Now that the Cleveland Browns have named Joe Flacco as their Week 1 starter—news that came as a surprise to almost no one—the next big question the team needs to answer is who is his No. 2 backup?

Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Wednesday that Pickett, who's missed most of training camp and all of the preseason with a hamstring injury, won't play in Cleveland's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, meaning there's at least a chance either Gabriel or Sanders could pass him on the depth chart to start the season.
"[Pickett is] continuing to progress," Stefanski said, via ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "He's doing everything in his power to get back out there ASAP. ... He's fine. A lot of this is just getting some guys ready who are playing on Saturday. Kenny's not playing Saturday so just getting more walkthrough-type reps."

Though Pickett has the experience edge on both rookies, both Gabriel and Sanders have actually taken more reps, and thus have more familiarity with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees' offensive system.
Pickett has attempted 56 passes in camp, according to ESPN Cleveland (he's completed 42 of them), while Gabriel has thrown three times as many passes (160), and Sanders has nearly double (100) — plus Gabriel attempted 18 passes on 38 offensive snaps and Sanders attempted 23 passes on 47 offensive snaps in the preseason, per Pro Football Focus.

Though Gabriel seems to be ahead of Sanders so far, if the Colorado alum plays in the preseason finale and puts forth a strong showing, it could be his chance to get as high as second on the depth chart.
"[Sanders is] doing more, and then the (next) part is just to find out how he comes out of today, how he felt," Stefanski stated, via Oyefusi. "We'll know more both after practice and then know more tomorrow morning.
"[He's] still limited," Stefanski added. "Still had a number of throws we wanted him to get and then evaluate him."

Minnesota Vikings trade Harrison Phillips to Jets for sixth-round draft picks, AP source says
The New York Jets agreed to terms on a deal to acquire veteran nose tackle Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press. The Jets are sending sixth-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027 to the Vikings, who are trading a 2027 seventh-rounder along with Phillips — pending the 29-year-old D-lineman's physical — according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams didn't announce the deal. ESPN and NFL Network first reported the trade, which came a few hours after New York made another addition to its defensive line when it acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs and a seventh-rounder next year from Cleveland for a sixth-rounder. According to multiple reports, the Vikings also agreed to pay $3.7 million of Phillips' $7.4 million salary due this season. Phillips played the past three seasons for the Vikings after spending his first four with Buffalo. He was a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2018. Phillips has eight career sacks, five fumble recoveries and is regarded as a top run stuffer. The 6-foot-3, 307-pound Phillips started every game during his tenure with Minnesota, with 6 1/2 of his sacks and 17 quarterback hits during that time. He signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Vikings in 2022 and then was signed to a two-year extension in September. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season after being a seventh-round selection. The 6-1, 313-pound D-lineman had 12 career sacks and 170 tackles during a college career that began at Virginia (2019-20) and finished with three years at Cincinnati (2021-23) — where he was teammates with current Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner for one season. Phillips and Briggs join a D-line that's led by three-time Pro Bowl pick Quinnen Williams and includes Micheal Clemons, Jay Tufele, Will McDonald and Rashad Weaver. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart has missed time in training camp with an ankle injury, so the additions of Phillips and Briggs could help fill that void for the Jets if Cowart is sidelined for an extended time. Before the trades Wednesday, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks praised his line and was excited about its potential. "I preach all the time to the defense, everything that we do starts up front," Wilks said. "Those guys are going to be the cowbells of this defense and really try to spark and get us going."

Tiger Woods to lead new Future Competition Committee, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announces
ATLANTA – Brian Rolapp's first announcement as CEO of the PGA Tour was predictably bold, with the former NFL executive announcing Wednesday at the Tour Championship the creation of a Future Competition Committee. Rolapp said the committee's goal is a 'holistic relook of how we compete on the Tour,' and will focus on both the regular season, playoffs and off-season. The nine-member committee will include six players and will be chaired by Tiger Woods, who also serves on the policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board. He will be joined by Joe Gorder, the chairman of both boards; John Henry, the manager of Strategic Sports Group; and Theo Epstein, the former MLB executive who is an advisor for Fenway Sports Group. 'We're going to focus on the evolution of our competitive model and the corresponding media products and sponsorship elements and model of the entire sport,' Rolapp said. 'The goal is not incremental change. The goal is significant change.' The committee will focus on three areas of the Tour's competition model including parity, scarcity and simplicity, which is noteworthy given the circuit's ongoing struggle to create a compelling postseason model despite nearly two decades of trial and error. In May, the Tour announced it was eliminating the starting-strokes format at the Tour Championship, which essentially handicapped the field heading into the finale based on the post-season points list. Last year, for example, the points leader, Scottie Scheffler, started the week at 10 under followed by No. 2 on the points list at 8 under. This year's Tour Championship is using the traditional 72 holes of stroke play with each player starting at even par, including points front-runner Scheffler. 'I guess no more sandbagging for me at the end of the year,' Scheffler laughed. 'I was not a fan of it. I didn't think it was a good way to end the year, for a variety of reasons. I'm much more happy with this format. Having a good golf tournament on a really good golf course to finish off our season is extremely important, and I think when you look at it this week, we're going to have a difficult test, a good test to golf to finish off the year the right way.' The move to create an all-encompassing committee for a possible overhaul of the competitive model is on-brand for Rolapp, who pointed out that in his former job at the NFL, innovation and change were part of the culture. '[At the NFL] we did not sit still, changed rules every March. We changed the kickoff rule. That's what I mean by honoring tradition but not being bound by it. That level of innovation is what we're going to do here, and I think that's one lesson I've learned,' Rolapp said. 'I will say in talking with all the stakeholders, everyone seems excited about that, and I think realizes that given the strong foundation we have, if we apply some of that, we think we can make it better.' Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Camilo Villegas – who are all policy board members – along with Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell – who are co-chairs of the Player Advisory Council and will ascend to the policy board next year – will join Woods on the new committee.

Report says bullet was fired into Chiefs coach Andy Reid's office last spring while he was there
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A bullet was fired into Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid's office at the team's practice facility last spring while he was inside, the Kansas City Star reported Wednesday. The Star, citing multiple sources, reported Reid was working alone in his office in early May 2024 when a bullet fired from outside the building broke through glass and left a hole through the window and blinds. It got lodged in a wall between his bathroom and the entry door to his office. The team installed bulletproof glass soon afterward. The Star reported two more bullets hit the facility, with one striking the third floor and another an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Few people people in the organization knew about the incident. A Chiefs spokesman declined comment to the AP on Wednesday night. The incident occurred just months after Reid led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl championship repeat and their third title in a five-year span. They won the AFC again last season, only to lose to Philadelphia. Reid has a 273-146-1 record in 12 seasons with the Chiefs and 14 with the Eagles.
