Morganton man allegedly breaks into his children's home, violating protection order
MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man is charged after breaking into the home of his kids, violating a domestic violence protection order, according to the Morganton Department of Public Safety.
Around 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, officers received a call from a woman about a breaking & entering incident. The caller said her children's father, 34-year-old Oscar Humberto Eliza-Velasquez, had gotten inside the home and was in the living room.
Officials said the caller and three of her children were hiding in another room and told law enforcement there was a domestic violence protection order (DPVO) in place.

When officers arrived, they set up a perimeter and were able to safely get the caller and her children out of the home. Velasquez was detained and found to be highly intoxicated while violating the DPVO court order. Velasquez allegedly also texted his wife throughout the time of the DPVO.
Velasquez was charged with felony breaking and entering with intent to terrorize, violation of a DPVO, and domestic criminal trespass. He also had an active warrant for failing to appear in court on the original crime of domestic violence. His bond has not yet been set.

Driver arrested after crash injures 3 children at lemonade stand in Burke County
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 24-year-old woman has been charged after a crash sent a vehicle off the road and into three young girls who were running a lemonade stand. The accident happened around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, on Conley Road near Arthur Mull Road, just south of Morganton. According to the NC State Highway Patrol, Haley Erin McCorkle, of Hickory, was trying to turn left out of a driveway in a Chevrolet HHR when she pulled into the path of an oncoming Nissan Altima. The impact pushed the Nissan off the road and into a front yard, right where three girls, ages 7, 8, and 9, had set up a lemonade stand for the afternoon. All three were critically injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Two were airlifted; the third was taken by ambulance. 'I was scared': Family of Morganton girl hit by car, along with two others, recounts the tragic moment None of the drivers involved were hurt in the crash. McCorkle is now facing charges for failure to yield the right of way, causing serious bodily injury. Troopers said there's no indication that speed or impairment played a role in the crash. Family members of the injured girls said the crash happened in an instant. 'I was right there, and it just happened so fast,' said Elizabeth, the sister of one of the girls. 'I just ran and got my mom.' The girls' parents described the scene as terrifying and heartbreaking. One father said he was traumatized after seeing what happened to the children. Charlotte City Councilwoman says she's running for reelection after mistakenly sent email claimed she wouldn't
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Despite an email sent to supporters claiming she isn't running for re-election, Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown says that email was sent by accident. The email sent Tuesday afternoon said Brown would not run again, but Brown confirmed with Queen City News's Chief Political Correspondent Andy Weber that the email was sent out by mistake and she is planning to seek another term. This fall, Brown will have a challenger for her council seat. Democrat Montravias King told Queen City News he will attempt to unseat Brown in the primary set for Sept. 9.
