Prayagraj: In a move to enhance passenger convenience and bring transparency to ticketing, Indian Railways initiated a pilot project under which reservation charts will now be prepared 24 hours before train departure.
The Prayagraj-Delhi Humsafar Express became first train in the country to implement this change. New system was rolled out on Thursday, with the reservation chart for the train being released late Wednesday night.
This pilot project marks a historic shift in Indian Railways' operations and is part of broader efforts under the Digital India initiative and passenger-centric reforms. Until now, Indian Railways prepared the first reservation chart four hours before departure and the second chart just two hours prior.
The new system is expected to provide passengers with more time to plan their journeys and make necessary arrangements.
According to North Central Railway, this new reservation system will first be applied to Humsafar category trains and will be gradually expanded to include premium trains like Rajdhani, Mail, Express, and Superfast services. By preparing the reservation chart a full day in advance, passengers will be able to view seat availability and confirm reservations well ahead of time, reducing uncertainty and allowing those on the waiting list to consider alternative travel plans.
Railway officials believe this change will bring transparency to ticketing process and enhance the overall passenger experience. The updated chart information will be readily available on IRCTC app and website, giving users instant access to reservation details.

Indian Railways offers free Wi-Fi services at 6,115 railway stations: Minister

New Delhi: Indian Railways is providing free Wi-Fi facilities at 6,115 railway stations across the country, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday. The free Wi-Fi service at railway stations is part of the government's Digital India Programme , aimed at bridging the urban-rural digital gap. "Almost all railway stations across Indian Railways have 4G/5G coverage provided by the Telecom Service Providers. These networks are also being utilised by passengers for data connectivity, resulting in an enhanced passenger experience. Besides the above, free Wi-Fi services have also been provided at 6,115 railway stations," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question. At these stations, passengers can watch HD videos, download entertainment content, and perform office work via free Wi-Fi. To access the Wi-Fi service, passengers have to switch on the Wi-Fi mode on their smartphone and connect to 'RailWire' Wi-Fi. They have to enter their cell number for an SMS OTP and start accessing Wi-Fi. Apart from all major stations like New Delhi, Mumbai Central, Chennai Central, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, in Tier 1 cities covered in this programme, many Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are also covered. Tier 2 cities like Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Meerut, Bhopal, etc, are covered along with tier 3 cities like Rohtak and Cuttack. The free Wi-Fi at Indian railway stations is provided by RailTel , a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways, using its 'RailWire' brand. RailTel has previously collaborated with organisations such as Google and Tata Trusts to expand the project, but the PSU is now handling the management and access of RailWire on its own. RailTel in April won a major order worth ₹90.08 crore from the Institute of Road Transport. Its shares have given over 140 per cent returns to investors over the past five years.

TRAI releases manual to assess digital connectivity in buildings, properties

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) on Wednesday released the manual for rating properties for digital connectivity. This is the country's first standardised framework to assess how effectively buildings are equipped for high-speed digital connectivity, particularly since telecom carriers are focused on driving the reach of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks deep in urban and rural areas. It noted that more than 80% of mobile data is consumed indoors, and high-frequency band signals of 4G and 5G are often weakened by building materials, necessitating robust in-building networks for applications such as work, education, healthcare, and digital services. Developed under the Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity Regulations, 2024, the manual establishes a uniform assessment methodology for Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies (DCRAs). The manual will also be a readily available reference framework for property managers (PMs) and telecom providers to plan, implement, and and maintain future-ready digital connectivity infrastructure (DCI); define transparent, standardised criteria for property ratings, including fibre readiness, in-building mobile coverage, Wi-Fi coverage, broadband speeds and overall user experience; enable buyers, tenants, and businesses to make informed decisions based on actual digital connectivity performance; and encourages developers to integrate robust digital infrastructure from the design and construction stage. "In the 21st century, digital connectivity is not a luxury -- it is essential infrastructure, just like electricity or water. Today, it powers growth, innovation, and opportunity. This framework is a decisive step towards making every building in India ready for the Digital India vision, enabling more citizens to participate fully in our connected economy and laying the foundation for inclusive national growth," said Anil Kumar Lahoti , chairman, TRAI. Reliable digital infrastructure is foundational for economic growth, innovation, and social welfare, said the telecom watchdog. With most data usage occurring indoors, ensuring robust in-building digital connectivity has become critical. To address this, TRAI notified the "Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity Regulations, 2024" on October 25 last year.
