The age of the AI transformation is upon us, driven by profound breakthroughs in AI technology. Entire industries and societies are poised for disruption by innovations such as ChatGPT, with the United States standing at the forefront of this transformation. Yet these extraordinary strides come with a formidable challenge: the explosive demand for energy to power the AI data centers that enable such growth. According to Reuters, energy consumption by AI data centers in the US is expected to triple by 2028, accounting for as much as 12 percent of the nation's total electricity supply.
Given this significant strain on the power grid, nuclear energy is becoming more critical as a key energy source to address this challenge. Unlike intermittent renewables such as wind and solar, nuclear power offers a stable, continuous supply capable of satisfying the demand of energy-intensive infrastructures such as AI data centers.
Despite this potential, however, nuclear power plant construction in the US is progressing much more slowly than expected. Plant Vogtle in Georgia, for instance, was delayed by over seven years with excess costs ballooning to about $20 billion, while the VC Summer expansion project in South Carolina was abandoned at 40 percent completion after drawing investments worth $10 billion. Similar setbacks have plagued nuclear projects in other nations. Electricite de France's Flamanville 3 in France and Finland's Olkiluoto 3 suffered delays extending over a decade and costs exceeding the tens of billions. These cases highlight the complexity and unpredictability of nuclear projects, underscoring the need for more efficient and cost-effective alternatives.
On the other hand, South Korea is globally recognized for its competitive nuclear power plant construction. What the nation brings to the table is its unparalleled ability to deliver projects on time and on budget. The successful completion of four APR-1400 reactors for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE within the agreed timeframe and budget stands as a testament to South Korea's efficient supply chain management and robust project execution. By working together, South Korea and the US can alleviate uncertainties in construction and execute stable, cost-effective nuclear projects.
Moreover, strengthening nuclear cooperation between the US and South Korea is essential for energy security. The US currently relies on Russia for 25 percent of its enriched uranium -- a clear vulnerability in its nuclear supply chain that can be readily addressed through Korea-US cooperation. Resuming the High-Level Bilateral Commission on nuclear energy would be a critical step in that direction. The HLBC serves as the official platform for coordinating bilateral nuclear policies, engaging in far-reaching discussions on technological cooperation, supply chain stabilization and nonproliferation. Jumpstarting these talks will enable our two nations to successfully complete nuclear projects on the basis of our close cooperation while solidifying our leadership in the future nuclear market.
If the US and South Korea cooperate, the two nations could not only secure leadership in nuclear construction within the US but also in the global market. With the US providing the technological expertise and funding, and South Korea demonstrating its proven capabilities in engineering, procurement and construction, we can ensure the effective rollout of large-scale light-water reactors and small modular reactors. Not only will this partnership guarantee reliable energy that is so crucial in the era of AI but it will also help respond to the growing global demand for nuclear power.
US-South Korea nuclear cooperation will be a strategic alliance that goes beyond mere industrial collaboration, helping to design the energy security and economic future of both nations. The revival of the HLBC will be a vital step toward advancing this collaboration and resolving the energy demand in the Age of AI while positioning both nations as leaders in the global nuclear energy industry.

'LG AI Research will actively leverage Exaone's advanced technology to enhance national AI competencies and drive user-centered innovation in collaboration with Wrtn, a leading AI service provider in Korea,' said Lim Woo-hyung, co-head of LG AI Research. The national initiative is aimed at providing easy and convenient access to AI, with a particular focus on underserved communities and students who may lack opportunities for hands-on experience. To support the effort, Wrtn also signed a partnership with local AI chipmaker FuriosaAI to develop high-performance inference infrastructure. The project will utilize both LG AI Research's Exaone model and FuriosaAI's second-generation inference accelerator, Renegade, Wrtn said. Lee Se-young, founder and CEO of Wrtn, underscored the importance of accessible AI education, saying 'National AI competitiveness begins with the capabilities of everyone. We will work closely with our partners to provide AI technologies and services that people can truly experience and benefit from in everyday life -- not just in labs.'

Korea's OCI Holdings said Tuesday it has transferred the development rights for a 100-megawatt solar power project in Texas, in line with its strategy of advancing projects through early-stage development before selling them to other operators. The project, named Lucky 7, was sold to Sabanci Renewables, a Turkish renewable energy provider, after OCI secured land, conducted site inspections, obtained approvals and completed grid connection. The transaction value was not disclosed. Under the project, Sabanci Renewables will build and operate the solar facilities on a 3 million-square-meter site in Hopkins County, northeast of Dallas, Texas. The 100 MW project can generate enough electricity to power about 30,000 four-person households annually, according to OCI. The deal builds on the strategic partnership between the two companies, following OCI's sale of another 120 MW project in Texas during the second quarter. 'Following Sun Roper, Pepper and now Lucky 7, we've already closed 480 MW of project development and sales this year alone, putting our US solar business on a strong growth trajectory,' said an OCI Holdings spokesperson. 'We plan to accelerate the development and sale of energy storage–integrated solar projects to complement solar's intermittency, especially as demand rises from the ongoing AI data center construction boom in Texas.'

Intel gets $2b lifeline in the form of SoftBank equity investment

Intel is getting a $2 billion capital injection from SoftBank Group in a major vote of confidence for the troubled US chipmaker that is in the middle of a turnaround effort. The equity investment, announced by the two companies Monday, is a lifeline for the once-iconic US chipmaker which has struggled to compete after years of management blunders that left it with virtually no foothold in the booming artificial intelligence chip industry. It will make SoftBank a top-10 shareholder of Intel and add to the Japanese tech investor's ambitious bet on artificial intelligence that includes the $500 billion Stargate US data center project. The deal follows media reports last week that the US government may buy a stake in Intel, after a meeting between new CEO Lip-Bu Tan and President Donald Trump that was sparked by the President's demand for Tan's resignation over his ties to Chinese firms. SoftBank's decision to invest in Intel is not connected to Trump, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "This strategic investment reflects our belief that advanced semiconductor manufacturing and supply will further expand in the United States, with Intel playing a critical role," SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said in a statement. It will pay $23 per Intel share, a slight discount to Monday's closing price of $23.66. SoftBank's investment will come via a primary issuance of common stock by Intel, and, based on the US company's market capitalization at close of trading on Monday, represent an equity stake of just under 2 percent, an Intel spokesperson said. The Japanese company would become the sixth-largest investor in Intel, according to LSEG data. SoftBank shares dropped more than 5 percent Tuesday following the announcement, while Intel surged 5.6 percent in after-market hours trading. The Japanese company will only take an equity stake in Intel and will neither seek a board seat nor commit to buying Intel's chips, the person familiar with the matter said. Intel has struggled financially and recorded an annual loss of $18.8 billion in 2024, its first such loss since 1986, as it grapples with multiple challenges. Its longtime rival AMD has been gaining share in Intel's mainstay personal computer and server semiconductor markets, while its ambitious and costly plan for a chip contracting business that rivals that of Taiwan's TSMC has failed to take off. The company is now considering a significant change to its contract chip manufacturing business to win major customers, Reuters reported last month, in a potentially expensive shift from its previous strategies. "Intel's dual role as designer and manufacturer/fabricator uniquely positions it as potentially the best platform in the US to compete with TSMC," said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo. Bloomberg News reported earlier Monday that the US government is in talks to take a 10 percent stake in Intel. SoftBank declined to provide more details on the Intel investment when asked to comment by Reuters. The Intel funding is the latest in the Japanese company's run of mammoth investment announcements in 2025, which include committing $30 billion to ChatGPT maker OpenAI as well as leading the financing for Stargate. On Monday Taiwan's Foxconn said it plans to manufacture data center equipment with SoftBank at the Taiwanese firm's former electric vehicle factory in Ohio as part of the Stargate project. (Reuters)
