According to Reuters, energy consumption by AI data centers in the US is expected to triple by 2028, accounting for as much as 12 percent of the nation's total electricity supply.
Given this significant strain on the power grid, nuclear energy is becoming more critical as a key energy source to address this challenge. Unlike intermittent renewables such as wind and solar, nuclear power offers a stable, continuous supply capable of satisfying the demand of energy-intensive infrastructures such as AI data centers.
Despite this potential, however, nuclear power plant construction in the US is progressing much more slowly than expected. Plant Vogtle in Georgia, for instance, was delayed by over seven years with excess costs ballooning to about $20 billion, while the VC Summer expansion project in South Carolina was abandoned at 40 percent completion after drawing investments worth $10 billion. Similar setbacks have plagued nuclear projects in other nations. Electricite de France's Flamanville 3 in France and Finland's Olkiluoto 3 suffered delays extending over a decade and costs exceeding the tens of billions. These cases highlight the complexity and unpredictability of nuclear projects, underscoring the need for more efficient and cost-effective alternatives.
On the other hand, South Korea is globally recognized for its competitive nuclear power plant construction. What the nation brings to the table is its unparalleled ability to deliver projects on time and on budget. The successful completion of four APR-1400 reactors for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE within the agreed timeframe and budget stands as a testament to South Korea's efficient supply chain management and robust project execution. By working together, South Korea and the US can alleviate uncertainties in construction and execute stable, cost-effective nuclear projects.
Moreover, strengthening nuclear cooperation between the US and South Korea is essential for energy security. The US currently relies on Russia for 25 percent of its enriched uranium -- a clear vulnerability in its nuclear supply chain that can be readily addressed through Korea-US cooperation. Resuming the High-Level Bilateral Commission on nuclear energy would be a critical step in that direction. The HLBC serves as the official platform for coordinating bilateral nuclear policies, engaging in far-reaching discussions on technological cooperation, supply chain stabilization and nonproliferation. Jumpstarting these talks will enable our two nations to successfully complete nuclear projects on the basis of our close cooperation while solidifying our leadership in the future nuclear market.
If the US and South Korea cooperate, the two nations could not only secure leadership in nuclear construction within the US but also in the global market. With the US providing the technological expertise and funding, and South Korea demonstrating its proven capabilities in engineering, procurement and construction, we can ensure the effective rollout of large-scale light-water reactors and small modular reactors. Not only will this partnership guarantee reliable energy that is so crucial in the era of AI but it will also help respond to the growing global demand for nuclear power.
US-South Korea nuclear cooperation will be a strategic alliance that goes beyond mere industrial collaboration, helping to design the energy security and economic future of both nations. The revival of the HLBC will be a vital step toward advancing this collaboration and resolving the energy demand in the Age of AI while positioning both nations as leaders in the global nuclear energy industry.

Naver to debut 'AI Tab' next year for smarter, task-based search
Naver on Thursday announced plans to roll out a new AI-powered search interface dubbed the 'AI Tab' next year, marking a major step in its evolution from keyword-based queries to interactive, task-completing search experiences. Unveiled during a press briefing in Seoul earlier in the day, the AI Tab is designed to provide users with multi-turn conversational capabilities, enabling them to complete complex tasks, such as trip planning, real-time schedule changes and reservations, without leaving the search interface. 'For example, if a user searches for 'places to visit in Jeju Island with a 5-year-old,' the AI Tab will deliver personalized recommendations via a place agent, suggest optimized routes using Naver Maps and handle bookings, all in one flow,' said Kim Jae-yeop, leader of intelligent search X at Naver Search Platform. The upcoming feature builds on Naver's strengths in vertical search, such as shopping, finance and local information, and leverages its proprietary large language models trained on localized Korean data. 'As one of the few global search companies with full control over both infrastructure and content, Naver is uniquely positioned to redefine AI search for Korean users,' said Kim Sang-bum, head of AI search. The company also introduced its broader vision of 'integrated agents' that can interpret user intent and act on it. These agents will be deployed across the unified search experience, with the AI Tab serving as the dedicated interface for the most advanced interactions. While Naver is increasing investments in infrastructure and model development, it is also weighing how to manage access to its content by external AI platforms. Asked whether ChatGPT could access Naver data, Kim said the company was 'carefully considering' its approach amid ongoing changes in the AI ecosystem. US preparing to partially evacuate Iraq embassy over regional security risks, sources say
The US is preparing a partial evacuation of its Iraqi embassy and will allow military dependents to leave locations around the Middle East due to heightened security risks in the region, US and Iraqi sources said on Wednesday. The four US and two Iraqi sources did not specify which security risks had prompted the decision and reports of the potential evacuation pushed up oil prices by more than 4 percent. "The State Department regularly reviews American personnel abroad and this decision was made as a result of a recent review," White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told Reuters when asked about reports of the partial evacuations, without giving further details. A White House official said US President Donald Trump was aware of the move. A US official said the State Department had authorized voluntary departures from Bahrain and Kuwait. The US Embassy in Kuwait said in a statement earlier on Wednesday that it "has not changed its staffing posture and remains fully operational." The partial evacuations come at a moment of heightened tensions in a region already aflame after 18 months of war in Gaza that has raised fears of a wider conflagration pitting the US and Israel against Iran and its allies. Trump has repeatedly threatened to strike Iran if stuttering talks over its nuclear program fail, and in an interview released on Wednesday, he said he was growing less confident that Tehran would agree to stop enriching uranium, a key American demand. Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh also said on Wednesday that if Iran was subjected to strikes it would retaliate by hitting US bases in the region. The US has a military presence across the major oil-producing region, with bases in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized the voluntary departure of military dependents from locations across the Middle East, a US official said. Another US official said that was mostly relevant to family members located in Bahrain — where the bulk of them are based. "The State Department is set to have an ordered departure for (the) US Embassy in Baghdad. The intent is to do it through commercial means, but the US military is standing by if help is requested," a third US official said. Iraq's state news agency cited a government source as saying Baghdad had not recorded any security indication that called for an evacuation. Another US official said that there was no change in operations at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military base in the Middle East and that no evacuation order had been issued for employees or families linked to the US Embassy in Qatar, which was operating as usual. Oil futures climbed $3 on reports of the Baghdad evacuation with Brent crude futures at $69.18 a barrel. Earlier on Wednesday Britain's maritime agency warned that increased tensions in the Middle East may lead to an escalation in military activity that could impact shipping in critical waterways. It advised vessels to use caution while traveling through the Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Straits of Hormuz, which all border Iran. Iraq, a rare regional partner of both the United States and its arch regional foe Iran, hosts 2,500 US troops although Tehran-backed armed factions are linked to its security forces. Tensions inside Iraq have heightened since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, with Iran-aligned armed groups in the country repeatedly attacking US troops, though attacks have subsided since last year. Israel and Iran also twice exchanged fire last year — the first ever such direct attacks between the region's most entrenched enemies — with missiles and war drones hurtling across Iraqi airspace. Top US regional ally Israel has also struck Iran-linked targets across the region, including Iraqi armed groups operating both inside Iraq and in neighboring Syria. In recent months, the United States has deployed more military assets in the Middle East — including B-2 bombers, which have since been replaced, and extended the deployment of a second aircraft carrier, which has since departed. The next round of nuclear talks between Iran and the US are due in the coming days, with Iran expected to hand over a counterproposal after rejecting an offer by Washington. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that a military threat has always been part of the US' negotiation tactics with Iran. 'Any military action against Iran, whether by the US or Israel, will have serious consequences,' the official warned. Iran's UN mission on Wednesday posted on X, "Threats of 'overwhelming force' won't change facts: Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon and US militarism only fuels instability." The statement appeared to be a response to an earlier comment by US Army General Michael "Erik" Kurilla, the head of US Central Command, that he had provided the president with "a wide range of options" to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.
