businesses do not have cash-on-hand or capital reserves to pay the increased tariffs, nor can they quickly adapt to them by modifying supply chains,' it said. 'If they cannot pass on the tariff costs to consumers — which would create additional harms for… constituents — many face letting employees go or filing for bankruptcy. Even a few weeks of additional tariffs means small businesses will suffer irreparable harm.' Canada is also being hit with tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles. Trump used different powers under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to enact those duties.

Does This News Make Meta Platforms Stock a Buy?
Several years ago, Facebook parent Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) changed its name, partly to reflect its newfound focus on its metaverse ambitions. Although the company is still working on that project, its initiatives in artificial intelligence (AI) garnered more headlines recently. Meta is looking to transform its business through AI, and recent news suggests it may take a significant step in that direction by the end of 2026. Let's examine these developments and determine whether they make Meta Platforms stock a buy. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Meta is looking to automate its ad business Meta Platforms makes most of its money from advertising to its massive user base. As of the end of the first quarter, Meta boasted 3.43 billion daily active users across its websites and apps, which include Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. However, Meta's ad business could become even better if it could provide more value to advertisers by improving their ad creation and launch processes. It already started to do that with the use of AI-powered tools -- for instance, helping advertisers define their target audience using AI. While businesses typically need to conduct research to figure that out, AI is making the job faster, easier, and cheaper. However, Meta is looking to take the next steps. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it aims to automate the process with AI from start to finish. Businesses will be able to use the technology at every step of the way -- to create images, tweak them, generate appropriate text, define the target audience, and more. Meta Platforms aims to complete this by the end of next year. What does this mean for investors? One more reason to buy the stock If successful, Meta Platforms' new AI tools for ads could reduce advertising expenses for companies while they achieve similar (or perhaps even better) results. If that's the case, demand for Meta's AI-powered tools to post ads across its websites and apps would increase significantly, leading to even more impressive sales. To be clear, Meta's ad business would be a key growth driver anyway. The digital ad market is still growing, and the tech leader's deep ecosystem of users makes it a valuable target for business clients. However, these new initiatives would further enhance this already highly profitable offering. Meanwhile, Meta is also improving engagement thanks to AI. Its algorithms have helped increase the amount of time users spend on Facebook and Instagram, so the company is working on both sides of the commerce equation with AI. These efforts should pay off in the long run, especially considering it has other potential growth drivers. It has been ramping up commercial messaging on WhatsApp, as well as working on the metaverse. Now, Meta Platforms isn't without risk. U.S.-China trade tensions could impact its financial results. During the first quarter, it received less advertising revenue from Asia-based retailers after the Trump administration ended a loophole that allowed some imports from China to enter the U.S. tax-free. Still, despite this headwind, Meta Platforms' first-quarter results were excellent. Revenue increased by 16% year over year to $42.3 billion, while net earnings per share came in at $6.43, 37% higher than the year-ago period. There might be more uncertainty if the trade wars continue, but Meta Platforms is showing that it can perform reasonably well despite that. Some might also point to the company's valuation as a reason to avoid the stock. Meta's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is 27.4 as of this writing, much higher than the average of 19.1 for the communication services industry. But given the Facebook parent's excellent results and strong prospects, it seems worth a premium. In my view, Meta Platforms will more than justify its relatively steep valuation in five years or more, which still makes it a stock worth owning for a long time.
