MCS brings govt services closer to rural Paitan

PAITAN: The Mobile Community Services (MCS) programme led by the Sabah Treasury is proving effective in rural outreach, providing direct access to various government agencies, said Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib. Speaking at the MCS event at the Paitan District Office on Saturday, James said the initiative helps identify departments not yet permanently stationed in Paitan, which was recently declared a full district. He welcomed news that a District Education Officer will be permanently placed in Paitan, easing residents' administrative processes. Also present were Paitan District Officer Joe Joloning Majambu and Federal Financial Officer Norali @ Ag Norali Ag Damit. Norali noted that 36 agencies participated in the Paitan MCS, with upcoming programmes scheduled in Kota Marudu (June 18 and 21) and Pulau Jambongan, part of 12 MCS locations across Sabah.

TAWAU: Indonesian children studying at Community Learning Centres (CLCs) under plantation companies in Malaysia are urged to use their gadgets to seek knowledge and information about Indonesia. Chief Representative of the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia (KRI) in Tawau, Aris Heru Utomo, said they need to learn more about their country in order to deepen their pride in being Indonesian. 'Use your mobile phones not just to search for entertainment but seek knowledge and information about Indonesia as much as possible,' he said. He noted that Indonesia is a vast country made up of over 17,000 islands, rich in natural resources and home to various ethnicities and religions. 'With a strong love for their homeland, they will understand their nation, including its geography, natural beauty and unity in diversity,' he said. He also encouraged Indonesian children in Sabah to appreciate the song 'Tanah Airku' composed by Saridjah Niung Bintang Soedibjo, better known as Ibu Sud, as it reflects national values and love for the homeland. Advertisement 'The lyrics show that no matter where Indonesians wander, they will always love their homeland. 'To love means to be proud, to uphold the good name and to defend Indonesia through attitudes and actions… And since you are students, your actions should be to study, study and study,' he said during a visit to the Mostyn Estate CLC in Kunak, as part of the 'Consulate Goes to Community Learning Centre (CLC)' programme, which included a flag presentation ceremony by 57 of its students. He said the flag ceremony is important to nurture the spirit of Indonesian nationalism, while recognising the four national symbols: the red and white flag, the national language, the Garuda Pancasila emblem and the national anthem Indonesia Raya. He emphasised that it is the duty of all Indonesians, including students born and raised in Sabah, to honour and uphold these four symbols, which were forged by the nation's heroes. Monitor lizard shows up for breakfast

Kota Kinabalu: Breakfast diners at a coffee got more than their usual morning meal when an adult monitor lizard made an uninvited appearance inside the premises, startling customers and staff alike. The unusual incident happened at a coffee shop in Segama, where patrons had come in for their morning breakfast when the large reptile wandered into the establishment. Eyewitnesses described moments of surprise and confusion as the monitor lizard explored the indoor space, creating an unexpected wildlife encounter in an urban setting. Quick-thinking customers and staff members worked together to safely guide the animal back outside. Using gentle shooing methods, they successfully encouraged the monitor lizard to leave the premises without resorting to harmful measures. Fortunately, the incident ended without any injuries to either humans or the reptile. The monitor lizard appeared unharmed and made its way back to its natural habitat after the brief indoor excursion. Monitor lizards are common in Sabah and occasionally venture into populated areas in search of food or shelter. Developing sustainable and inclusive geoparks

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is actively implementing the National Geopark Development Plan 2021–2030 (PPGN) as a key strategy to develop sustainable and inclusive geoparks across the country, said Minerals and Geoscience Department Deputy Director Jenneth Liliana Cyril. She said the implementation of PPGN plays a crucial role in ensuring geoparks in Malaysia serve not only as protected geological areas but also as catalysts for economic development, environmental education and local community wellbeing. 'Malaysia has made notable progress in geopark development, beginning with Langkawi's recognition as a Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) in 2007, followed by Kinabalu Geopark being recognised as the country's second UGGp in 2023,' she said at the Malaysian Geopark Network Conference here. She noted that several other areas, including Jerai, Lembah Kinta, Labuan, Lenggong, Sarawak Delta, Stong, Gombak-Hulu Langat, Kenyir, Perlis and Lipis have been designated as National Geoparks. Moving forward to 2030, key targets include elevating Lenggong, Sarawak Delta and Gombak-Hulu Langat to UGGp status and recognising Melaka and Jelebu as new National Geoparks. 'The implementation of the National Geopark Development Plan is supported by the State Geopark Local Plan (PLGN), which will be adopted by state and local authorities once an area has received national geopark recognition. 'Together, PPGN and PLGN outline comprehensive strategies for planning, conservation, management, education and community participation, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),' Jenneth said. Advertisement She stressed that the real strength of geoparks lies in community involvement. 'Through the implementation of the Plan, local communities are empowered to engage in eco-tourism, small-scale heritage-based enterprises, conservation work and educational activities,' she added. These efforts, she said, contribute significantly to rural development and the economic empowerment of local populations. Janet reaffirmed JMG's commitment to working closely with State Governments, local authorities and international partners to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of the Plan.
