Israel Seeks US Support to Expel Palestinians out of Gaza: Report

Leaders19-07-2025
Israel is actively seeking US assistance to convince third countries to accept large numbers of Palestinians from Gaza, according to a report by Axios citing two informed sources. Mossad Director David Barnea visited Washington this week specifically to push this agenda.
During a meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff, Barnea named Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Libya as nations potentially open to receiving Palestinians. He urged the US government to offer these countries incentives and actively support Israel's relocation efforts. Crucially, Barnea sought help from the Trump administration to advance this highly sensitive initiative.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet insist any movement would be strictly voluntary, with no forced expulsions. However, this plan faces fierce international criticism and significant legal challenges, as several Israeli and American legal experts have explicitly labeled the proposed mass transfer a potential war crime. Linking Back to Trump's 'Riviera' Vision
This request directly connects to President Donald Trump's controversial February suggestion. Trump proposed the US temporarily take control of Gaza and relocate its two million residents during reconstruction. While Netanyahu supported the concept, it drew immediate pushback from Arab and Western allies.
Subsequently, the Trump administration reportedly told Israel it must find willing host countries itself if it pursued the plan. Netanyahu then tasked Mossad with this mission. Both leaders previously discussed transforming Gaza into a 'Riviera of the Middle East' by transferring Palestinians out, sparking widespread condemnation and accusations of ethnic cleansing. However, it remains unclear if the US will now support Barnea's request.

National Guard troops appear in Washington DC as mayor rejects 'authoritarian push'

WASHINGTON — US National Guard troops have begun appearing on the streets of Washington DC, a day after President Donald Trump deployed the troops to the city and took control of its police force as he argued violent crime was out of control. Armoured vehicles were spotted at urban centres and tourist sites around the US capital on Tuesday evening. Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, who has denied crime is out of control in her city, described the troop deployment as an "authoritarian push". Fresh protest against Gaza war erupts in Greece over arrival of Israeli cruise ship

ATHENS — Fresh demonstrations against Israel's military offensive in Gaza erupted in Greece on Wednesday, with protesters clashing with police as an Israeli cruise ship docked in the port city of Volos. There have been several protests at various Greek ports in recent weeks against the Crown Iris cruise ship, which is operated by Israeli shipping giant Mano Maritime and is currently touring around Greece. Local communities unfurled huge Palestinian flags and chanted pro-Palestine slogans as Israeli tourists disembarked from the cruise ship. In the coastal city of Volos, located some 330 kilometres north of Athens, demonstrators protesting the arrival of the Crown Iris were dispersed by riot police using stun grenades. The Israeli tourists were still able to disembark the ship and board buses for tours of nearby Mount Pilio and the Meteora monastery complex in Thessaly, local media reported. Meanwhile, the protesters left the port and continued their pro-Palestine march through the main streets of the city. Last month, the Crown Iris left the Greek island of Syros early without its passengers disembarking after more than 150 protesters demonstrated at the island's port."It is unacceptable that tourists from Israel continue to be welcomed here while the Palestinians are suffering in the [Gaza] Strip," the protesters said on social some Greeks have denounced the protests, including the country's Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis."We owe an apology to these friends of Greece who chose to spend their holidays here and were forcibly denied it by some," he wrote on X last month following the incident in Syros. Russia calls European diplomacy over Ukraine ‘insignificant'

Russia branded as 'insignificant' European diplomatic consultations with Ukraine on Wednesday ahead of a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. 'We consider the consultations sought by the Europeans to be politically and practically insignificant,' Russian foreign ministry deputy spokesman Alexey Fadeev said in a briefing. 'The Europeans verbally support the diplomatic efforts of Washington and Moscow to resolve the crisis around Ukraine, but in fact the European Union is sabotaging them,' he said. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders were to hold urgent talks with Trump on Wednesday, hoping to convince him to respect Kyiv's interests in his looming summit with Putin on Friday. The summit is so far planned to go ahead without Zelenskyy. This has fueled fears Kyiv could be forced into painful concessions, notably over land. Zelenskyy has called for a full ceasefire -- a proposal which Russia has rejected. Ahead of the conference call, Zelenskyy, who has spoken with more than 30 international leaders in the last few days, said 'pressure must be exerted on Russia for the sake of a fair peace.' EU leaders stressed on Tuesday 'the inherent right of Ukraine to choose its own destiny' and that 'international borders must not be changed by force.' But Fadeev on Wednesday said the EU rhetoric 'about supposed support for finding peaceful solutions is just another attempt to stall the settlement process.' 'We will monitor the actions of European countries in connection with the upcoming summit and hope that no steps will be taken that would prevent it from taking place and reaching constructive agreements,' he said.
