Filmmaker S Shankar faces criticism after claiming his project Velpari could match Avatar and Game of Thrones. Critics cite his recent flops, Game Changer and Indian 2.
Filmmaker S Shankar has found himself at the centre of social media criticism after making bold statements about his upcoming project titled Velpari. The director claimed that the film, an adaptation of the historical Tamil novel, has the potential to match the global scale and technological achievements of international hits like Avatar and Game of Thrones.
Speaking at a recent event, Shankar said, 'Enthiran (2010 film with superstar Rajinikanth) was my previous dream project. Now, Velpari is my dream film. It has the scope to introduce new technologies like Game of Thrones and Avatar. Velpari has the potential to become the pride of Tamil cinema and Indian cinema. It can achieve global recognition. Hope the dream comes true."
'Enthiran was my Previous Dream project, now #Velpari is my dream film🤞. It scope to introduce new technologies. Like GameOfThrones & Avatar, Velparu has all scope to become our Pride Indian-Tamil film❤️‍🔥. However, the director's grand vision has sparked skepticism online, especially given the poor performance of his recent films. His last two releases, Game Changer and Indian 2, failed to meet expectations, both at the box office and among critics.
Game Changer, starring Ram Charan, was reportedly made on a massive budget of Rs 400 crore but managed to earn only Rs 186 crore worldwide. Similarly, Indian 2, produced on a budget of Rs 250 crore, grossed about Rs 150 crore globally. Both projects were widely considered commercial disappointments.
Following his comments about Velpari, several users on social media platforms expressed frustration, accusing Shankar of focusing too much on high budgets and flashy technology, while ignoring storytelling and financial accountability.
One user wrote, 'Producer will have to beg after this film… Sir, at least try to do good films in a limited budget. You waste too much money! Who spent 75 crore for a song only?" Others called for him to scale down his productions or even suggested retirement.
Shankar has yet to respond to the backlash, but with no confirmed producer yet attached to Velpari, questions remain about whether the ambitious project will move forward.

Box Office: Sitaare Zameen Par continues with healthy trend; Aamir Khan starrer collects Rs 155 crore in 24 days

The Aamir Khan-led Sitaare Zameen Par is continuing with its healthy run at the box office in India, as the film has collected Rs 5.75 crore in its fourth weekend, taking the total nett collections to Rs 155 crore. The social dramedy scored Rs 1.00 crore on 4th Friday, followed by a jump to Rs 2.25 crore and Rs 2.50 crore respectively on 4th Saturday and 4th Sunday. The RS Prassana directorial is continuing to get numbers in the urban markets, and is now nearing te end of its run. The lifetime collections of Sitaare Zameen Par could now fall in the range of Rs 165 crore to Rs 170 crore, which is more or less in the same range as Raid 2 and Housefull 5. One must note that, given the controlled budget and a good theatrical trend, Sitaare Zameen Par has emerged a hit venture at the box office. The verdict is largely driven by the weekend-to-weekend trajectory of this Aamir Khan starrer, as the film is getting patronage from the family audience on every Saturday and Sunday since its release. The box office is in a much better shape now as mid-range films have started to do well, and cinema is no longer a medium for just the tentpole spectacles. A finish in the north of Rs 200 crore would have been sweeter for Sitaare Zameen Par, but the drop on the first Monday had more or less put curtains on the dreams of a double century in India. Nonetheless, this is a good result for the Aamir Khan starrer, and a much-needed HIT for the actor, bringing him back in the business. Sitaare Zameen Par Day Wise Box Office Collection Week One: Rs 87.50 crore Week Two: Rs 44.50 crore Week Three: Rs 17.25 crore 4th Friday: Rs 1.00 crore 4th Saturday: Rs 2.25 crore 4th Sunday: Rs 2.50 crore Total: Rs 155 crore

Nine years after theatrical release, Emilia Clarke's ‘Me Before You' climbs Prime Video charts

'Me Before You', a romantic drama starring 'Game of Thrones' actor Emilia Clarke, which once stirred strong reactions, is now gaining newfound popularity on Amazon Prime Video. The 2016 film, which also stars Sam Claflin, has surged into Prime Video's global Top 10 rankings nearly a decade after its theatrical release. Directed by Thea Sharrock, the film was adapted from Jojo Moyes' bestselling novel. It follows Louisa Clark, a quirky caretaker who develops a complex relationship with Will Traynor, a wealthy man left paralysed after an accident. Although the movie was commercially successful during its initial run, a Screen Rant report said it drew significant backlash for its depiction of disability and portrayal of assisted suicide or euthanasia. Another report in Collider cited FlixPatrol data showing 'Me Before You' has recently climbed the Prime Video Top 10 lists in several countries, including Argentina, Egypt, Guatemala, Mexico and the United States. On July 5, the film reached its highest average international ranking, sitting at 5.4 across 13 countries. Earlier this year, it had entered the US Top 10, marking a resurgence in English-speaking markets, the Screen Rant report added. When the movie, which also stars Janet McTeer and Joanna Lumley, was released in 2016, it grossed $208.4 million worldwide against a modest $20 million budget: a 10.4x return on investment. It outperformed titles like 'Arrival', 'The BFG' and 'Bridget Jones's Baby', becoming the 42nd highest-grossing movie of the year. The Collider report stated that while audiences gave the film a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics were less favorable, with a 54% score. Much of the criticism centered around the film's messaging and handling of sensitive themes, particularly regarding the protagonist's decision to pursue assisted suicide. Emilia Clarke's role as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's 'Game of Thrones' catapulted her to fame. Since the series ended in 2019, Clarke has taken on a variety of roles, from the romantic holiday film 'Last Christmas' to her recent appearance in Marvel's 'Secret Invasion'. In spite of mixed reception for some projects, Clarke's role in 'Me Before You' remains one of her most emotionally resonant performances ever. Why was 'Me Before You' controversial? The film was criticised for promoting ableist ideas and for its portrayal of assisted suicide (euthanasia) as a romantic act, which drew backlash from disability rights activists. Is 'Me Before You' based on a true story? No. The film is a fictional adaptation of Jojo Moyes' 2012 bestselling novel of the same name. Where can you watch 'Me Before You' now? 'Me Before You' is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
