UK tourists in Majorca issued chilling 'warning' which 'cannot wait any longer'
British holidaymakers have been hit with a stern warning as anti-tourist sentiment surges in the Balearic Islands, particularly affecting Majorca. The island has seen an upsurge in protests against tourism, with a stark message being broadcasted to UK visitors.
In Majorca, the Arran Mallorca movement, part of the youth wing of the pro-Catalan independence Arran Jovent, has released a video that delivers a direct message: "With tourism, locals are losing out. Young people: get organised."
Affiliated with a leftist Catalan independence party, the Arran movement is calling for action, stating: "It is no longer enough to just talk about limiting population while the Majorcan society continues to grow, it needs to decrease now and we cannot wait any longer."
They also expressed their dissatisfaction with the commercialisation of their home, saying, "We are not proud that our island has been sold to Escarrer, Barcelo or Fluxa," referencing prominent hoteliers Gabriel Escarrer, Simón Pedro Barceló, and Miguel Fluxà.
With mounting frustration, the group declared: "We are fed up and ready to face it! The political class is responsible for our misery. They have put economic interests above our lives and have given Majorca away to private capital. With tourism, local are losing out. Young people: get organised," reports Birmingham Live.
On X, which has taken over from Twitter, Arran Mallorca captioned their campaign video with a decisive call to action: "We demand change, we demand decrease!" They added further criticism: "We young women are being pushed into poverty while hoteliers are making a fortune thanks to the political class.
"We are fed up with our land being commercialised, while the working class is always the one who suffers the most."
Spain, which holds the title of the world's second-most favoured tourist hotspot after France, has clocked a record-breaking 21.8 million international visitors last summer, eclipsing previous tallies and coinciding with widespread anti-tourism demonstrations.
This spike represents a 7.3% uptick on 2023 figures, as reported by the national statistics body INE.
In the peak month of July alone, Spain played host to an astonishing 10.9 million tourists, a number matched by August's influx, underlining the magnitude of tourism drawn by this Iberian nation, INE detailed.

Exclusive: Ex-Tory MP defects to Reform
Reform UK has today unveiled its latest defector. Adam Holloway served as the Conservative MP for Gravesham in Kent from 2005 until 2024. A former soldier, he focused heavily on military matters in the Commons and served in the Whips' Office in the governments of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. His decision to switch parties follows a number of other ex-Tory MPs defecting including Jake Berry, Anne Marie Morris and Ross Thomson. More defections are expected in the coming weeks. In a statement, Nigel Farage told The Spectator that 'Adam's parliamentary and military experience will be vital as we look forward to the next general election.' He added that Holloway's 'bold move shows that we are the only serious option in Kent and is testament to the fantastic work our councillors are delivering across the region.' In May, Reform UK won 57 on Kent County Council, with the Conservatives reduced to just five wards overall. Holloway told The Spectator that he had decided to quit the party as he now believed that it was beyond salvation. He said that 'Kemi is a fighter but she's surrounded by too many who'd be Lib Dems if the Lib Dems were winning. She can't charge from a trench full of MPs who won't follow her.' With his experience in the Armed Servives, he is expected to lead heavily on Reform UK's campaigns to grant immunity from prosecution for former British soldiers.

How 8.8-magnitude earthquake and tsunamis are causing major flight disruption
Multiple travel alerts have been issued to British citizens after Russia's Far East was rattled by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake, resulting in tsunami waves as high as 13 feet. Travellers in a dozen countries – the US, Canada, Philippines, Taiwan, China, Tonga, Togo, New Zealand, Ecuador, Solomon Islands, Peru, Samoa, Japan, Kiribati, Costa Rica, French Polynesia and Chile – have been urged to follow 'local advice' as evacuations are ongoing. Follow the latest updates on the earthquake on Russia's Kamchatka peninsula with Metro's live blog In Japan alone, nearly two million people have been rushed to safety from coastal areas in the north, with the meteorological agency confirming that sections of the east coast of Hokkaido and main island Honshu had seen waves of up to one metre in height. Part of Shinkansen bullet train service has also been temporarily axed dueto the warnings. The UK Foreign Office said: 'An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 has struck the eastern coast of Russia in the Kamchatka Peninsula region. A tsunami threat message has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. 'If you are in the affected areas potentially affected by the earthquake or tsunami you should follow the advice of the local authorities.' But the FCDO has stopped short of actually warning against travel to any of the affected regions following the earthquake – apart from Russia, but the country has been on Britain's 'no-go' list since the early days of the war in Ukraine. So no areas in Japan, the US or Hawaii, for example, were deemed 'unsafe' because of the tsunami – but people have still been urged not to travel. In the hours after the earthquake – and the multiple tremors that followed – hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal areas, with some of them trying to make a run for airports. While some tsunami warnings have been downgraded and alerts dropped, as many as hundreds of flights have been cancelled. Guangzhou Baiyun, Shanghai Pudong and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airports in China, Sendai Airport in Japan,Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Indonesia and the Las Vegas Airport in the US have all been graded five – the maximum in FlightRadar's disruption index, indicating major problems. Pictures showed dozens of travellers waiting for updates after their flights were cancelled. All flights out of Maui Airport were also stopped for the night, with more than 200 people left sheltering at the departure lounge. Chip McCreery, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Director, stressed the 'worst part of it' is over. Yet, South American nations like Chile and Colombia are bracing for the threat. Chile has upgraded its tsunami warning to the highest level, covering most of its lengthy Pacific coast. The country's national emergency service said it was evacuating hundreds of people and school was cancelled along much of the coast. Similarly, Colombia has issued tsunami alerts and warnings for the areas of Choco and Narino, and for Cauca and Valle del Cauca respectively. More Trending The country's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management said: 'Preemptive evacuation of beaches and low-tide areas on the coasts of Narino and Choco is recommended. 'Go to high ground and away from the coast.' Meanwhile, the Washington branch of the US National Weather Service said coastal areas west of Seattle were still seeing severe waves. It asked people not to travel to the shores to watch the waves, and instead 'keep away.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page.
