Over RM260 Mln For Seven Energy Projects To Benefit 60,000 In Sabah, Labuan

KOTA KINABALU, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has allocated over RM260 million for seven energy projects across Sabah and Labuan, aimed at improving electricity supply for 60,434 users, said Deputy Prime Minister and PETRA Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the projects, implemented by the Sabah Electricity Supply Special Project Team (PPKBES), involve substation upgrades, expanded grid connectivity and improved safety monitoring systems in Sipitang, Beaufort, Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Sandakan and Labuan. 'These initiatives have strengthened transmission and distribution infrastructure in Sabah and Labuan, ensuring a more reliable power supply, reflecting the federal government's commitment to energy resilience in line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the handover of the projects at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU) today. Also present were PETRA Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and PETRA secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli. Fadillah said the PMU KKBU project includes a new gas-insulated switchgear and transformer facility to replace outdated systems, along with new cabling to enhance electricity supply to Kota Kinabalu International Airport. He also highlighted the completion of a seven-kilometre transmission line from the Menggalong PMU to the Sipitang-Lawas border, one of PPKBES' high-impact projects, which was completed on Sept 2 last year. The line will allow the import of 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Sarawak once Sarawak Energy completes its section in September. 'This grid is designed to carry up to 500 MW and is a key component of the ASEAN Power Grid, connecting Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and the Philippines for sustainable cross-border energy sharing,' he noted. -- BERNAMA

ASEAN Energy Grid Targeted By 2045

ASEAN foreign ministers have set an ambitious target to realise the ASEAN Power Grid by 2045, reinforcing their shared vision for a more connected, secure and low-carbon energy future across Southeast Asia. In a Joint Communique issued after the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM), the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to boosting regional energy interconnectivity, including accelerating the development of the power grid, the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline, the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) efforts. The ministers welcomed plans to sign an enhanced memorandum of understanding on the ASEAN Power Grid and endorse a new framework for subsea power cable development within the year. The statement also highlighted progress made on the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project and acknowledged ongoing talks on the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines integration project. The 58th AMM and related meetings, hosted under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, concluded on July 11 with renewed focus on regional energy security and sustainability. Global Markets Dip As Trump's Tariff Threats Rattle Investors

Global markets edged lower on July 14 as renewed US tariff threats from President Donald Trump unsettled investor sentiment, just as earnings season kicks off and key economic data looms. Reuters reported that Wall Street and European futures slipped in Asian trading after Trump announced plans to impose 30% tariffs on most imports from the European Union (EU) and Mexico starting Aug 1, escalating trade tensions. While the EU vowed to seek a negotiated settlement, Germany's finance minister called for retaliation if tariffs proceed. Despite the tough talk, market reaction remained measured. The MSCI Asia-Pacific Index (ex-Japan) dipped 0.1%, while Japan's Nikkei was flat. Chinese blue chips rose 0.2%, buoyed by stronger-than-expected export growth of 5.8% in June, even as exports to the US declined nearly 10%. In Europe, EUROSTOXX 50 futures fell 0.6%, DAX futures dropped 0.7% and FTSE futures held steady. In the US, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures each eased 0.4%, ahead of a busy earnings week led by major banks. Corporate profits for S&P 500 firms are now expected to grow 5.8% year-over-year, down from April's 10.2% forecast. Investors are bracing for a volatile week, balancing geopolitical risks with a flood of corporate earnings and crucial US economic data, including June inflation and retail sales figures. Related
