Fuel smuggling attempt worth RM1 million foiled off Sandakan

By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Some of the seized items. SANDAKAN: A fuel smuggling attempt worth RM1 million was foiled by the Marine Police in the waters off Tanjung Papat here early Saturday. Region 4 Marine Police commander ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said a patrol team detected and intercepted a suspicious fishing vessel around 1.10am during an operation. Upon inspection, officers found the vessel was attempting to smuggle subsidised diesel and petrol out of the country. A total of 32,800 litres of fuel, valued at RM1,020,240, was seized, and five individuals aged between 26 and 35, including one local and four foreigners, were detained for investigation. Bangkok shooting claims six lives near Chatuchak Market

The attack occurred around 12.30 pm local time at the popular Or Tor Kor fresh food market. The assailant, wearing a black T-shirt and military-style shorts and carrying a backpack, was believed to have used a handgun to open fire on others. Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet, confirmed the case and said the assailant was male and had used the handgun to take his own life at the scene. "Police officers are currently working to identify the individual and determine the motive behind the attack," he said in a brief statement on Monday. Kitrat also instructed the Metropolitan Police Bureau to urgently carry out a comprehensive investigation, gather as much evidence as possible, and examine CCTV footage to uncover the facts and swiftly solve the case. The Bangkok Emergency Medical Centre, commonly known as the Erawan Centre, confirmed that the casualties comprised four security personnel, one woman, and the assailant himself. Public urged to remain calm as police probe teen student's death in Papar

The student, Zara Qairina from SMS Tun Datu Mustafa Limauan, was found unconscious in a drain near her hostel in Papar around 4am on July 16. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu and was later pronounced dead on July 17 at about 1pm. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun, on Monday, said that the police is conducting a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. Police are working to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Members of the public are advised not to spread unverified information out of respect for the grieving family. Teen brothers charged with abduction, assault of lorry driver
SHAH ALAM: Two brothers were jointly charged at the magistrate's court today with two charges of abducting and voluntarily causing hurt to a lorry driver, allegedly over a monetary dispute last week. V. Kirtik Ram, 19, and V. Theshvinram, 18, pleaded not guilty after the two joint charges were read out to them before magistrate Mohamad Redza Azhar Rezali. Kirtik, a lorry attendant, and Theshvinram, a p-hailing rider, both wearing face masks, stood side by side near the dock during proceedings and nodded to show they understood the charges. They claimed trial to the charges of kidnapping with the intent to secretly and wrongfully confine someone and causing injuries on Muhamad Azwar Danish Rosmadi, 21. The alleged incident occurred at 6.38pm in Jalan Persiaran Puchong Permai, Puchong, on July 22. The charges under Section 365 and Section 323 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code carry a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine, as well as a jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Akhilah Rosmi urged the court to set bail of RM8,000 for each charge. Defence lawyer Noor Farazidah asked the court to set a minimal bail. She said the brothers are taking care of their 64-year-old grandmother and are supporting their younger siblings. "The accused are young offenders and voluntarily surrendered to the police. "Kirtik earns RM1,500 a month as a lorry attendant while Theshvinram, who suffers from shoulder injuries, has unstable income as a p-hailing rider. "They are innocent until proven guilty, and I ask for them to be given the lowest possible bail," she said. Redza set bail at RM7,000 with one surety for each accused and set Sept 8 for mention. Last Friday, their alleged accomplice, lorry driver, P. Nandakumaar, 32, was charged under Section 365 in connection with the same case before Shah Alam court magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman. He, however, was denied bail. Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat had said three suspects were arrested in Puchong and Hulu Selangor for their involvement in the abduction. Police seized clothes and mobile phones to facilitate further investigations. Wan Azlan said based on preliminary investigations, the motive of the abduction is unpaid debt. A 40-second video clip of the victim being forcibly shoved into the back of a lorry recorded by a road user has gone viral. The men were seen assaulting the victim as they pushed him into the lorry. Acting on a tip-off, a man was arrested and he was found with the victim.
