Ludhiana: Class 10 toppers step into DC's role for 1 day
The trio, Mehakpreet from Government High School, Ghungrali Rajputan, with a score of 97.85%, Sanyam from Government High School, Kakowal, who scored 96.92%, and Yusana from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road, with 96.77%, were welcomed by the DC over breakfast. Sharing his journey from a modest background in Jind, Haryana, to becoming an IAS officer, Himanshu Jain urged the students to dream big, stay focused, and never resort to shortcuts. He emphasised that discipline and consistency are key to turning aspirations into achievements.
The students then accompanied DC to his office, where they observed how different departments work in coordination to keep the district running. From handling public grievances to supervising development projects and managing crises, like the recent blackout in Ludhiana, the students were given a complete tour of the DC's responsibilities and decision-making processes. They were also taken through various branches of the district office to understand how government departments function on the ground.
Their journey continued with visits to important institutions such as the district bureau of employment & enterprises (DBEE), Bal Bhawan, and the Red Cross Office. At each location, the students interacted with officials and learned how these bodies support employment, child welfare, and social services. A special lunch was also organised, where assistant commissioner Payal Goyal joined in to inspire the young achievers through her own experience in public service.
Mehakpreet called the day 'truly exciting' and said it strengthened her desire to give back to society. Sanyam shared that the exposure has encouraged him to consider a future in public service, while Yusana said the visit gave her a deeper understanding of governance and inspired her to aim higher.

Assam Government Evicts 309 Families From 23 Hectares Of Land
Tezpur: The Assam government on Sunday began an eviction drive in Biswanath district, displacing 309 families, officials said. The eviction drive was started in the morning to clear encroachment on nearly 175 bigha or 23 hectare of land in the Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) in Japariguri, they said. "The eviction drive is going on peacefully. There were 309 families who had encroached on 175 bigha of land. Notices were issued to them on August 1 to vacate the areas within 15 days," District Commissioner Simanta Kumar Das said. He said all the families have already left the area, and many of them had dismantled their houses. "We demolished the remaining houses. There was also one big tea garden. That is being dismantled now for the forestation drive later," he said. The DC said 600 security personnel were deployed, and 20 excavators, along with dozens of tractors, were used during the eviction drive. The encroachers were mostly from the Bengali-speaking Muslim community, another official said. Visiting the site, All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) General Secretary Kuddus Ali Sarkar alleged that the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has been evicting people in an "inhuman manner". "We demand an immediate halt to the eviction drive. Unless people are rehabilitated properly, no eviction should take place," he said. Supporting the state government's steps to evict encroachments on public land, several ethnic organisations have started 'Miya Kheda Andolan' (movement to drive out Miyas) in the state. 'Miya' is originally a pejorative term used for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam, and the non-Bengali-speaking people generally identify them as Bangladeshi immigrants. In recent years, activists from the community have started adopting this term as a gesture of defiance. In his Independence Day speech, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that "aggression" has changed the demography of lower and central Assam, and now efforts are being made for it in upper and north Assam, in an apparent reference to the community.

CM Siddaramaiah to launch infra projects in Belagavi next month: Minister Jarkiholi
Advt District minister Satish Jarkiholi announced that chief minister Siddaramaiah will lay the foundation stone for several key infrastructure projects in Belagavi next month. These include a Rs 200 crore flyover, a Rs 55 crore deputy commissioner's office complex, and a Rs 10 crore Patrika Bhavan for the media media persons on Friday, Jarkiholi detailed the scope of the flyover project, which will span 4.5 km from Sankam Hotel in Gandhi Nagar to Bogarves, passing through Ashok Circle, RTO Circle, Channamma Circle, and College Road. "The new DC's office will preserve heritage structures, while non-heritage buildings will be demolished. Additionally, a three-storey Patrika Bhavan will be constructed at Jadhav Nagar," he commissioner Mohammad Roshan presented detailed plans and maps of the proposed projects to the media. Jarkiholi also highlighted the urgent need for a new district stadium, as the existing facility will soon revert to the KLE Society upon completion of its lease period. "The new stadium will be built near Kanabaragi, with Rs 20 crore sanctioned in the first phase. We aim to have it ready by next Independence Day," he minister confirmed that CM Siddaramaiah will not only launch new projects but also inaugurate several completed ones, including those initiated during his previous tenure. Regarding the development of the Renuka Yallamma temple in Savadatti, Jarkiholi said the state govt has already sanctioned ₹215 crore for its comprehensive development. Tourism minister HK Patil is overseeing the progress of the project.

Youth Urged to Strengthen Democracy at Aija Independence Day Celebrations
Gadwal: The 79th Independence Day celebrations were held with patriotic fervor at ZPHS (Boys) Government High School in Aija. The national flag was ceremoniously hoisted during a grand program attended by students, teachers, and local dignitaries. The chief guests for the occasion were former BJP Jogulamba Gadwal District President S. Ramachandra Reddy and Aija Town BJP President Kampati Bhagat Reddy. Extending greetings to the gathering, Ramachandra Reddy said, > 'Every Indian today enjoys the rights and privileges that come with freedom. But this freedom was earned through the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country.
