The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for ground beef products sold at Whole Foods stores in over 25 states that tested positive for E. coli, the agency announced this week.
The product is no longer available in stores, so a recall wasn't issued. Instead, a public health alert was issued, the FSIS said.
The raw ground beef product was manufactured by Organic Rancher and was made on May 22, 2025, and May 23, 2025, according to FSIS.
The health alert includes 1 pound vacuum-packed containers of Organic Rancher Organic Ground Beef, labeled as 85% lean with 15% fat. The label includes expiration dates of June 19, 2025 and June 20, 2025.
According to the FSIS, the ground beef was shipped to distributor locations in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland, then sent to Whole Foods Market retail locations nationwide.
The company let the FSIS know that the product tested positive for E. coli, leading to the public health alert. While there have been no confirmed reports of illness, the FSIS said it is concerned some customers may still have the products in their freezers.

How do I know if I have the ground beef product?
In addition to the Organic Rancher Organic Ground Beef label listing 85% lean with 15% fat, the label also includes expiration dates June 19, 2025 and June 20, 2025.
The product has an establishment number "EST. 4027" inside the USDA mark of inspection, the FSIS said.
What should I do if I have the ground beef?
Those who have the products should not eat them, and should throw them out or return them to the store, the FSIS said.
According to the FSIS, those who eat meat should make sure the meat has been cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
'The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature,' the FSIS said.

Organic Rancher said on its website that the impacted products are no longer for sale.
'Other States not listed above are not impacted and products with different Use or Freeze By dates are NOT impacted and safe to consume,' the company said. The root cause of the issue has been identified, and immediate corrective actions have been put in place to ensure the ongoing integrity of the Organic Rancher brand.'

What issues can E. coli lead to?
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can lead to dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps for 2 to 8 days, or 3 to 4 days on average, the FSIS said.
Most people recover from E. coli exposure within a week, while others develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. The condition is most common in children who are under 5 years old, as well as older adults. Symptoms include easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine.

PG&E's Layers of Protection Are Working, Prevented a Major Wildfire in 2023 and 2024 SAN RAMON, Calif., June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to monitor wildfire conditions and deploying proven layers of wildfire protection to prevent wildfires, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) shared its readiness ahead of peak wildfire season. These layers of protection helped prevent a major wildfire in 2023 and 2024. Today, at PG&E's Applied Technology Services lab, the company's research and development facility, PG&E shared details about how the layers of protection are applied throughout PG&E's service area to prevent wildfires. PG&E was joined by representatives of XPRIZE Wildfire and two local teams – Ember Guard and Rain – who bring AI power and autonomous firefighting to the competition. PG&E is a proud sponsor of XPRIZE Wildfire and its work to build a pipeline of new technologies that support advanced wildfire mitigation, detection and response. Today's Wildfire Resilience from Layers of Protection Undergrounding Powerlines in high fire-risk areas to permanently eliminate ignition risk. 11 ICE Officers Are Stuck In A Shipping Container In Djibouti
A group of 11 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and eight migrant detainees are stuck in a shipping container in Djibouti after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from deporting immigrants to third-party countries without due process. The group's plight was described in a filing in U.S. District Court on Thursday, where Melissa Harper, a senior ICE official overseeing deportations, said they're currently being housed in a converted shipping container on the U.S. Naval base in Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. 'This has been identified as the only viable place to house the aliens,' said Harper. According to Harper, the daily temperature outside exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit. At night, Djibouti ignites burn pits near the base to dispose of trash and human waste, creating a lingering smog cloud. Upon their arrival, defense officials also warned the group 'of imminent danger of rocket attacks' from terrorist groups in nearby Yemen. Harper said members of the group have fallen ill and complained about a lack of medical equipment, including testing for what agents described as upper respiratory infections, all developed within 72 hours of landing. (The U.S. Department of Defense, which operates the base, might contest that description, having reportedly supplied the agents with Augmentin (an antibiotic), Azithromycin (another antibiotic), Doxycycline (a third antibiotic), Prednisone (steroid), inhalers, Zyrtec (treats allergies), Tylenol (pain and fever reliever), Motrin (pain reliever), Benadryl, Mucinex, Sudafed, nasal spray, and eye drops.) While showers are available to both the ICE agents and the migrants, Harper complained they're only available every other day. The three ICE officers originally assigned to the deportation flight were replaced on May 27 with an expanded team of 11 officers and two medical support staffers, who Harper said will also soon be swapped out for a fresh team. Which means the only members of the group consistently being subjected to the inhospitable conditions of Djibouti are the migrants. Trina Realmuto, an attorney for the deportees, told the Washington Post they're increasingly concerned about the conditions they're being held in, especially if they're being shackled. The detainees, who hail from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar and Vietnam, were quietly flown out of the country more than two weeks ago, violating the orders of a federal judge barring the government from deporting people to a third-party country — a nation other than the U.S. or their nation of origin — without first giving them a meaningful chance to contest it. Lawyers for the migrants said in court documents that they were given just hours before they were deported, instead of 15 days as directed by the judge. As a result, the flight, originally bound for South Sudan, instead got stuck in Djibouti. It's unclear if DHS attempted to deport the migrants to their countries of origin before settling on South Sudan. Federal law prohibits deporting migrants to countries that are unsafe or where they could be persecuted. It's also unclear why ICE would continue to subject the group to inhospitable conditions when they could simply return to the United States for the requisite hearings. The Department of Homeland Security didn't respond to a question to that effect. Instead, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughin lambasted the U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy on social media, accusing Murphy of 'putting the lives of our ICE law enforcement in danger by stranding them in Djibouti without proper resources, lack of medical care, and terrorists who hate Americans running rampant. Migrants and ICE officers contend with heat, smog and illness after detoured South Sudan flight
WASHINGTON (AP) — Migrants placed on a deportation flight originally bound for South Sudan are now being held in a converted shipping container on a U.S. naval base in Djibouti, where the men and their guards are contending with baking hot temperatures, smoke from nearby burn pits and the looming threat of rocket attacks, the Trump administration said. Officials outlined grim conditions in court documents filed Thursday before a federal judge overseeing a lawsuit challenging Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts to swiftly remove migrants to countries they didn't come from. Authorities landed the flight at the base in Djibouti, about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from South Sudan, more than two weeks ago after U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy in Boston found the Trump administration had violated his order by swiftly sending eight migrants from countries including Cuba and Vietnam to the east African nation. The judge said that men from other countries must have a real chance to raise fears about dangers they could face in South Sudan. The men's lawyers, though, have still not been able to talk to them, said Robyn Barnard, senior director of refugee advocacy at Human Rights First, whose stated mission is to ensure the United States is a global leader on human rights. Barnard spoke Friday at a hearing of Democratic members of Congress and said some family members of the men had been able to talk to them Thursday. The migrants have been previously convicted of serious crimes in the U.S., and President Donald Trump's administration has said that it was unable to return them quickly to their home countries. The Justice Department has also appealed to the Supreme Court to immediately intervene and allow swift deportations to third countries to resume. The case comes amid a sweeping immigration crackdown by the Republican administration, which has pledged to deport millions of people who are living in the United States illegally. The legal fight became another flashpoint as the administration rails against judges whose rulings have slowed the president's policies. The Trump administration said the converted conference room in the shipping container is the only viable place to house the men on the base in Djibouti, where outdoor daily temperatures rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), according to the declaration from an ICE official. Nearby burn pits are used to dispose of trash and human waste, and the smog cloud makes it hard to breathe, sickening both ICE officers guarding the men and the detainees, the documents state. They don't have access to all the medication they need to protect against infection, and the ICE officers were unable to complete anti-malarial treatment before landing, an ICE official said. 'It is unknown how long the medical supply will last,' Mellissa B. Harper, acting executive deputy associate director of enforcement and removal operations, said in the declaration.
