India bonds stuck in narrow range despite rise in US peers

Economic Times08-07-2025
Indian government bonds traded in a narrow range early on Tuesday as markets shrugged off a rise in U.S. Treasury yields and awaited a firm domestic catalyst to drive further moves.
ADVERTISEMENT Bond prices move inversely to yields.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.2943% as on 9:45 a.m. IST, after closing at 6.2933% on Monday.
"There are literally no cues for traders to take the yields in any direction, so this week should see light trading," the trader said. Treasury yields rose on Monday as President Donald Trump announced tariffs on numerous trading partners, including a 25% levy on imports from Japan and South Korea beginning August 1.
Yields have been on an uptrend as traders pared bets on the quantum of rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year after jobs data for June on Thursday showed employers added more jobs than economists had forecast.
ADVERTISEMENT Meanwhile, oil prices also rise as signs of strong demand outweighed the impact from a higher-than-expected output hike for August from Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies.
Back home, traders continue to eye the next action from the Reserve Bank of India on liquidity management, as banking system liquidity surplus continues to remain elevated, with overnight rates moving below the floor of the monetary policy corridor. RATES India's overnight index swap rates did not see any large activity, as traders eye more cues.
ADVERTISEMENT The one-year OIS rate and the two-year OIS rate were not yet traded after ending at 5.51% and 5.48%. The liquid five-year was marginally higher at 5.69%.

India's long-term growth story intact, market outlook constructive: Sumit Bhatnagar

"In terms of sector preferences, we're increasingly positive on the consumption theme. We believe consumption is at an inflection point, driven by improvements in both rural and urban demand. Rural consumption is benefiting from a good monsoon so far, healthy reservoir levels, and higher MSPs. This should lead to a continued pickup in rural economic activity," says Sumit Bhatnagar, Fund Manager, LIC MF. ADVERTISEMENT At present, we consider India to be a safe haven amid global tariff uncertainty. But one thing is certain — Trump's tariff-related moves and the associated uncertainties are likely to continue growing. What is your short- and long-term perspective on the domestic markets? Sumit Bhatnagar: As far as global markets are concerned, we've been witnessing intermittent bouts of volatility, driven by both economic and geopolitical factors. Regarding Trump, this issue has been ongoing for the last two to three months. So, a large part of it is already priced in, barring some short-term surprises that may arise from his announcements related to countries like Mexico or Brazil. However, when it comes to India, the outlook remains positive. Domestically, we are constructive on Indian markets simply because we expect economic activity to pick up. Along with that, we anticipate a corresponding improvement in corporate earnings — supported by lower interest rates, ample liquidity, and valuations that are more or less in the fair zone, especially when looking at the broader indices. From a medium- to long-term perspective, India remains very well-positioned. So, you're strongly backing the India growth story. But having said that, I'd like to know about your sector-specific strategies. There's been a lot of rotation happening — so what's on your radar? Which sectors are the hits and misses for you? Sumit Bhatnagar: In terms of sector preferences, we're increasingly positive on the consumption theme. We believe consumption is at an inflection point, driven by improvements in both rural and urban demand. Rural consumption is benefiting from a good monsoon so far, healthy reservoir levels, and higher MSPs. This should lead to a continued pickup in rural economic activity. Additionally, tax cuts that have already been implemented are expected to play out over the next six to nine months. On top of that, regulatory rollbacks by the RBI for lending institutions, lower interest rates, and ample liquidity should also support consumption growth. ADVERTISEMENT Looking ahead, the upcoming pay commissions will be a key driver as well. The central pay commission is due next year, followed by state pay commissions the year after — together putting nearly ₹3 lakh crore into the hands of consumers. There is also talk of GST rationalisation in the FMCG space, which should provide an incremental of this suggests that after five years of underperformance, FMCG may be at the start of a recovery. While this quarter's numbers may be muted, our outlook for the next two to three years is positive. Accordingly, we've increased our exposure to consumption in our portfolios. ADVERTISEMENT We've just seen the WPI numbers come in at -0.13%, which puts us in deflationary territory for wholesale prices. CPI, too, remains well below the 4% benchmark. In the current scenario — where crude is stable around $70 and the interest rate trajectory is relatively clear — which sectors do you see getting re-rated, and where do you expect de-rating? Sumit Bhatnagar: When it comes to re-rating, we are optimistic about sectors like cement and consumption. In cement, if pricing holds and demand picks up post-monsoon in the second half, we could see earnings improve. As discussed earlier, we also expect a significant pickup in consumption, both rural and urban, in the second half of the two sectors — cement and consumption — are where we foresee meaningful re-rating going forward. ADVERTISEMENT On the other hand, sectors exposed to global dynamics, like IT and metals, could face de-rating. This would be driven by continued global uncertainty and economic weakness in key markets such as the US, China, and Japan — which are critical drivers of demand for commodities like metals. So, those would be the sectors where we see potential for de-rating. (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel)

Dollar holds near 3-week high before CPI; bitcoin eases from record peak

TOKYO (Reuters) -The dollar hovered near a three-week high versus major peers on Tuesday as traders awaited the release of U.S. inflation data later in the day that could provide clues on the path for monetary policy. The U.S. currency was also buoyed by elevated Treasury yields, with investors weighing a potential exit of Jerome Powell from the Federal Reserve as President Donald Trump continued his criticism of the central bank chairman. Currencies showed little reaction to data showing China's economy grew 5.2% last quarter, slightly topping analysts' forecasts. Bitcoin drifted further from Monday's all-time peak of $123,153.22 following a seven-day, 14% surge as investors bet on long-sought legislative policy wins for the cryptocurrency industry this week. It was changing hands at around $117,550 as of 0520 GMT. The dollar was little changed at 147.62 yen, after earlier rising to the highest since June 23 at 147.89 yen. The dollar index, which tracks the currency against the yen, euro and four other major rivals, eased slightly to 98.003, not far below the overnight peak of 98.136, the highest since June 25. The euro edged up to $1.1681, after dipping to $1.1650 on Monday for the first time since June 25. Fed Chair Powell has said he expects inflation to increase this summer as a result of tariffs, which is seen keeping the U.S. central bank on hold until later in the year. Economists polled by Reuters expect headline inflation to increase to 2.7% on an annual basis, up from 2.4% the prior month. Core inflation is expected to rise to 3.0%, from 2.8%. "Should inflation fail to materialise or remain steady, questions may arise regarding the Fed's recent decision not to cut rates, potentially intensifying calls for monetary easing," James Kniveton, senior corporate FX dealer at Convera, wrote in a client note. "Calls from the White House for leadership changes at the Fed may increase." Trump on Monday renewed his attacks on Powell, saying interest rates should be at 1% or lower, rather than the 4.25% to 4.50% range the Fed has kept the key rate at so far this year. Fed funds futures traders have been pricing in about 50 basis points of interest rate cuts by year-end, with the first quarter-point reduction seen as likely in September. "If Powell leaves, we expect the (U.S. Treasury yield) curve to steepen sharply, with the short-end factoring in front-loaded rates cuts," DBS analysts wrote in a note. "Meanwhile, the loss of confidence in price stability should translate into sharply higher 10-year and 30-year yields." China's economic growth topped market forecasts in the second quarter - even as it slowed slightly from the prior three months - in a sign of resilience against U.S. tariffs. At the same time, analysts warned of underlying weakness and rising risks later in the year that will ramp up pressure on Beijing to roll out more stimulus. The Chinese yuan weakened slightly to 7.1766 per dollar in offshore trading. The Aussie was steady at $0.6548. (Reporting by Kevin Buckland; Editing by Sonali Paul and Lincoln Feast.)
