‘I will be on the road': Rakesh Roshan's daughter recalls how the family's fate was tied to his directorial debut, says, ‘Hrithik and I just looked at each other'

Indian Express03-05-2025

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has previously opened up about the time when he mortgaged many of his assets while making his directorial debut Khudgarz. At the time, Rakesh was already an actor and a producer but was not finding the success he dreamed of, so, he decided to direct. In a new interview, Rakesh's daughter Sunaina shared that since he had mortgaged a lot of assets for Khudgarz, there was a big chance that the family could have lost everything.
In a chat with Pinkvilla, Sunaina said that while the family was driving to the premiere of Khudgarz, her mother asked Rakesh what would happen if the film flopped. 'And Dad was like, 'I will be on the road'. So me and my brother just looked at each other and we were like… We didn't still understand what that meant but we were like, we will be on the road,' she recalled.
Sunaina said that things worked out for them, but a few years later, he was ready to bet it all again for Hrithik Roshan 's debut film, Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. 'For Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, he mortgaged everything, he is a risk taker so he mortgaged everything and luckily, it did well,' she said. Sunaina said that since she was a teenager during Khudgarz, she didn't know much about the business, but she learnt that during Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, all of Rakesh's assets were on the line.
'During Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, I know he mortgaged his house, his office, his cars, everything. It must have been very hard on my mother and my father, and not letting the children know,' she said. Kaho Naa Pyar Hai was an instant success and turned Hrithik into a star. A week after the film's release, Rakesh Roshan was shot on the street but he survived the attack. In an earlier chat with Bollywood Hungama, Rakesh had claimed the underworld had orchestrated this attack because they wanted Hrithik to work in a film financed by them. 'I never gave any indication that Hrithik could do a film for them,' he said.
Sunaina said that Rakesh always taught them to live below their means so even if they encounter tough times, they can get through. 'He always taught me and my brother to live below our means. (He said) Tomorrow, if you don't have the luxuries in life, I don't want you to miss it,' she said.

'Drishyam 3' is CONFIRMED; Ajay Devgn set to return as Vijay Salgaonkar amidst doubts around the film with the Mohanlal starrer releasing in Hindi as well

In April this month, a report suggested that Mohanlal and director Jeethu Joseph are set to release 'Drishyam 3' not just in Malayalam but also in Hindi. The report suggested plans of a Pan-India release for the Mohanlal starrer which raised doubts about the Hindi version of 'Drishyam 3' starring Ajay Devgn . This would raise trouble for the Ajay Devgn starrer as that was consumed by the north audiences. But if the original itself releases in Hindi, would people want to see another Hindi version? This would create a major competition between the two movies. Amidst these doubts around 'Drishyam 3', the Ajay Devgn starrer is finally confirmed. According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, the film has been confirmed in a formal announcement filed with the Bombay Stock Exchange on May 29, 2025 under Regulation 30 of SEBI's Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements. The production house Panorama Studios has confirmed the same. This letter states that once again Ajay Devgn will star in the lead role and Abhishek Pathak will direct the third part after he directed 'Drishyam 2'. Clearly, fans of the Hindi franchise will be quite excited with this news and would be waiting for it. The first two parts of 'Drishyam' have done phenomenally well at the box office. But apart from that, they've also become a huge part of the pop culture with the whole October 2 schedule of Vijay Salgaonkar and his family. Incidentally, just as the news gets confirmed today, Ajay Devgn was asked about 'Drishyam 3' at the trailer launch of 'Maa' in Mumbai on May 29. As he was about to answer the question, the host requested that this is not the platform to talk about 'Drishyam 3' and thus it was avoided. But fans can now get happy as the project is greenlit and people cannot wait for it. 'Drishyam' and 'Drishyam 2' both starred Tabu and the movies were also largely about Vijay Salgaonkar Vs Meera Deshmukh, so the actress could very much be a part of the third installment but there's no confirmation on that as of now. The second part also starred Akshaye Khanna. Check out our list of the latest Hindi , English , Tamil , Telugu , Malayalam , and Kannada movies . Amid Sandeep Reddy Vanga-Deepika Padukone feud, Ajay Devgn reacts to working moms demanding 8 hours shift: ‘I think…'

Deepika Padukone and Sandeep Reddy Vanga's ongoing feud has been catching all the attention ever since she was dropped from his film, Spirit. Reportedly, she was called 'unprofessional' for demanding an 8-hour workday and other conditions, which didn't go down well with the filmmaker. Amid this, Ajay Devgn commented on the 8-hour shift in the industry. Ajay attended the trailer launch of Kajol's upcoming horror film, Maa. At the event, Kajol was asked about her reaction to the ongoing 8-hour work shift demand by new mothers in the industry. She expressed her approval for it and jokingly said that she loves the idea of working less. Ajay, on the other hand, had a serious take on it. He said, "It's not that it is not going down well with people. A lot of people understand. Most of the honest filmmakers would not have a problem with it. Also, other than new moms working for 8 hours, most people have started working for 8 hours. I think it's person to person, and most of the industry understands." While no names were mentioned, the question can remind anyone of Deepika and Sandeep's recent fallout. As Deepika walked out of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's highly-anticipated Spirit, days after reports of her 'unprofessional' behaviour, Triptii Dimri was roped in for the project. She replaced Deepika in the lead, alongside actor Prabhas. She and Vanga last worked together on the highly successful film, Animal. Confirming their reunion, Triptii reacted to the news on social media. She wrote on Instagram, 'Still sinking in. So grateful to be trusted with this journey. Thank you @ to be a part of your vision.' Meanwhile, reports claim that Deepika who is a new mom after having daughter Dua, requested an 8-hour workday, which came down to 6 hours of actual shoot. She reportedly also demanded ₹ 20 crore as her salary for the film alongside a share in the film's profits. A source also told Bollywood Hungama, "Sandeep Reddy Vanga got the shock of his life when Deepika Padukone refused to shoot for more than 6 hours a day for Spirit. That's not all, the actress, via her agency, also started to demand an amendment to the contract. Their point of contention was simple - if the shoot extends beyond 100 days, Deepika will have to be paid extra for every single day of shoot beyond the commitment on paper." Around the same time, Sandeep Reddy Vanga shared a strong post on X. His post read, "When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA(Non-Disclosure Agreement) between us. But by doing this, you've 'DISCLOSED' the person that you down a younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for? As a filmmaker, I put years of hard work behind my craft & for me, filmmaking is everything. You didn't get it. You won't get it. You will never get it."
