Three hikers rescued after getting lost at Mont Walker

SANDAKAN: Three hikers who went missing while trekking at Mont Walker this evening were safely found by the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department around 8.15 pm. The victims, two women aged 23 and 27 and a man aged 22, were located near the area in good condition. Sandakan Fire Station Chief Jimmy Lagung said they received an emergency call at 6.25 pm and dispatched seven personnel, led by operations commander Roger Julmin, to conduct the search and rescue (SAR) mission. The team, assisted by two police officers and seven members of the Civil Defence Force (APM), began the operation after arriving at the site, 12 km from the station, at 6.40 pm. Pedestrian killed after being hit by two vehicles in Sandakan
Published on: Saturday, May 31, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: SANDAKAN: A 50-year-old local woman died after being hit by two vehicles in an accident around 10.50 pm on Friday at Batu 4, Jalan Utara. Sandakan acting police chief Supt. Ramasamy Kuppan said initial investigations revealed that the first vehicle, a BYD Dolphin, was heading from IJM to Taman Tinosan in rainy and dark conditions when the pedestrian suddenly crossed and stood on the road. The driver, unable to brake in time, hit the victim, who was then thrown onto the path of an oncoming Naza Citra, which ran over her due to the close distance. The woman was taken to Duchess of Kent Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment in the emergency zone. Lorry driver injured in 10-foot drain plunge in Beluran
Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: BELURAN: A 42-year-old man was injured after the 10-ton lorry he was driving skidded off the road and plunged into a 10-foot-deep drain at Jalan Berkat Setia, Sapi Nangoh, earlier this evening. Beluran Fire and Rescue Station chief Edoen Macheal said the victim was rescued by firefighters, given first aid, and sent to a nearby hospital by Health Ministry ambulance for further treatment. The emergency call was received at 4.36 pm, and the team of six arrived at the scene 50km from the station at 5,40 pm. Repeat drug offender gets 5 years, 1 whip
Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Sessions Court on Thursday sentenced a local man, Mazlee Abd Latif, 26, to five years in prison and one stroke of the cane after he pleaded guilty to a drug offence committed in March this year. Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal handed down the sentence after Mazlee tested positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine during a police narcotics operation. A pathology report from Duchess of Kent Hospital later confirmed the presence of both substances. Mazlee was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15 and read together with Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act due to two prior convictions for similar offences in 2021 and 2023. Under Section 39C(1)(b), repeat offenders face a minimum of five years' imprisonment and up to three strokes of the cane, along with mandatory supervision under Section 38B(1) of the Act. Mazlee, who was unrepresented, was also ordered to be placed under police supervision for two years after completing his sentence. 11 illegals held in Sandakan

The arrests were made during a joint operation dubbed 'Ops Poket', carried out earlier, led by the Sandakan District Police Headquarters (IPD), in collaboration with the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM), Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), and the National Registration Department (JPN). Acting Sandakan District Police Chief, Supt Ramasamy Kuppan, said that the strategic cooperation between IPD Sandakan, JIM, MPS, and JPN, aimed at combating criminal activity and addressing the issue of undocumented immigrants as well as enforcing documentation laws and curbing illegal activities in the city. He was speaking in a press statement released on Tuesday.
