Luke Hodge makes staggering claim about Max Gawn after Simon Goodwin's sacking
But Goodwin's time at the Demons is officially over, after the coach was sacked after nine seasons on Tuesday. Discussing the situation on SEN radio, Hawthorn legend Hodge dropped a bombshell about what it could potentially mean for Gawn's future.
The skipper has played 244 games for the Dees since debuting in 2010, and never worn any other colours. But Hodge questioned what might occur should he not gel with the new coach.
'From the outside he will be a broken man because of the time and effort he has put into what has been created,' Hodge said. 'From afar their relationship looked a strong coach-captain relationship. There's going to be murmurs and tough conversations and his mindset now will be 'am I going to have a relationship with the next coach coming in, will I be able to lead as I am'?
'This is the hardest thing for an existing captain going from one coach to a new person that could turn the club upside down, and as a skipper you don't know where you stand. When did (Jack) Silvagni contemplate going to Collingwood? When the door was ajar and Collingwood said we might have a contract.
'Is this a door opening for Max Gawn? He would have had no thought of ever leaving Melbourne. They guided him as a young fella into this absolute star of our game. With a new coach coming in, is this his time to say, 'is there a premiership somewhere else for me to go and play?'. It won't be an easy decision for him, but he has to talk to the club who will want to keep him.'
The former Hawks captain said Gawn won't be the only Demons player affected. 'The new coach coming in might have other thoughts or want to develop a different system," he said. 'When you lose a coach, everyone on that list will be wondering what it means for them and their career moving forward? For younger players is an opportunity for the older players you wonder if you're in their plans.'
Garry Lyon's warning for next Melbourne Demons coach
John Longmire and Adam Simpson are being touted as the leading candidates to take over as Demons coach, with the former Swans and Eagles coaches boasting plenty of experience. Nathan Buckley and Ken Hinkley could also be options, while there's a plethora of good assistants floating around.

Speaking on SEN on Wednesday morning, Demons great Garry Lyon offered a word of warning to Longmire and the likes. 'I would say if you are serious about wanting to get back into footy then there's great opportunity at the football club," he said.
'But I'd also be very strong in my questioning of the off-field stability of the club and where that sits. President-elect Steven Smith would be the first man I'd want to hear from, and Paul Guerra. It's hard to get a handle on him because he hasn't started yet.
'They're the issues that any incoming coach would want to have a look at and then you start to put your mind to the playing list and questions about facilities. All those sorts of things come in to it. There's opportunity there for any coach.'

Beveridge responds to question about in-demand free agent after rival coach uproar
Luke Beveridge says interest from rival clubs in Carlton's Jack Silvagni is inevitable, but he's refused to divulge further details about the Western Bulldogs' pursuit of the player. It comes after Collingwood coach Craig McRae revealed details of a promising 'first date' he had with Silvagni after meeting with the out-of-contract Carlton star recently, prompting a swipe from Blues boss Michael Voss and Geelong coach Chris Scott. Voss and Scott both insisted the Magpies coach should have respected Silvagni's privacy by not going on public record about the meeting. They both pointed out the awkward situation it has created for third-generation Blues star Silvagni, who now has to walk back into the Carlton locker room alongside teammates who know he's thinking about leaving the club. The Magpies and Bulldogs have been the teams most heavily linked with a move for Silvagni, with reports Collingwood are ready to match Carlton's four year, $650,000 per season offer to the star defender. Silvagni is an unrestricted free agent meaning he can sign with any team during the upcoming window. And Beveridge admits every club's 'antenna' goes up when players of his calibre become available. But the Bulldogs coach is mindful about getting caught up in a similar situation to McRae by going public with the club's courting of Silvagni. Instead, Beveridge has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the Silvagni trade situation out of respect for the Carlton star and his own Bulldogs playing group. "I think with any free agent like Jack, every club's antenna is up," Beveridge told reporters on Thursday when asked about the Silvagni situation. "But I've always maintained the line of not talking about who we're chatting with behind the scenes, just purely out of respect for our playing group. "Some of our lads are still un-contracted, they don't need to be thinking too much about who might take their spot. And also probably out of respect for someone like Jack ... in that he's got to spend time at his current club, if he is planning to move on." The Bulldogs coach hit back at suggestions his stance on Silvagni was a bit hypocritical, considering he revealed earlier in the year how he met with Matt Rowell to try and convince the Gold Coast star to join the Dogs. Beveridge says the difference was he already knew Rowell planned on staying at the Suns when he made the meeting public record. "Everyone knew that we had met with Matthew because he was thinking of coming back to Melbourne," Beveridge said. But the Dogs coach accepted that their pursuit of the former No.1 pick had failed when he chose to reveal details of the meeting. RELATED: Max Gawn breaks silence on Simon Goodwin axing amid $1.2m fallout Abbey Holmes responds amid backlash over decision post-birth Eagles face decision as Victorian club 'not prepared' to pay Harley Reid Several AFL clubs competing for Jack Silvagni's signature Essendon coach Brad Scott also reportedly met with Silvagni at his home in Melbourne last week. But like Beveridge, the Bombers have refused to divulge details or provide comment on the situation. It's understood Essendon have yet to present a formal offer to Silvagni but the club is looking to bolster its defensive playing stocks and could land the Blues star without having to trade for a draft pick. Speaking about the Silvagni saga this week, Geelong coach Scott said this week it was naive to suggest clubs wouldn't expect some of their players to meet with rival players. And he said it was unrealistic to expect players to wait until October to speak to clubs about their future, giving them 'two weeks notice' when the trade window or free agency window was open. "I think most people in the footy industry know that players, especially with free agency coming in, they really have an obligation to do their research," he said. "It's not clubs chasing players... I don't think it's the clubs preying on these players."

Injuries shake up Wallabies' flyhalf options ahead of Rugby Championship
SYDNEY (AP) — Tom Lynagh's concussion and Noah Lolesio's neck injury leaves utility Ben Donaldson, 35-year-old James O'Connor or rookie Tane Edmed as Australia's flyhalf options for Rugby Championship tests in South Africa. Rugby Australia unveiled a 35-man squad Thursday for the two tests against the World Cup champion Springboks, making injury-enforced changes to the squad that won the third test in a 2-1 series loss to the British and Irish Lions. Edmed went on as a replacement in his one and only test to date — a narrow loss to Ireland last November — and wasn't in the Wallabies squad for the series against the Lions. O'Connor, a 64-test veteran who played for the Super Rugby-winning Crusaders last season, was in the wider Wallabies squad but not selected for matches. Donaldson went on as a replacement for Lynagh in the third test after the 22-year-old playmaker sustained a concussion from an illegal tackle from Lions hooker Dan Sheehan that resulted in a four-game suspension for the Irishman. An injury to Jake Gordon has delayed veteran scrumhalf Nic White's international retirement. White, regular finisher Tate McDermott and uncapped Ryan Lonergan were the scrumhalves picked for the squad to take on South Africa in two tests on Aug. 16 in Johannesburg and Aug. 23 in Cape Town. Lonergan is one of three uncapped players in the squad, along with winger Corey Toole and former New Zealand All Blacks prop Aidan Ross, who joined the Queensland Reds from the Chiefs following the Super Rugby final. Backrower Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, who played in three tour games against the Lions but wasn't part of the Wallabies set up, has returned to the top squad. 'It's pleasing to be able to keep the core of the group together, while also leaning on some depth and fresh bodies,:" Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said. 'We're very conscious of how difficult it is going to be, playing South Africa on their home turf over two consecutive weekends. 'The group has made some positive steps throughout the start of the test season but we all know there is a lot of hard work ahead of us.' ___ Australia squad: Forwards: Angus Bell, Nick Champion De Crespigny, Nick Frost, Langi Gleeson, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Josh Nasser, Zane Nonggorr, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Billy Pollard, Tom Robertson, Aidan Ross, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Will Skelton, James Slipper, Carlo Tizzano, Taniela Tupou, Rob Valetini, Jeremy Williams, Harry Wilson. Backs: Ben Donaldson, Tane Edmed, Josh Flook, Len Ikitau, Max Jorgensen, Andrew Kellaway, Ryan Lonergan, Tate McDermott, James O'Connor, Hunter Paisami, Dylan Pietsch, Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i, Corey Toole, Nic White, Tom Wright. ___ AP rugby:
