French striker Olivier Giroud parts ways with MLS club LAFC after disappointing year
The 38-year-old Giroud and LAFC announced the decision on Friday on social media. He will play in his final match on Sunday night at home against Vancouver.
After scoring only five goals in 37 matches for LAFC, Giroud will become a free agent after his departure. He is widely expected to join Lille, which finished fifth in the French league last season, on a free transfer.
'I want to thank all of the fans, my teammates and the staff at LAFC for making this an enjoyable stop in my career,' Giroud said in a statement. 'I am happy to have played a part in the success of LAFC. From winning a trophy last season to participating in the Club World Cup, this has been a great experience in LA for me and my family.'
Giroud joined LAFC in July 2024 as a designated player after a long European career highlighted by prolific tenures with Arsenal and Chelsea. The top goal-scorer in the history of France's national team was expected to provide dynamic offense alongside MLS stars and fellow Frenchmen Denis Bouanga and Hugo Lloris.
Instead, Giroud clearly struggled to adapt to the MLS game and to LAFC's counter-attacking style under coach Steve Cherundolo. LAFC also failed to figure out ways to involve Giroud in the offense consistently, unable to provide service to one of the sport's most dangerous finishers earlier in his career.
Giroud usually played as a substitute for LAFC, and he didn't score his first MLS goal until last April 19. He did find the net in big moments, scoring in the US Open Cup final last season and in the Leagues Cup final.
'Olivier has been an exemplary professional during his time at LAFC,' general manager John Thorrington said. 'He brought humility and a winning mentality that helped elevate everyone around him. Olivier has been a tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field. We are grateful for his contributions.'
LAFC is suddenly a team in full transition after a winless three-game run at the Club World Cup earlier this month. Cherundolo already has announced he will leave the club to move back to Germany after the season, and LAFC could be down to Bouanga as its only designated player by next month.
LAFC added Dutch winger Javairô Dilrosun on loan from Club América earlier this month, but the loan is only through July 24. Dilrosun replaced Cengiz Ünder, whose disappointing MLS tenure ended this month.
LAFC's lengthy pursuit of Antoine Griezmann also came up fruitless earlier this month when the French star extended his contract with Atlético Madrid through 2027.
LAFC (7-4-5) still sits sixth in the Western Conference standings with two or three games in hand on every club above it, and it has an infusion of cash from beating América in a play-in match to reach the Club World Cup.

The recent tour to Europe with India 'A' was a shot in the arm. 'It instilled fresh hope for India comeback for me. It's going to be two years since I last wore the India colours and there've been a lot of learnings for me in this tour, which had a combination of young players and those who have played for India,' Karthi told Hockey India before the squad was announced. Speaking about his own game, Karthi said, 'There have been some specific inputs that Craig (Fulton) has given me and also Cosma, our Analytical Coach, has provided valuable inputs for my game particularly on off-the-ball tactics. I've been implementing this in my game and look forward to breaking into the India side again,' stated The four-match Tour of Australia is from 15th August to 21st August in Perth while the Asia Cup starts on 29th August. In goal, there are no changes with Krishan Pathak and Suraj Karkera retaining their spots. The other defenders in the squad are Sumit, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Amit Rohidas, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Jugraj Singh while Karnataka's Poovanna CB comes in as a fresh face. Young Rajinder Singh, who is often likened to stalwart former India Captain Sardar Singh, will feature among the midfielders along with Raj Kumar Pal, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Rabichandra Singh Moirangthem, and Vishnu Kant Singh. Speaking about the importance of this Tour ahead of the Asia Cup, Chief Coach Craig Fulton said, 'We are heading to Perth Australia to sharpen up ahead of the Asia Cup in Bihar. The focus will be on improving our physical conditioning and technical execution through quality training and warm up matches.' Fulton also spoke about testing youngsters in the squad and giving them the exposure ahead of important outings. He said, 'We have brought in some younger players to give them valuable exposure and test combinations under pressure. This camp is a key part of our preparation and a chance to build individual and team momentum before competing at home.' The Indian Team will leave for Australia on 8th August from Bengaluru where they are currently training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) campus.

Wrestling World Championship selection trials: Aman Sehrawat headlines men's squad
Paris Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat was hardly challenged in the World Championship selection trials while Sujeet Kalkal put on display tremendous counter-attacking skills to lock his place in the national side in the men's freestyle 65kg weight category, here on Monday. Next month's World Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, will be Sehrawat's only second international event since he won a bronze in the French capital in 2024. The 22-year old Sehrawat settled for a bronze at the Mongolia Ranking Series event in June to make a comeback to competitive wrestling. On Monday, he looked sharper than what was on show in Mongolia. The only points he lost to Sumit in his opening bout were push-out points as his double-leg attacks gave him complete control of the match. He won by technical superiority within the first period. The 57kg final against Rahul also turned out to be a lopsided affair as Sehrawat again won by technical superiority and this time without conceding a point. Sehrawat had Rahul in a head-lock position in the beginning, getting on the scoreboard with a push-out point. A right leg-attack led to a two-pointer takedown. His moves were clear and he did not let Rahul make any move on him, finishing the final with authority. 'I feel I am back to my best. There was a vacuum in the men's 65 kg class since star wrestler Bajrang Punia stopped competing in the category and Kalkal is gradually shaping well to make this weight class his own. His mat movement and speed has improved a lot. 'We have worked on his strength in the last one year. With age, he has got power as well. He had an ankle injury some time back and he used the time to improve on his strength,' said his father and coach, Dayanand Kalkal. Mukul Dahiya, who qualified for the U20 World Championship, succeeded in making the senior squad too in the 86kg category. His wins over Sachin Jaglan (technical superiority) and Ashish (7-2) showed that he will be a good prospect for India in future. Also making an impression was Haryana's Amit, who trains at Army Sports Institute in Pune. His fast-paced moves and tremendous movement on the mat got him a place in the Indian side in the 79kg category. His four-pointers against Parvinder were a delight to watch. He suffered a knee injury in the final against Services' Chander Mohan but prevailed 9-6. Surprisingly, Chander Mohan did not attack much despite seeing that his rival was struggling to move after twisting his left knee. The 74kg category was a one-bout affair with only two entries received. Jaideep claimed a place with a 12-6 win despite suffering a bad knee injury. Rohit, who used to compete in 65kg, sealed his place in the 70kg, beating Sidharth (6-2), and Sagar (6-1). He got a walkover from Ashwani. Talented Udit (61kg), Vickey (97kg) and Rajat (125kg) were the other wrestlers to make the freestyle squad. 'Sujeet beat Russian and Kazakhstan wrestlers in Hungary. He has come up very fast. He clears tricky bouts like Sushil used to do. He will be an Olympic medal contender,' said India coach Vinod Kumar. 'Udit is also emerging fast. He has transitioned well from juniors to senior level. He is young, and does not get intimidated by big names. In the coming years he will also be a great prospect for India,' he added.
