Léon Marchand tries to break his own 200 IM world record at the swim worlds in Singapore

SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand of France is out to break his own world record in Thursday's 200-meter individual medley at the swimming world championships in Singapore.
If you missed it,
Marchand only set the record
on Wednesday in the semifinals at the worlds — 1 minute, 52.69 seconds. That shattered the old mark of 1:54.00 held by American Ryan Lochte since 2011.
Of course, Marchand's victory is almost assured. The only question is by how much. A four-time gold medalist a year ago in the Paris Olympics, Marchand will share the stage on Day 5 with
Canada's Summer McIntosh
.
McIntosh will go for her third medal in Singapore, this time in the 200 freestyle. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia and American Regan Smith are the main rivals. She has already won gold in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle.
McIntosh is bidding for five individual gold medals in Singapore after winning three individual Olympic gold medals in Paris.
Yu Zidi, the 12-year-old Chinese swimmer, is the eighth-fastest qualifier in the field as she tries to reach the podium. She was fourth in the 200 IM.
Three other finals are on the day's program and the Americans have shots. The United States has won only three gold medals in Singapore with the team
battling a stomach bug
picked up in training camp in Thailand. Head coach Greg Meehan has suggested team health is improving.
In the men's 100 freestyle, American Jack Alexy and Romanian David Popovici were the quickest qualifiers. Popovici has already won the 200 free in Singapore. He was the gold medalist at 200 in Paris, and took bronze in the 100.
American Regan Smith has the quickest time in the 50 backstroke followed very closely by Lauren Cox of Britain, American Katharine Berkoff, and Wan Letian of China.
The last final of the day is the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay.

Taylor Fritz is looking every bit a US Open contender this summer. The American had a terrific grass-court season with two titles and a trip to the semifinals at Wimbledon, and he's now one of the favorites to win the 2025 Canadian Masters in Toronto. Fritz is -275 to beat Jiri Lehecka, who has endured an inconsistent season after starting the year off with a title in Brisbane. ATP Toronto: Fritz vs. Lehecka odds, predictions Lehecka looked like he was on his way to cracking the top 20 in the early stages of 2025. The native of Czechia won a title in Brisbane out of the gates this season, and then followed that up with a trip to the Round of 16 at the Australian Open. A few weeks later, Lehecka defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of ATP Doha, officially putting the tennis world on notice. Unfortunately, Lehecka's performance for the next chunk of the season was middling, but he did seem to find his game over the summer. Jiri Lehecka in action at the Canadian Masters. Getty Images Lehecka finished runner-up to Alcaraz at ATP London, beating Jack Draper in the semifinals and Alex de Minaur in the Round of 32. The 23-year-old was disappointing at Wimbledon, and then was ousted by de Minaur in the Round of 16 at ATP Washington, but overall, things are pointing in the right direction. Only more so after a couple of gritty wins at the Canadian Masters. Fritz was always going to be susceptible to an upset in Washington because of fatigue, and the way he lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was a shock, but he's yet to really put a foot wrong in Canada. He should be fresh and at his best on Sunday night, but Lehecka is playing at a level to provide a stiff test for the American. This should be a high-quality match, putting the Over 23.5 games on our radar for a play. Dodgers snap 18-inning scoreless drought to beat Rays 3-0 and win the series

With the Dodgers "all but a lock" to add a reliever before the trade deadline following Tanner Scott's injury, Eric Samulski assesses which arms could be in line for precious save opportunities. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Freddie Freeman scored one run and drove in another to snap Los Angeles' 18-inning scoreless drought and lead the Dodgers over the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Sunday. Andy Pages singled off Mason Englert (0-1) in the sixth to drive in Freddie Freeman, who extended his on-base streak to 18 games with a first-inning single and added another RBI single in the seventh to make it 2-0. He had three hits on the day and seven RBIs in the series, which the Dodgers won two games to one. Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored on Mookie Betts' sacrifice fly in the ninth. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7) held the Rays scoreless over 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and striking out six. Ben Casparius earned his second big-league save, coming in with the bases loaded in the ninth to get Yandy Diaz out. Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman left the game in the fifth with a right ankle sprain. Tampa Bay starter Joe Boyle held the Dodgers scoreless for five innings, working around three hits and two walks. He struck out two. Ohtani beat out a chopper for a single in the seventh and then stole second and third to be in position to score on Freeman's RBI single. 0-for-16. Mookie Betts went hitless in the series and is now hitless in four straight games. He was dropped out of the leadoff spot. Monday night in Los Angeles, the Dodgers send Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 3.98 ERA) to the mound against the Cardinals. The Rays will debut Adrian Houser (6-2, 2.10) against the Angels.

French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt wins women's Tour de France at her first attempt

CHATEL, France — French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt won the women's Tour de France at her first attempt on Sunday, launching an attack to clinch the final stage and increase her overnight lead. It gave Ferrand-Prévôt a resounding victory. She finished 3 minutes, 42 seconds ahead of 2023 champion Demi Vollering of the Netherlands and 4:09 clear of defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma of Poland. "After my Olympic title, I said I would try to win the Tour de France in the next three years," said the 33-year-old Ferrand-Prévôt, an Olympic champion in mountain biking at last year's Paris Games. "So here I am, the first (time)." There was little of the drama of last year's final day, which produced a four-second winning margin for the narrowest victory in the history of the women's and men's races. "My teammates worked super hard for me all week long. I just want to say thank you and congrats to them," said Ferrand-Prévôt, who rides for the Visma–Lease a Bike team. "I love you so much girls, and thank you for everything." Ferrand-Prévôt had put herself largely in control by winning Saturday's eighth and penultimate stage with an audacious solo breakaway on the last climb. That gave her an overnight lead of 2:37 seconds over Australian rider Sarah Gigante and 3:18 over Vollering. Sunday's ninth stage from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel was a 124-kilometer (77-mile) trek featuring three big mountain climbs. But Ferrand-Prévôt did not face any big attacks and instead launched one of her own with 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) left. The crowds cheered her all the way to the finish line and, moments later, the tears flowed as she lay on her back, exhausted but elated. Vollering was 20 seconds behind in second place and Niewiadoma followed in third place as they sprinted to the line. Earlier, Ferrand-Prévôt was with Gigante and a few others when they tackled the mammoth climb up Col de Joux Plane — an 11.6-kilometer grind with a gradient of 8.5%. Gigante is known to have trouble descending at speed and was dropped on the long downhill. She could not make the time up, especially with no teammates to help her, and lost her podium spot, finishing sixth overall. Having won Olympic gold and conquered the cobblestones of the Paris-Roubaix classic, Ferrand-Prévôt added another line to her glittering resumé with a Tour victory, 11 years after winning the world road race title.
