🎥 OTD: Toni Kroos scores one of the best ever last-gasp goals
Nothing beats the feeling of scoring a dramatic winning goal deep in added time.
But Toni Kroos has a strong claim for one of the most emphatic in Germany's smash-and-grab win over Sweden during the 2018 World Cup group stage.

The reigning world champions looked set for an ignominious early exit after losing their opening encounter to Mexico before facing Janne Andersson's side in Sochi.
Things looked ominous at the Fisht Stadium as Die Mannschaft were being held to a 1-1 draw which would leave the fate of their Group F campaign out of their hands.
A free kick from an acute angle represented one last throw of the dice with the five minutes' added time all but up after Jimmy Durmaz brought down Timo Werner.
What followed became the stuff of legend.
Unfortunately for Kroos, his heroics could not prevent Joachim Löw's side from crashing out of the tournament as they lost their next game to South Korea.

But the Real Madrid man's spectacular effort still earned a place in World Cup history.

Most Gold Cup Goals: USA's Malik Tillman Has Inside Track In Golden Boot Race
Coming into the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Malik Tillman had only scored once in his first 19 appearances for the U.S. men's national team. He's now scored three times in as many games at the tournament, putting him in a prime spot to finish as the top goalscorer if the U.S. makes a deep run. Tillman has been a breakout star for the USMNT at the Gold Cup, which has solidified his case for being in next year's World Cup squad for Mauricio Pochettino. "What a talented player. I'm so pleased with him. So pleased. He's a lovely guy, and he's started to find himself. The team is much better when he's involved in the game," Pochettino said about Tillman after scoring in the USMNT's 2-1 win over Haiti. Next up for the U.S. team is a quarterfinal clash with Costa Rica, which advanced to knockout round thanks to Manfred Ugalde – who shares the goals lead with Tillman and Mexico's Cesar Montes. But Los Ticos will be without Ugalde due to yellow card accumulation for the quarterfinal match against the USMNT. That means Tillman can take in the inside track for the Golden Boot if he continues scoring. Here's how the race for the Gold Cup Golden Boot is shaking out. You can also find full stats here: Player Country Goals Manfred Ugalde CRC 3 César Montes MEX 3 Malik Tillman USA 3 Josimar Alcocer CRC 2 Patrick Agyemang USA 2 Who has scored the most Gold Cup goals ever? Landon Donovan has the most goals scored ever in Gold Cup history. With 18 goals across six editions of the tournament played, he leads fellow U.S. legend Clint Dempsey (15 goals in 5 tournaments) in the all-time table. Two former Mexico greats (Luis Roberto 'Zaguinho' Alves and Andres Guardado) have 12 goals apiece. Panama's Blas Perez rounds out the top-five with 11 goals. Who has scored the most Gold Cup goals in a single tournament? Luis Roberto 'Zaguinho' Alves scored an incredible 11 goals at the 1993 Gold Cup. Seven of those came in a 9-0 win over Martinique. Three players are tied in second place with seven goals in a single tournament – Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez (2011), Clint Dempsey (2015), and Jesus Ferreira (2023). Who are the all-time USMNT goal scorers? Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey are co-leaders on the all-time U.S. list (57 goals). Jozy Altidore (42), Eric Wynalda (34), and Christian Pulisic (32) round out the top five on the list. Pulisic, who is sitting out the 2025 Gold Cup, is the only active player on the top-10 list for the U.S. men's team. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Fifa considers options for Iran at 2026 World Cup after conflict with hosts US

Iran have qualified for their fourth consecutive World Cup but face playing in the US which has imposed a travel ban on their citizens. Photograph: Abedin Taherkenareh/EPA Fifa is facing new questions over the increasingly fraught World Cup next year, with the issue of how to treat Iran while the country is involved in a conflict with the co-host the US. There are no provisions within Fifa's regulations to prevent Iran from playing their group matches in the US, despite the country being subject to military action by the Trump administration and Iranian citizens being under a travel ban that prevents them from entering the country. The ban contains an exemption that could apply to players, staff or associated families with teams at the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Advertisement Iran, who faced USA in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, qualified in March for their fourth consecutive World Cup. Although 2026 is also being hosted by Canada and Mexico, only by being given a specific slot in group A could Iran avoid playing in the US, with their matches then taking place in Mexico. Related: Fifa again under scrutiny for World Cup's increased carbon footprint If Iran won that group they would stay in Mexico for their last-32 game and any last-16 match. Should they go further – and they have never reached a World Cup knockout game – they would then play in the US. Fifa did not respond on Monday to a request for comment from the Guardian and will likely be considering its options before the World Cup draw, which is due to take place in December. The decision will be a difficult one for its president, Gianni Infantino, who has associated himself closely with President Donald Trump, who authorised the use of US bombs on Iranian nuclear sites last weekend. Advertisement Infantino and the Fifa Council will have the final say on inclusion in the competition and the makeup of the draw, but the organising committee for Fifa competitions will be expected to have input. The committee has members from Canada, Mexico and Iran, and its chair is Uefa's president, Aleksander Ceferin. In 2022, his organisation announced that Ukraine and Belarus would be kept apart in Uefa competition draws, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and his action may provide an example for Fifa to follow. Before the World Cup draw in Qatar, the agreed draw constraints included limitations on where teams could be selected but this related only to a 'general principle' that no more than one team from each confederation (excluding Europe) should appear in a given group.

Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez signs for Crystal Palace from PSV Eindhoven
Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez has joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. The 32-year-old, who has served as Argentina's backup goalkeeper throughout their World Cup qualification campaign, will officially join the Eagles on July 1st. Advertisement Palace had been in discussions with Benítez for several months, but he opted to wait until the conclusion of the Eredivisie season – out of respect for PSV, who were in a title race with Ajax – before committing to the south Londoners. Benítez has been recruited as an understudy to FA Cup winner Dean Henderson. However, the keeper is convinced he can unseat Henderson from the No. 1 spot as he aims to retain his place in the Argentina squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. During three seasons at PSV, Benítez made 134 appearances, winning consecutive Eredivisie titles in 2024 and 2025, the KNVB Cup in 2023, and two Johan Cruyff Shields in 2022 and 2023. He kept 43 clean sheets in all competitions during his time in Eindhoven and featured 27 times in the UEFA Champions League. (Image: PA) Palace are set to play European football for the first time in their history next season, pending final confirmation from UEFA's Club Financial Control Body. And Benítez is expected to play a key role in the club's continental campaign, bringing valuable European experience to the squad. Advertisement His arrival marks renewed competition in the goalkeeping department. Last season, Dean Henderson played every minute of Crystal Palace's Premier League campaign – the first time a goalkeeper has done so since the club's promotion in 2013. Palace Chairman Steve Parish said: 'Walter is an excellent addition to our squad, bringing further quality, experience and competition to our goalkeeping department alongside Dean and Remi. 'We look forward to welcoming Walter to South London next month as we continue our preparations towards what promises to be a busy season, competing on multiple fronts, in 2025/26.'
