IRCTC case: Delhi court adjourns order on framing of charges against Lalu Prasad, relatives till August 5
On May 29, the court reserved its order after the arguments were concluded on the aspect of charge. Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav have refuted corruption and other charges levelled against them by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case. The charges also include criminal conspiracy and cheating, and carry a maximum jail term of seven years.

The three claimed before the court through their lawyer that the CBI lacked evidence to prosecute them. Prasad, who was the Railway Minister during the UPA-I government, earlier questioned the validity of sanctions obtained by the CBI to prosecute him.
The agency told the court on February 28 that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the accused persons. The case is linked to alleged irregularities in the grant of operational contracts of two Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) hotels to a private firm.

According to the CBI charge sheet, a conspiracy was hatched between 2004 and 2014 in pursuance of which BNR hotels of the Indian Railways located in Puri and Ranchi were first transferred to the IRCTC. They were later leased to the Patna-based Sujata Hotels Private Limited for operations and maintenance.
The tender process, the CBI alleged, was rigged and manipulated and the conditions were tweaked to help the private party — Sujata Hotels.
The charge sheet also names former group general managers of IRCTC V.K. Asthana and R.K. Goyal and Vijay Kochhar and Vinay Kochhar, both directors of Sujata Hotels and owners of Chanakya Hotel.
Delight Marketing Company, now known as Lara Projects, and Sujata Hotels have also been named as accused in the charge sheet.

Multiple checkpoints have been strategically established across the hill and valley districts, on the national highways, to ensure essential supplies of food and medicines. These combined efforts alongside community outreach are steadily dismantling armed networks, curbing extortion and restoring civil order, the Governor added. "Further, several initiatives are being taken to ensure the displaced people regain hope and skills. Dialogue is underway with civil society organisations from Meitei, Kuki-Zo and Naga communities for voluntary resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and inclusive safety guarantees," Mr. Bhalla said. Manipur has been under the President's rule since February 13 this year after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post and the assembly was put under animated suspension. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kukis in Manipur since May, 2023.

Delhi court denies bail to businessman in ₹48,000 crore PMLA fraud case
Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has rejected the bail plea of businessman Harsatinder Pal Singh Hayer, accused in a money laundering case linked with the alleged cheating of investors to the tune of ₹48,000 crore. Hayer, the son-in-law of the late Nirmal Singh Bhangu, is one of the accused in the case linked to PACL. He is on bail granted by the Delhi High Court in a related case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Special Judge (CBI) Jagdish Kumar rejected Hayer's bail plea in the money laundering case in view of the nature of allegations levelled against him. The court observed that the allegations against Hayer are that he has committed a white-collar economic offence involving the misappropriation of hard-earned money of gullible investors. "The gullible investors were allegedly duped to the tune of about ₹48,000 crores. The economic offences are considered grave in nature," the Special Judge stated in the order passed on July 25. The court also noted that the accused had allegedly attempted to destroy electronic evidence. "Although the trial of the case will take considerable time, considering the allegations against the accused and his role, I deem that he is not entitled to relief for enlarging him on bail. The application for grant of bail to the applicant/accused is dismissed accordingly," the order stated. During the hearing, the counsel for the accused, Harsatinder Pal Singh Hayer, argued that he had been in custody for about four months and that the investigation against him had been completed. So his further custody is not required. He also argued that Hayer was not the Director of any company which has allegedly collected money from gullible investors. He further contended that accused was not a guilty mind or knowledge that the amount infused in Australian companies were collected illegally hence it cannot be presumed that Hayer was having knowledge of the same being collected by illegal means. However, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), represented by Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Naveen Kumar Matta and Mohd. Faizan, opposed the bail plea. ED submitted that Hayer is the son-in-law of Shri Nirmal Singh Bhangoo, and he was also one of the Directors of the two Australian Companies, namely M/s Pearls Australasia Pty Ltd from February 2012 to January 2016, and M/s Australasia Mirage I-Pty Ltd from 13.02.2012 to 14.08.2014. These are the companies to which POCs, generated by duping gullible investors, were diverted via M/S. PIPL, an associate company of M/s. PACL, ED argued. The ED also argued that Hayder had deliberately not disclosed the properties being purchased from the proceeds of crime being layered through PACL and its associated entities, either in his personal account or in the accounts of companies of which he was a director. Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) for ED also argued that Hayer is one of the Directors of M/s Pearls Australasia Pty Ltd and M/s Australasia Mirage I-Pty Ltd, in which ₹657.18 Crore was infused. It was further argued that a FIR registered at Police Station Zira, Punjab in 2020 and through investigation of that FIR, facts were revealed that Hayer was involved in the sale and purchase of properties being acquired from the proceeds of crime laid by PACL.

MBBS student dies by suicide in Udaipur over ‘mental harassment' by college staff, sparks protest
Protests broke out at a dental college campus in Udaipur after a student died by suicide, accusing the college staff of mental harassment. Students from the college staged a protest demanding action and accusing the administration of indulging in unfair practices.(X) Sweta Singh, who was pursuing Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the Pacific Dental College in Udaipur, was found dead in her hostel room on Thursday night, news agency PTI reported. She was a final-year BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) student from Jammu and Kashmir. The student was found around 11 pm by her roommate and rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead. The hostel authorities and police were then alerted about the incident. Following the incident, students from the college staged a protest demanding action and accusing the administration of indulging in unfair practices. Suicide note claims harassment by staff A note recovered from her hostel room stated that she had been mentally harassed by the college staff members. It mentioned irregularities in the exam schedules, accused the college of arbitrarily failing students and making repeated monetary demands, India Today reported. The note further alleged that students who were unable to pay faced pressure by the college administration. In a video which has surfaced online, students from the college can be seen protesting the incident outside the college gate, while raising slogans and giving calls for justice. During the protest march, the students blocked the road outside the college, demanding action against the members of staff who had been mentioned in the note. The director of the college held talks with the students, assuring them of strict action against those found responsible, NDTV reported. 'The college management is also addressing the situation and will terminate the staff members involved,' the director said. Police personnel from the Sukher station also arrived at the college campus to try to disperse the gathering, the students continued their protest. The case is currently under investigation. SHO Sukher Police Station Ravindra Charan said the deceased's body has been transferred to a mortuary, and the post-mortem will be conducted after the arrival of her family members. Discussing suicides can be triggering for some. However, suicides are preventable.
