🎥 OTD: Toni Kroos scores one of the best ever last-gasp goals

🎥 OTD: Toni Kroos scores one of the best ever last-gasp goals Nothing beats the feeling of scoring a dramatic winning goal deep in added time. But Toni Kroos has a strong claim for one of the most emphatic in Germany's smash-and-grab win over Sweden during the 2018 World Cup group stage. Advertisement The reigning world champions looked set for an ignominious early exit after losing their opening encounter to Mexico before facing Janne Andersson's side in Sochi. Things looked ominous at the Fisht Stadium as Die Mannschaft were being held to a 1-1 draw which would leave the fate of their Group F campaign out of their hands. A free kick from an acute angle represented one last throw of the dice with the five minutes' added time all but up after Jimmy Durmaz brought down Timo Werner. What followed became the stuff of legend. Unfortunately for Kroos, his heroics could not prevent Joachim Löw's side from crashing out of the tournament as they lost their next game to South Korea. Löw: Good German Nations League showing can be boost for World Cup

Joachim Loew, Representative of the VfB Stuttgart speaks during the DFB Cup Handover. Sebastian Gollnow/dpa Germany can boost its chances to do well at next years's World Cup with a good showing at the upcoming Nations League finals, former national team coach Joachim Löw has said. Löw said at a German Football Federation (DFB) event that the World Cup doesn't start when it officially kicks off but rather one or two years in advance. Advertisement Germany play Portugal in the Nations League semi-finals on June 4 and then the match for third place or final four days later. The other teams are Euro 2024 champions Spain and last World Cup runners-up France. "It is important for the confidence and the development of a team to win games like these," Löw said. Löw, who coached Germany 2006-2021 and led them to the 2014 World Cup title, said that the Nations League has grown in prestige over the years. "For me, the Nations League at the beginning was a competition where you could try things out. But the Nations League has developed and become an important competition," Löw said. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann will announce his squad for the mini tournament on May 22.
