Nathan Jones believes he proved critics wrong leading Charlton to play-off final

Matty Godden's solitary, scrambled goal, nine minutes from the end of a cagey two-legged affair, fired the Addicks into an all-London Wembley final against Leyton Orient on May 25.
Jones, who was something of a derided figure as he lasted just three months in the Premier League at Southampton, collapsed to his knees in tears at the final whistle as jubilant fans streamed onto the pitch at a sold-out Valley.
It means Charlton are one win away from a return to the Championship, five years after they were relegated.
They have come a long way in just over a year having been 18th when Jones took over last February.
They eventually ended up 16th last season, their lowest league finish for 98 years.
'It's massive relief, euphoria and pride,' said Jones. 'I had times at a Premier League club where people thought I didn't deserve to be there, regardless of how much I'd earned the right and gone through the divisions and coached at the highest level.
'All those things you remember. There was a bit of emotion with that.
'The players were excellent under big pressure today. And the goal, who else would you want that to fall to? We had to keep going, keep believing.
'I'm demanding, relentless, difficult to work with but the players have responded and deserve all the credit. They've been magnificent.'
Godden struck when Lloyd Jones got his toe to a long ball into the box and hooked it into his path for a tap-in.
'It feels amazing,' said the striker. 'It was a bit of an out-of-body experience when the goal went in. It was so loud. The atmosphere was incredible and will live with me for the rest of my life.'
That Wycombe's last shot on target was in the 28th minute of the first leg said a lot about their attacking ambitions.
However, Addicks defender Kayne Ramsay did have to make an extraordinary double block to deny Garath McCleary and Xavier Simons shortly before Godden scored.
'There was a huge amount of emotion about the final outcome,' said boss Mike Dodds. 'It was two well-organised teams who cancelled each other out.
'I knew it would be decided by a moment, and I'm the one who didn't get that moment. I'm not going to point fingers at my team, they gave everything. It's a harsh lesson.
'But Nathan's done an incredible job and I wish them all the best.'

Arsenal reignite interest in Newcastle and Chelsea target as asking price slashe

Arsenal are showing an interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi again, as the defender heads into the final year of his contract. The 24-year-old was a target for the Gunners 12 months ago, along with a number of other clubs including Newcastle, Liverpool and his former team Chelsea. The Eagles stuck firm to their lofty asking price of £70m and no deal was done, with Guehi staying put and going on to win the FA Cup with Palace. However, the England international's contract at Selhurst Park expires next year so his price tag will be significantly lower this summer. The Mirror report that with Guehi now much more affordable than a year ago, Arsenal's interest has been reignited, although their pursuit of him will not be straightforward. Not only will there be plenty of competition again from their Premier League rivals, but the 23-cap England international may take some convincing to move to the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has established a very reliable partnership at centre-back in Gabriel and William Saliba, one that will not easily be broken. Gabriel signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal earlier this month and the club is working on Saliba doing the same. There is interest from Real Madrid in the Frenchman and the Gunners are very keen to keep hold of the impressive centre-back. That puts in question their interest in Guehi as he will not want to move to any club where he would not be a guaranteed starter. The Athletic report that Arteta wants genuine competition to his first-choice central defenders and Arsenal made a move for Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen before he made his £50m transfer to Real Madrid. Newcastle made three bids for Guehi last summer, going as high as £60m, but could not convince Palace to sell. With a return to the Champions League, the Magpies could come back with another offer as he is now likely available for less than they bid in 2024. Joined from Chelsea in July 2021 for £18m Appearances: 155 Goals: 8 Trophies: 2024/25 FA Cup Guehi has offered little on his future, saying before Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final: 'My only focus is this game. 'My only focus is the fact that I am under contract at Palace. So as far as I am concerned, I am a Palace player.' Last month The Sun reported that Guehi may choose to run down his contract at Crystal Palace and see his options expand further when he will be available on a free transfer next summer. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been touted as possible destinations for the defender if he were to leave Selhurst Park on a free. MORE: When does the transfer window reopen and why has it closed? Belgium will be ‘shaking in boots' ahead of Wales game in Cardiff

Belgium inflicted Craig Bellamy's first defeat as Wales head coach with an extraordinary 4-3 World Cup qualifying victory in Brussels on Monday. The Red Devils, ranked eighth in the world, let slip a three-goal lead before Kevin De Bruyne spared home blushes with an 88th-minute winner. The return fixture is in Cardiff on October 13 and new Stoke signing Thomas said of Belgium: 'That's a team that is top 10. People will say 'little old Wales' but we took the game to them. 'They're going to be shaking in their boots when they come to Cardiff to play us. We're hungry, we're a young group. 'I felt when it went to 3-3 it was in our hands. But it's a devastating game, football is a horrible sport sometimes. (Against) top 10 in the world and we feel we should have walked away with a win.' Wales seemed to be heading for a humiliating night when Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku struck inside the opening 27 minutes. There was a party atmosphere inside the King Baudouin Stadium as home supporters began a Mexican wave. Thomas said: 'Them behaving like that put it down to the pitch. The players got relaxed and we punished that. 'They might have been doing the Mexican wave but they weren't doing it when it went to 3-3. 'They're entitled to do what they want, but we deal with what's on the pitch. The whole game shifted. 'We're a young team and we're going places. That's one loss in 10. We'll learn from this and get better and better.' After Harry Wilson converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time, winger Thomas scored his first Wales goal and then set up Brennan Johnson's equaliser to cap a memorable week. The 26-year-old also started Friday's 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein and the following day left Huddersfield to join Stoke on a three-year deal. Sorba is a Stokie 🔴⚪ — Stoke City FC (@stokecity) June 7, 2025 'Personally it's been one heck of a week,' said Thomas, who has spent the season on loan at Ligue 1 club Nantes. 'I've secured my future and got my first Wales goal. I hope my family all watching at home were proud. 'I've loved my time at Huddersfield. They took me from non-league and made my dreams reality to play for Wales and put me in this moment. 'To get it (the move) done early was important because I can focus on my football. 'I want to play well in the Championship every week next season and give the manager a headache to keep putting me in the team.'
