Things looked ominous at the Fisht Stadium as Die Mannschaft were being held to a 1-1 draw which would leave the fate of their Group F campaign out of their hands.
A free kick from an acute angle represented one last throw of the dice with the five minutes' added time all but up after Jimmy Durmaz brought down Timo Werner.
What followed became the stuff of legend.
Unfortunately for Kroos, his heroics could not prevent Joachim Löw's side from crashing out of the tournament as they lost their next game to South Korea.

But the Real Madrid man's spectacular effort still earned a place in World Cup history.

There are no provisions within Fifa's regulations to prevent Iran from playing their group matches in the US, despite the country being subject to military action by the Trump administration and Iranian citizens being under a travel ban that prevents them from entering the country. The ban contains an exemption that could apply to players, staff or associated families with teams at the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Advertisement Iran, who faced USA in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, qualified in March for their fourth consecutive World Cup. Although 2026 is also being hosted by Canada and Mexico, only by being given a specific slot in group A could Iran avoid playing in the US, with their matches then taking place in Mexico. Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez has joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. The 32-year-old, who has served as Argentina's backup goalkeeper throughout their World Cup qualification campaign, will officially join the Eagles on July 1st.
