Nine years after theatrical release, Emilia Clarke's ‘Me Before You' climbs Prime Video charts

Mint18 hours ago
'Me Before You', a romantic drama starring 'Game of Thrones' actor Emilia Clarke, which once stirred strong reactions, is now gaining newfound popularity on Amazon Prime Video.
The 2016 film, which also stars Sam Claflin, has surged into Prime Video's global Top 10 rankings nearly a decade after its theatrical release.
Directed by Thea Sharrock, the film was adapted from Jojo Moyes' bestselling novel. It follows Louisa Clark, a quirky caretaker who develops a complex relationship with Will Traynor, a wealthy man left paralysed after an accident.
Although the movie was commercially successful during its initial run, a Screen Rant report said it drew significant backlash for its depiction of disability and portrayal of assisted suicide or euthanasia.
Another report in Collider cited FlixPatrol data showing 'Me Before You' has recently climbed the Prime Video Top 10 lists in several countries, including Argentina, Egypt, Guatemala, Mexico and the United States. On July 5, the film reached its highest average international ranking, sitting at 5.4 across 13 countries.
Earlier this year, it had entered the US Top 10, marking a resurgence in English-speaking markets, the Screen Rant report added.
When the movie, which also stars Janet McTeer and Joanna Lumley, was released in 2016, it grossed $208.4 million worldwide against a modest $20 million budget: a 10.4x return on investment. It outperformed titles like 'Arrival', 'The BFG' and 'Bridget Jones's Baby', becoming the 42nd highest-grossing movie of the year.
The Collider report stated that while audiences gave the film a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics were less favorable, with a 54% score. Much of the criticism centered around the film's messaging and handling of sensitive themes, particularly regarding the protagonist's decision to pursue assisted suicide.
Emilia Clarke's role as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's 'Game of Thrones' catapulted her to fame. Since the series ended in 2019, Clarke has taken on a variety of roles, from the romantic holiday film 'Last Christmas' to her recent appearance in Marvel's 'Secret Invasion'. In spite of mixed reception for some projects, Clarke's role in 'Me Before You' remains one of her most emotionally resonant performances ever.
Why was 'Me Before You' controversial?
The film was criticised for promoting ableist ideas and for its portrayal of assisted suicide (euthanasia) as a romantic act, which drew backlash from disability rights activists.
Is 'Me Before You' based on a true story?
No. The film is a fictional adaptation of Jojo Moyes' 2012 bestselling novel of the same name.
Where can you watch 'Me Before You' now?
'Me Before You' is currently available to stream on Prime Video.

Superman Box Office Collection Day 3: James Gunn's Film Soars With Rs 25 Crore Weekend

Last Updated: Superman's latest film by James Gunn had a smashing start, earning Rs 7 crore on Day 1. By Day 3, it soared to Rs 25.50 crore due to great word-of-mouth and packed shows. The Man of Steel is flying high once again with James Gunn at the helm. Superman, starring David Corenswet in the iconic cape, has had a strong start at the box office, raking in Rs 25.50 crore over its first weekend. The film opened with an impressive Rs 7 crore on Day 1 and kept the momentum going. By Day 3 (Sunday), it added another Rs 9 crore to its total, thanks to packed evening and night shows in major cities. As per early estimates from Sacnilk, Superman brought in Rs 9 crore on its third day at the box office. The English version recorded an overall occupancy of 33.04 per cent, with evening shows drawing the biggest crowds at 44.69 per cent. Going by the numbers, Superman is also the third-best opening for a Hollywood film in India in 2025 after Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning and the Scarlett Johansson-starrer Jurassic World: Rebirth. As expected, the film is performing strongly in premium formats such as IMAX and 4DX, with the biggest revenue coming from urban regions. In comparison to other big Hollywood releases in recent times, Superman has outperformed Brad Pitt's racing films, F1, Final Destination: Bloodlines, as well as Captain America: Brave New World. Alongside David Corenswet as the new Superman, the film features a star-studded Hollywood cast including Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock. This fresh take on the superhero doesn't revisit the usual origin story. Instead, it explores a younger Clark Kent navigating the tricky balance between his Kryptonian roots and his human upbringing. The film dives into his early years, tackling everything from a PR crisis and a personal identity struggle to his growing feelings for Lois Lane, all while facing off against a menacing Lex Luthor. In India, the film underwent a few changes before its theatrical release. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) suggested several edits, including trimming a 33-second kissing scene between David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. According to Bollywood Hungama, the CBFC also directed the studio to remove all explicit language. One particular 8-second sequence involving a slang gesture was cut and replaced with a two-second alternate shot to make the film suitable for Indian audiences. Anupam Kher To NDTV: " Tanvi The Great Is My Autistic Niece's Story"

Veteran actor Anupam Kher is returning to direction with Tanvi The Great, 23 years after his directorial debut Om Jai Jagadish. Starring debutante Shubhangi Dutt in the titular role, the Hindi film is slated to be released in theatres on Friday (July 18). In an interview with NDTV, Anupam Kher shared Tanvi The Great is a personal story as it draws inspiration from his maternal niece named Tanvi who has autism. "This is a personal story. Tanvi is my maternal niece who is autistic. I was once here in Gurugram to attend my cousin's wedding. Tanvi was 13 at the time. People were singing and dancing, they were having a lot of fun. "But Tanvi was standing all alone and looking at a mountain. I asked her, 'Tanvi, what are you doing?' And she said, 'I'm looking at my world'. That was a very heavy statement. I didn't understand what her world was or maybe she wasn't able to make me understand what she was trying to say. That's how the seed of the story took root," the actor-filmmaker said. Anupam Kher, who has co-written the film along with Ankur Suman and Abhishek Dixit, said Tanvi The Great is an entertaining film with great music. "We don't have tears in our eyes when we watch the film... It's not the tragic story of an autistic girl but because through her we get to witness goodness, honesty, and joy," he added. The film, produced by Anupam Kher Studios in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), has music by Oscar winner MM Keeravaani and lyrics by Kausar Munir. Tanvi The Great also stars Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, Nassar, and Iain Glen of Game of Thrones fame.
