According to the Information Department (JaPen) director-general Julina Johan, the selection of Muar as the venue for the event is significant because of the district's rich cultural heritage, such as zapin, ghazal and kuda kepang, which also reflect the Johor identity and reinforce a patriotic atmosphere that is friendly to the people.
'The theme of the 2025 National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni, is translated comprehensively through a people-based programme approach throughout this event," she told Bernama.

Parliamentary Committee To Table Statement On Bullying In School Next Thursday

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Parliamentary Select Committee on Women, Children and Community Development will table a statement on the issue of bullying in schools next Thursday, following a briefing session with ministries and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) today. Its chairperson, Yeo Bee Yin said the statement would summarise the recommendations and views obtained from the hearing involving the Ministry of Education (KPM), the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN), as well as various NGOs and activists. "From today's briefing, among the most important recommendations that all NGOs and activists want is the establishment of a child-friendly bullying complaints portal at national level. "Currently, existing complaint systems such as Talian Kasih or online platforms are not child-friendly enough, especially in terms of direct communication or the 'chat' function. So, we will push for a complaint system that is more suitable for children," she said. She was met by the media after a special briefing programme on Tackling Bullying in Schools with Members of Parliament at Parliament today. Meanwhile, Yeo said the committee welcomed the government's efforts to examine the need to enact an Anti-Bullying Act which emphasises the establishment of a tribunal to hear bullying cases involving students and children. However, she stressed that it needs to be seen comprehensively and not just from a disciplinary perspective. "We know that victims of bullying have the potential to become bullies in the future if they are not given the appropriate emotional support. So, the act needs to balance the disciplinary (enforcement) aspect and also provide emotional support,' she said. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) chief children commissioner Dr Farah Nini Dusuki said the appointment of dormitory wardens should not be from among teachers to ensure the effectiveness of student management and the continuity of teaching sessions.

Gov't Has No Plans To Change Bank Rakyat Status To Commercial Bank

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The government has no plans to change the status of Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd (Bank Rakyat) from a cooperative bank to a commercial bank, says Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said that for now, Bank Rakyat remained a cooperative bank and any decision to change its status would depend on its members as well as other procedures. 'It involves several levels of approval if it were to transition to a commercial bank, first through a general meeting of members, secondly, Bank Rakyat is also subject to the Central Bank of Malaysia Act under Bank Negara (BNM). 'In addition, part of the process would need to go through the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM). What I can confirm is that Bank Rakyat remains a cooperative bank... there are no plans yet in that direction (to convert into a commercial bank),' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He explained the matter after Dr Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya) interjected to seek clarification regarding media reports on the intention of making Bank Rakyat a commercial bank. Meanwhile, Ewon said the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (KUSKOP) would establish a regulatory body and appropriate legal framework for the accreditation of social enterprises (SE) under Phase 2 of the Malaysia Social Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2029 (SEMy2030) for the 2026 to 2030 period. He said the SE rating process had been introduced since 2019 and was still being implemented. 'As of August 2025, there are 520 business entities, including MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) and cooperatives that have been accredited as SE under three levels, namely Accredited Social Enterprise ( Basic Social Enterprise (SE.B) and Tunas Social Enterprise (Tunas SE),' he said. On veterans' cooperatives, Ewon said that in 2024, a total of 82 veterans' cooperatives were registered with SKM, involving 9,059 members, with accumulated share capital amounting to RM2.5 million, total assets of RM10.3 million and earnings valued at RM696,470.

Water And Energy Supply Key To Attracting Investors

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The ability to provide sufficient water and energy supply is among the main attractions for investors in the semiconductor, data centre, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) sectors in Malaysia, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said this was further strengthened by the country's capacity to provide professional manpower expertise, which was a key strategic requirement for investors. 'These two aspects (water and energy) are very strategic, and I wish to emphasise that we will not be able to maintain Malaysia's credibility as a peaceful and competent nation if we cannot resolve matters related to water and energy.
