Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah writes to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, seeks urgent help for mango farmers

India Gazette2 days ago

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 13 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday write a letter to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, asking for urgent help for mango farmers in the state. He said that mango prices have dropped sharply this season, causing big losses for farmers. Many small and marginal farmers are struggling to even cover their basic costs.
In his letter, the Chief Minister requested the Centre to start a Price Deficiency Payment Scheme and begin immediate procurement through agencies like NAFED to support farmers and stop further distress in rural areas.
'I am writing to draw your immediate and personal attention to the severe distress being faced by mango farmers across Karnataka due to a sharp and unsustainable decline in market prices during the current harvest season. Mango is one of Karnataka's major horticultural crops, cultivated over an area of approximately 1.39 lakh hectares, with an estimated production of 8-10 lakh metric tonnes this Rabi season, particularly in Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Urban, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, and Bangalore South districts,' the letter reads.
'During the peak harvest months of May to July, heavy market arrivals have led to substantial price fluctuations. Market prices, which earlier hovered around 12,000 per quintal, have now plummeted to as low as 23,000 per quintal, while the Karnataka State Agriculture Price Commission has recommended the cost of cultivation at 25,466 per quintal. This sharp mismatch between production costs and market realisations has placed the farming community under acute financial stress,' the letter reads.
Siddaramaiah has said that thousands of small mango farmers are facing big losses and can't even cover their basic farming costs. In his letter to the Centre, he warned that farmer protests are rising and the situation could become worse if quick action is not taken.
'Thousands of small and marginal mango growers are unable to recover even their basic input costs, leading to widespread protests and growing agrarian anxiety. Unless prompt and effective intervention is undertaken, this crisis may lead to serious socio-economic consequences in the region,' the letter further reads.
He asked the central government to quickly start a Price Deficiency Payment Scheme to help mango farmers. He also requested agencies like NAFED and NCCF to begin buying mangoes at fair prices to make sure farmers get at least their basic costs. This support will help stop farmers from facing more losses and protect their income during this hard time.
'In view of this grave situation, I earnestly request that immediate steps be taken to implement a Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS) under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for mango, as an urgent policy response. Necessary directions may also be issued to designated central procurement egencies such as NAFED and NCCF to initiate procurement operations immediately at an appropriato intervention price, ensuring that farmers receive at foast the minimum cost of cultivation as a safety net Such a timely intervention will not only help to stabilize prices but also prevent further deepening of rural distress and will ensure that the interests of our farming community are adequately protected during this difficult period. I look forward to your immediate and sympathetic consideration in the larger interest of lakhs of farmers in Karnataka,' the letter further mentioned. (ANI)

Long-term power sale pact: KSERC rejects KSEB's plea

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala state electricity regulatory commission (KSERC) rejected KSEB's plea to direct power-generating agencies to comply with the commission's order to honour the long-term power sale agreements, to which the regulator initially denied permission but revised its decision later following state govt intervention. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now KSEB was the first power utility in the country to tap into the 25-year-long power purchase scheme introduced by the Union power ministry in 2013. A year after KSEB signed the pacts, the commission pointed out some deviations in the conditions set by the central govt for the power purchase agreement. It said KSEB should have obtained prior permission from the commission and wanted KSEB to obtain clearance from the Centre. The Centre, however, recommended appropriate steps as deemed fit by the Kerala govt, regulatory commission, and KSEB. Since the agreements were already signed, there was no point in the Centre suggesting how to proceed, it said. The LDF govt also developed some scepticism about the deviations pointed out by the regulatory commission for the 465 MW power purchase agreements signed when the UDF was in power. Subsequently, the commission in March 2023 rejected KSEB's approval for the power purchase. However, following the acute power crisis and mounting criticism against the commission for annulling the power purchase agreements on technical grounds, the state govt was forced to exercise section 109 (2) of the Electricity Act and ask the commission to let KSEB draw power from the agreements cancelled by the commission. Though the commission complied and gave KSEB permission to draw power, most of the companies refused to reinstate the agreements which the commission earlier annulled. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Eventually, all companies stopped supplying power to KSEB as the cost of power increased significantly by then. It was in this context that KSEB approached the commission, seeking directives to two power generators who refused to honour the agreement, which the commission once cancelled and later gave conditional approval following govt intervention. KSEB said in its petition that it was in talks with one of the generating companies and hence the directive should be passed against the other two. However, the commission, in its order on June 12, said the petition filed by KSEB was defective in pleading and not legally sustainable.

Centre defers QCO on textile machinery to 2026

Surat: The ministry of heavy industries, Govt of India, has extended the implementation of the Quality Control Order (QCO) on textile machinery to Sept 2026. The QCO was earlier scheduled to be enforced from August 2025, but various industry stakeholders, including textile manufacturers, had raised concerns. On August 28, 2024, the ministry had issued the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order 2024, making the QCO mandatory for weaving and embroidery machines, including their assemblies and sub-assemblies. The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), under the leadership of its immediate past president Vijay Mevawala, had made several representations to the Centre. "This will benefit the industry, and the growth cycle will continue in the textile sector in the region. We thank the govt for considering trade and industry's viewpoint," said Mevawala. SGCCI president Nikhil Madrasi added, "This decision enables Indian manufacturers to produce high-speed weaving and embroidery machinery on par with imported ones, furthering the ' Make in India ' vision." Recently, SGCCI vice-president Ashok Jirawala, former president Ashish Gujarati and other industrial bodies met Union minister for heavy industries HD Kumaraswamy in New Delhi to urge deferment of the QCO. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 5 Dividend Stocks for May 2025 Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo They argued that Surat, the country's largest MMF textile hub, annually imports 2,500 to 4,000 high-speed weaving and embroidery machines, many of which are not yet made domestically. Given that MMF continues to dominate textile investments — particularly in waterjet, airjet, and rapier machines — the industry had sought time until domestic manufacturing capacity matched import quality. The Centre's latest decision comes as a major relief for the sector. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Telangana raises alarm over Centre's draft registration bill

Hyderabad: Raising red flags over key provisions in the Centre's draft registration (amendment) bill 2025, the Telangana govt is preparing to formally object to clauses it believes could severely affect state revenues and complicate property registration processes. Among the most contentious issues are proposed caps on registration charges and the move toward full online registration, which the state says may open the door to fraud and impersonation. The department of land resources under the Union govt released the draft bill last month, seeking feedback from states and the public by June 26. The legislation is expected to be introduced in the upcoming Parliament session. In response, Telangana is not only drafting its objections but also looking to mobilise support from neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, and is considering joint official-level meetings to present a united front. Reforms with risks While Telangana is not opposed to digitisation in principle—it has already implemented online slot booking and e-application processes in several departments—officials insist that blanket online registration is fraught with risks in its current form. "Online registration, especially for sale deeds, raises serious concerns around authenticity and fraud. In-person verification ensures the seller appears before the sub-registrar to confirm that the transaction is genuine and voluntary," a senior official from the registration department told TOI. "It's not possible to verify documents or detect impersonation reliably in a fully online system, especially when land values in Telangana are among the highest in the country, making fraud more lucrative," he said. Although some states have experimented with video-call based verification, officials caution that even those methods are only used selectively, not as a complete replacement for physical presence. Revenue loss fears Telangana is also strongly opposed to the proposal for 'reasonable' registration charges and a uniform ceiling on fees, arguing that such a move infringes on the state's fiscal autonomy and could significantly reduce its Rs 15,000 crore annual revenue from stamps and registration. "This revenue is critical to fund welfare schemes. Article 265 of the Constitution clearly states that taxation authority lies with the states. The proposed amendments violate that principle," a senior official pointed out. Public access to GPAs, wills Another major concern for Telangana is the proposed change to Books 3 and 4—which cover general power of attorney (GPA) and wills. The draft bill proposes making certified copies of these documents publicly accessible. Officials argue that since these are personal and often sensitive documents, certified copies are currently issued only to family members or under court orders. "If these are made public, it could result in legal complications, misuse, and even property disputes," a sub-registrar warned. Currently, GPAs and wills also do not reflect in the encumbrance certificate, maintaining a layer of confidentiality. Despite its reservations, the state has welcomed certain provisions of the bill—such as the inclusion of lease deed registrations, a clearer definition of 'execution', and provisions for creating new posts within the registration department.
