Neelakurinji biodiversity learning festival
A three-day-long Neelakurinji biodiversity learning festival for schoolchildren will begin at the Neelakurinji biodiversity knowledge centre on the premises of Government High School, Adimaly, in Idukki on Friday. The festival begins with a friendly nature drawing.
According to officials, the 60-odd participants of the camp are winners of district-level quiz contests organised by the Haritha Keralam Mission.
The learning festival will be held at Adimaly in connection with the International Day for Biological Diversity. Officials said the project aimed to create awareness among students about biodiversity and the importance of preserving it.
The festival also includes visits to the Neelakurinji biodiversity knowledge centre, travel to Munnar, birdwatching, butterfly monitoring, Eravikulam National Park (ENP), the Mattuppetty Indo-Swiss project, and classes with environmental experts.

Greening programmes mark World Environment Day celebrations in Kochi
Planting of saplings, setting up of mini forests and green islets marked World Environment Day celebrations held in Ernakulam on Thursday. At a programme held in the headquarters of the Varapuzha Archdiocese here, Archbishop of Varapuzha Joseph Kalathiparambil handed over saplings of vetiver to Kochi Mayor M. Anilkumar. The saplings will be planted at the dumping site of the civic body at Brahmapuram, where biomining was carried out to remove waste heaps, according to a release issued here. The Mayor also inaugurated the clean-up and environmental initiatives of the Varapuzha Archdiocese on the occasion. The Maradu municipal authorities initiated works to set up a green islet comprising fruit trees to mark Environment Day celebrations. It was set up up near the material collection facility near the 16th division in the municipality. Antony Ashanparambil, chairperson, planted various fruit tree saplings. District Collector N.S.K Umesh inaugurated the green islet project at nearly four cents on the civil station premises at Kakkanad by planting saplings. Traditional fruit trees will be planted at the site as part of the joint project involving the district administration, Haritha Keralam Mission, Thrikkakara municipality and Rotary Club. 'Changathikkoru Maram' (a tree for a friend) project was inaugurated at the Don Bosco Senior Secondary School here as part of a programme organised by the Haritha Keralam Mission and the Kochi Corporation. Students exchanged tree saplings as part of the green initiative. 'YouCanHeal', a dashboard app by students of computer applications and recognised by the Department of Environment and Climate Change and the Kochi Corporation, was launched at a programme held at the St. Teresa's College here. The theme of the event, organised by the Bhoomitra Sena Club, Department of Zoology and NSS Unit 41, was 'Beat Plastic Pollution and Promote Renewable Energy'.

Ludhiana: Class 10 toppers step into DC's role for 1 day
Three bright minds of Ludhiana stepped into the world of public administration under the 'Ek Din, DC/SSP De Sang' initiative, on Tuesday. Class 10 toppers Mehakpreet Kaur, Sanyam Jindal, and Yusana got the opportunity to spend a day with Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, gaining a first-hand look at the daily workings of the district administration. The trio, Mehakpreet from Government High School, Ghungrali Rajputan, with a score of 97.85%, Sanyam from Government High School, Kakowal, who scored 96.92%, and Yusana from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road, with 96.77%, were welcomed by the DC over breakfast. Sharing his journey from a modest background in Jind, Haryana, to becoming an IAS officer, Himanshu Jain urged the students to dream big, stay focused, and never resort to shortcuts. He emphasised that discipline and consistency are key to turning aspirations into achievements. The students then accompanied DC to his office, where they observed how different departments work in coordination to keep the district running. From handling public grievances to supervising development projects and managing crises, like the recent blackout in Ludhiana, the students were given a complete tour of the DC's responsibilities and decision-making processes. They were also taken through various branches of the district office to understand how government departments function on the ground. Their journey continued with visits to important institutions such as the district bureau of employment & enterprises (DBEE), Bal Bhawan, and the Red Cross Office. At each location, the students interacted with officials and learned how these bodies support employment, child welfare, and social services. A special lunch was also organised, where assistant commissioner Payal Goyal joined in to inspire the young achievers through her own experience in public service. Mehakpreet called the day 'truly exciting' and said it strengthened her desire to give back to society. Sanyam shared that the exposure has encouraged him to consider a future in public service, while Yusana said the visit gave her a deeper understanding of governance and inspired her to aim higher.

Children return to schools amid a festive mood in Ernakulam
Hundreds of children were accorded a colourful reception on the occasion of the start of the new academic year across schools in Ernakulam on Monday (June 2). Songs, dance performances, distribution of gifts, sweets, and flowers turned the 'Praveshanolsavam' into a festive mood. Although a few tiny tots broke into tears amid the new surroundings, the teachers and non-teaching staff lost no time in consoling them, as evident from the scenes witnessed in several schools on the first day of the new academic year. At the Government Girls' Lower Primary School, Ernakulam, the children were welcomed with colourful caps made out of chart paper. The senior students were also around to ensure that the younger students remained happy on the inaugural day. The Government High School at West Kadungalloor near Aluva wore a festive look as the district-level 'Praveshanolsavam' was held on the campus. Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve, who inaugurated the programme, said that the new curriculum will equip the children to tackle the challenges in life beyond the knowledge gathered from textbooks. The inclusion of topics such as good habits, the importance of cleanliness, and the ill effects of drugs will enable them to become responsible citizens, he said. Sethu, the author, who spoke on the occasion, said that learning one's mother language will unite humanity. The learning of mother tongue cannot be set aside in our educational system, he said. Name slips with messages related to cleanliness were distributed among the students as part of a campaign by the Suchitwa Mission. Parvathy Gopakumar, Assistant Collector, Ernakulam, who inaugurated the 'Praveshanolsavam' at the St. Joseph U.P. School, urged the children to face the challenges in their lives as part of the journey ahead. 'If you can overcome these challenges, you will be able to move forward with courage,' she said. Anthony Asanparambil, Chairperson of the Maradu Municipality, inaugurated the Thrippunithura sub-district programme held at the Government Lower Primary School in Mangayil. Children were welcomed to the campus with colourful balloons and sweets.
