Telemundo Sets 'Velvet El Nuevo Imperio' Premiere Target
Telemundo's remake of the Spanish hit series Velvet has picked up its new official title, added several high-profile cast members, and zeroed in on when it will make its premiere.
Now titled Velvet El Nuevo Imperio, production began in late February, with Spain's Yon González (Las Chicas del Cable, Memento Mori) and Mexico's Samantha Siqueiros (Casa de Papel: Berlin, Señora Acero) starring as star-crossed lovers Alberto Márquez and Ana Velázquez, trying to make their mark in the high-stakes world of fashion. Miguel Ángel Silvestre (Sky Rojo, Sense8) and Paula Echevarría (Gran Reserva, Velvet Colección) portrayed these roles in the original series.
Coming on board the ensemble cast are legendary Mexican actor and producer Humberto Zurita (La Reina del Sur) as patriarch Benjamín Márquez, and Carolina Miranda (Fake Profile, ¿Quién mató a Sara?) as Cristina Otegui, a charming yet manipulative antagonist. Chantal Andere (El maleficio, El Conde: Amor y honor) plays Blanca Morales, a resilient woman who rises from humble seamstress to head of the atelier at Velvet. Danilo Carrera takes on the role of male antagonist Carlos Aristizábal, while Itatí Cantoral portrays Isabel Juárez. Marking her return to a Telemundo production is Sonya Smith as Pilar Márquez, her first role with the network since Falsa Identidad in 2018.
Telemundo released its first video teaser for the series ahead of its planned May premiere.
The original Velvet, created by Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira and produced by Bambú Producciones for Atresmedia Televisión, aired from 2014 to 2016 and was set in a 1950s Spanish fashion house. Telemundo's adaptation reimagines the story in modern-day New York.
Directed by Danny Gavidia, Miguel Varoni, and Ricardo Schwarz, and adapted by Sandra Velasco, Velvet El Nuevo Imperio is being filmed at Telemundo Center's state-of-the-art facilities in Miami.

Lili Estefan pushes back after Cuban press questions her daughter's Miss Cuba win
Univision personality Lili Estefan took a moment on her show 'El Gordo y La Flaca' to respond to the attacks from the official Cuban press against her daughter, Lina Luaces, the winner of Miss Universe Cuba 2025. In an opinion piece titled 'Who Defines 'Being Cuba' in Miss Universe?,' the state-run outlet Cubadebate questioned Luaces' legitimacy as a candidate to represent Cuba considering she'd never been to the island and wasn't a fluent Spanish speaker. It further questioned if it was fair for someone unfamiliar with the daily life in a country to represent it on the world's stage. The op-ed also called Miss Universe "an industry that profits from show, entertainment and beauty from a superficial viewpoint" that "objectifies" women. On her show, Estefan and co-host, Raul de Molina, pointed out that six decades ago Cuba stopped participating in beauty pageants, which prevented generations of young women from the island from competing on the international stage. Estefan highlighted the damage caused by Fidel Castro's decision —which Miguel Díaz-Canel's government has not reversed— and its impact on young Cuban women who want to participate in beauty contests. "They have directly interfered with girls' dreams' by not allowing them to participate in Miss Universe, Estefan said Friday on the show. "When the Miss Universe organization decided to create a Miss Universe Cuba in exile, to give these girls, who have never had the opportunity to represent their country, the chance to do so —even if it's their parents' country, as those are the Miss Universe requirements—they also face strong criticism,' Estefan said. In March 2024, the Miss Universe organization granted Venezuelan designer and beauty pageant expert Prince Julio César the rights to Miss Universe Cuba. Luaces, a 22-year-old model and influencer born in Miami, was chosen on July 8 in Hialeah to compete in Miss Universe in Thailand as Miss Universe Cuba. Estefan, who hadn't commented earlier because she was away, said that what matters is that Cuban women 'have found something that can represent today's woman, the working woman, the empowered woman who dreams and wants to be part of this great organization.' 'Lina is representing her parents' country, a country that does not give women opportunities,' said Estefan, pointing out that the article didn't mention that Cuba is in the midst of one of the worst economic crises in its history and that women on the island are some of the most affected. Estefan acknowledged the controversy her daughter's win caused, with critics pointing out Luaces' Spanish language skills and her family's influence. Luaces represented Santiago de Cuba at the Miss Universe Cuba pageant, the city where her mother and uncle, music producer and entrepreneur Emilio Estefan, were born. 'I think, obviously, we all know, because we have all lived it publicly, the controversy caused by Lina, my daughter, who was born here in the United States, going out to represent Cuba this year,' Estefan said. But Luaces herself had already addressed the criticism. "I know everyone will have their opinion, but I believe in myself," Luaces said the night she was crowned Miss Universe Cuba, pointing out how that she did the work of preparing for the pageant, mentally and physically, on her own. 'I can't control where I come from, but I can control what I'm going to do with it,' Luaces said to critics. While the debate about whether she is the ideal person to represent Cuban women continues, Luaces has been busy. She has been seen attending events like the premiere of the film 'Freakier Friday' in Miami, and was chosen among People en Español's 50 most beautiful people.

Watch HBO Max's New 100% Rotten Tomatoes Show For Free Here
If you're looking for something different, way different, to watch this week, you might want to flip on HBO Max to witness something highly unusual. That would be the new show Women Wearing Shoulder Pads, which currently has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Women Wearing Shoulder Pads may sound like some sort of period piece about women in the workplace. Instead, it's a stop-motion puppet comedy on Adult Swim. It's the first Spanish-language on the service and it's well, just watch the trailer: Actually, forget that, watch the first episode, which HBO Max has made free on YouTube in order to get viewers hooked: If you can't spend those 12 minutes to watch it yet, the synopsis is as follows: The vibe is very Robot Chicken, albeit as a full series, not a clip show. The series is from Gonzalo Cordova, who most notably was a writer on 14 episodes of Tuca and Bertie, the famously cancelled Netflix series that was eventually picked up by Adult Swim. After two more seasons it was cancelled on Adult Swim as well, but at least managed three in total. Now, Cordova is on Women Wearing Shoulder Pads here. Here's Cordova speaking to Indiewire about his project: 'I grew up hearing all these family stories about Ecuador, and about things that happened in my family, and they were all so melodramatic and over the top and exaggerated,' Cordova said. 'For me, it had a connection to his world, to the way his films in the '80s are very colorful and over the top. And I wanted to see if I could put pluck a character from his world, and kind of put it in that world and see what would happen.' He goes on to say that production is challenging, given that there are 60 miniatures with multiple costume changes to manage in stop-motion, which is obviously an art form we do not see all that often these days. And this one is more complicated than most, said Roy Ambriz, an animator: 'Usually when you see stop-motion productions, there is one set with two characters and with the same clothing. But for this production, we needed to create a lot of different sets,' Roy Ambriz told IndieWire. 'Some sets were used only for one shot or for one scene, but that creates and helps the melodrama. They're real people working, but they are miniatures, they are toys.' Women Wearing Shoulder Pads is a fascinating series and will air first on Adult Swim, then on HBO Max the next day. Right now, just two have been released. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Lamine Yamal and Neymar, Barça has made its decision!
Lamine Yamal and Neymar At FC Barcelona, a decision has been made regarding Lamine Yamal—especially concerning his friendship with Neymar. During his summer holidays, Lamine Yamal made headlines not only for rumored relationships with influencers and singers, but above all for the extravagant party he threw for his 18th birthday. The celebration sparked controversy, particularly because the player hired a troupe of little people to entertain guests. But that's not all. According to El Nacional, photos of Lamine Yamal with Neymar raised eyebrows at Barça. The Spanish outlet reports that the Catalan club was not happy to see their young star spending part of his vacation with Neymar. The reason: Barça does not want their number 10 to follow in the footsteps of the Brazilian, who has often been criticized for his questionable lifestyle choices. In short, the club no longer wants to see the two enjoying time together. The Blaugrana have therefore decided to take action. They want their player to lead a quieter life and be recognized primarily for his performances on the pitch—not for parties or late-night outings. Everyone at the club, including Flick and his teammates, is eager to protect the 18-year-old prodigy by giving him advice and guidance.
