While new stadium takes shape, Northwestern looks to re-establish winning foundation

NBC Sports6 hours ago
EVANSTON, Ill. — The steel frame for Northwestern's new home stands out as a beacon of promise on the site of the old stadium. The sections filled in by concrete are more signs of progress.
A little more than a year after the school broke ground on a new Ryan Field, the framework for something special appears to be in place.
'It truly will be the best football venue in the country,' coach David Braun said. 'It won't affect us in 2025. It's certainly affecting our recruiting in a positive manner. But so much to look forward to in 2026.'
As for what Northwestern has to look forward to this year?
The Wildcats come into Braun's third season looking to bounce back after going from winning eight games in 2023 to finishing 4-8 last year and near the bottom of the Big Ten with a 2-7 mark. Only Maryland and Purdue had worse records in league play.
Northwestern has a new quarterback in SMU transfer Preston Stone and one more season playing in a temporary lakefront stadium before moving into what figures to be a sparkling new home.
New QB
Northwestern struggled at quarterback the past few seasons. The Wildcats hope Stone can change that.
Things didn't go the way Stone would have liked last year, when he started the first three games before Kevin Jennings took over. The Mustangs advanced to the College Football Playoff.
But in 2023, Stone started the first 12 games, throwing for 3,197 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions before breaking a leg in the regular-season finale. SMU went on to win the AAC championship.
Jack Lausch, who started the final 10 games for Northwestern last season, informed Braun in June that he was leaving the team to focus on baseball.
Keep an eye on
Left tackle Caleb Tiernan earned an 88.9 pass blocking grade from Pro Football Focus last season that ranked sixth among all tackles. He gave up just one sack over the final six games.
Run it
Northwestern's running backs combined for 910 yards rushing a year ago, with Cam Porter, Joseph Himon II and Caleb Komolafe accounting for 897 of them. All three are back.
Porter led the team with 501 yards and Himon was second with 257, but the Wildcats will need to get more from their run game. They were 17th in the Big Ten in rushing at 98.5 yards per game.
Lakefront living
Northwestern will play five of its seven home games in one of college football's most unique settings, plus two more at Wrigley Field against No. 14 Michigan and Minnesota.
The Wildcats were 2-3 on campus last season and lost both conference games, to Indiana and Wisconsin. But with its location along the lake and views of the Chicago skyline, the pop-up stadium was a stunner. Wisconsin's strength coach even made good on a promise and took the plunge after the Badgers' victory. The place is getting a bit of an upgrade this year, with more premium seating and improved audio and video.
The schedule
Though the Wildcats miss defending national champion Ohio State, the schedule is hardly a breeze.
Northwestern opens against a potential playoff team when it visits Tulane on Aug. 30, and No. 7 Oregon, the defending Big Ten champion, visits on Sept. 13. The games against Michigan and Minnesota at Wrigley Field are on Nov. 15 and 22. The Wildcats also have some difficult road games, with trips to No. 2 Penn State on Oct. 11, USC on Nov. 7 and No. 12 Illinois on Nov. 29.
Northwestern's home opener is against Western Illinois on Sept. 5.

Pick Six: Boise State primed to make another run at Group of Five's auto bid for CFP

Losing a Heisman Trophy finalist, the best defensive player on the team and other key personnel would tamp down expectations for a lot of programs even in this era of quick fixes through the transfer portal. Not Boise State, which brings back more than enough talent to be deemed the favorite to earn the Group of Five's guaranteed College Football Playoff bid a second straight year. Boise State has a second-year starter in quarterback Maddux Madsen, who threw for more than 3,000 yards with 23 touchdowns, and a deep offensive line returning 10 players who started a game. One of Madsen's favorite targets will be Matt Lauter, an All-Mountain West Conference pick whose 47 receptions set a school record for tight ends. The departure of Ashton Jeanty, the Heisman runner-up, creates opportunities for promising running backs Dylan Riley and Sire Gaines. There's a hole on the defensive line without Ahmed Hassanein, the MWC's top defensive draft pick as a sixth-rounder. Edge rusher Jayden Virgin-Morgan and linebacker Marco Notarainni, both All-MWC picks, are back. So are cornerbacks A'Marion McCoy and Jeremiah Earby. The Broncos' early schedule is intriguing: The opener at South Florida is followed by a mid-September trip to Air Force to start Mountain West play. There also is a road game against No. 6 Notre Dame. This is the second year the highest-ranked G5 conference champion will be assured a spot in the playoff. In addition to the Mountain West, the G5s are the American, Conference USA, Mid-American and Sun Belt. Tulane The Green Wave are looking for their fourth straight American Conference championship game appearance, and their 32 wins over the last three seasons are fourth-most nationally. Jon Sumrall brought in 34 transfers after getting dinged hard in the portal. Transfers Jake Retzlaff (BYU) and Brendan Sullivan (Iowa) are battling at QB, and the running back and receiver rooms are full of new faces. The offensive line is perhaps the best in the league, and the defense has quality players at all three levels. The schedule, with a home game against Duke and a trip to Mississippi, is second-toughest among G5 teams. Memphis The Tigers are extremely tough at home, and that's where they play key American games against South Florida, Tulane and Navy and a nonconference game against Arkansas. Nevada transfer Brendon Lewis takes over for four-year starter Seth Henigan at quarterback. As many as nine transfers could start on defense. Returning all-conference D-lineman William Whitlow Jr. is a menace. James Madison The Sun Belt Conference is a crapshoot, but James Madison gets the nod. Coach Bob Chesney was deciding between returning QB Alonza Barnett III, who is coming back from an ACL tear, and UNLV transfer Matt Sluka. Barnett set a school record with seven touchdowns in a 70-50 win over North Carolina and threw just four interceptions over 12 games. The Dukes also have the Sun Belt's top defense. JMU's biggest games are on the road — Louisville and Liberty in nonconference and Texas State, Marshall and Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt. Toledo Jason Candle, who has never had a losing record in nine-plus seasons as Rockets coach, could have his best team. He retained his best players, added key transfers and the schedule is one of his most manageable in years. The Rockets play four of last year's five bottom teams in the Mid-American Conference and avoid defending champion Ohio in the regular season. Key newcomers are RBs Chip Trayanum (Arizona State, Ohio State and Kentucky) and Trayvon Rudolph (Northern Illinois). They should help bring life to a lethargic rushing game and take pressure off returning QB Tucker Gleason. Liberty Coastal Carolina transfer Ethan Vasko takes over at quarterback following Kaidon Salter's departure for Colorado. Question marks remain at several spots, but the Flames' schedule is one of the easiest among Group of Five teams and they should be back in the Conference USA championship game after faltering late last season. The Flames, who joined the FBS seven years ago, have won at least eight games six straight seasons.

Allar named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list

Even in the preseason, Penn State and its players have been receiving hype and accolades left and right. And no one player has received as much hype as senior QB Drew Allar. Going into his final year at Happy Valley, Allar is set for a career-defining season that could see his draft stock rise exponentially. Witn him being tabbed with many different quarterback watch list honors, the media certainly expect nothing less. The newest addition to Drew Allar's preseason resume may not be the most prestigious, but it is another feather in his cap. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award has been around for almost 40 years, and in that time, has honored countless young college football athletes who are strong leaders, good of character, and are academically sound as well. Allar displays all these traits and more. Should he live up to the preseason buzz, he may just walk away with it. This is not the only award Allar could be up for this season. He has been nominated for awards that also have more to do with his on-field success as well. He has already been named to the Davey O'Brien, Manning, Maxwell and Walter Camp Player of the year award watch lists, a year after being named a Davey O'Brien semifinalist. While not named to any specific preseason All-American lists, he will be looking to get into a postseason squad after being named an All-Big Ten honorable mention in the two years he has started. Ultimately, any awards Allar wins will come down to his pedigree and overall play. He is already the most efficient Penn State quarterback, ranking first in completion percentage all time. However, his performance both on and off the field will have to be particularly stellar to contend for the Golden Arm. Allar can't just be extraordinary. He must be exemplary. With this team by his side, he certainly will have the chance to be.

Latest Kenny Pickett Development Good News for Browns' Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Now that the Cleveland Browns have named Joe Flacco as their Week 1 starter—news that came as a surprise to almost no one—the next big question the team needs to answer is who is his No. 2 backup? Both Browns depth charts this preseason have listed Flacco at the top followed by Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders, respectively, but it seems unlikely the team will head into the regular season with that same order given Pickett's lack of playing time. More NFL: Adam Schefter Drops Major Hint on Shedeur Sanders' Browns Future Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Wednesday that Pickett, who's missed most of training camp and all of the preseason with a hamstring injury, won't play in Cleveland's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, meaning there's at least a chance either Gabriel or Sanders could pass him on the depth chart to start the season. "[Pickett is] continuing to progress," Stefanski said, via ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "He's doing everything in his power to get back out there ASAP. ... He's fine. A lot of this is just getting some guys ready who are playing on Saturday. Kenny's not playing Saturday so just getting more walkthrough-type reps." MoreMore NFL: Insider Believes Blockbuster Trade Could Be in the Works for the Patriots Though Pickett has the experience edge on both rookies, both Gabriel and Sanders have actually taken more reps, and thus have more familiarity with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees' offensive system. Pickett has attempted 56 passes in camp, according to ESPN Cleveland (he's completed 42 of them), while Gabriel has thrown three times as many passes (160), and Sanders has nearly double (100) — plus Gabriel attempted 18 passes on 38 offensive snaps and Sanders attempted 23 passes on 47 offensive snaps in the preseason, per Pro Football Focus. More NFL: Rams Linked to Rising Dual-Threat QB as Matthew Stafford Insurance Though Gabriel seems to be ahead of Sanders so far, if the Colorado alum plays in the preseason finale and puts forth a strong showing, it could be his chance to get as high as second on the depth chart. "[Sanders is] doing more, and then the (next) part is just to find out how he comes out of today, how he felt," Stefanski stated, via Oyefusi. "We'll know more both after practice and then know more tomorrow morning. "[He's] still limited," Stefanski added. "Still had a number of throws we wanted him to get and then evaluate him."
