Castellanos Hits a Grand Slam and Phillies Complete 3-Game Sweep of Blue Jays With 11-4 Win

Al Arabiya11 hours ago

Nick Castellanos hit a grand slam, Zack Wheeler pitched six strong innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with an 11–4 victory on Sunday.
Alec Bohm also went deep, and Otto Kemp had four hits and two RBIs for Philadelphia, which has won five of six. Ernie Clement had three hits, and Will Robertson, making his major league debut, had one of three RBIs for Toronto.
Wheeler (7–2) allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out nine and walking none. Philadelphia's ace right-hander fanned the side in both the second and third innings.
The Phillies gave Wheeler early support with Trea Turner leading off with a double on the game's first pitch and scoring on the game's second pitch when Kyle Schwarber singled off José Berríos (2–3). Philadelphia tagged Toronto's right-hander for six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. Berríos had surrendered just one earned run over 18 2/3 innings in his last three starts.
Castellanos broke the game open in the sixth by belting an 85-mph slider over the wall in left, giving the Phillies a 10–2 cushion with his seventh homer of the season.
Key moment: Blue Jays left fielder Alan Roden robbed Castellanos of extra bases in the fifth with a stellar catch in which Roden went head first into the left-field wall. It appeared as if Roden's eye black left a mark on the padded wall. Roden lay on the ground for a short time but stayed in the game.
Key stat: .345 – Kemp's batting average in eight games since getting called up on June 7 to fill in for injured slugger Bryce Harper (wrist).
Up next:
Blue Jays: Open a six-game homestand on Tuesday against Arizona. RHP Chris Bassitt (7–3, 3.70) is scheduled to oppose RHP Brandon Pfaadt (8–4, 5.50).
Phillies: Play the first of a four-game series at Miami on Monday. RHP Mick Abel (1–0, 2.35) faces RHP Sandy Alcantara (3–7, 7.14).

Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to the Giants in a blockbuster deal

The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday in a blockbuster deal. Devers' agent, Nelson Montes de Oca, confirmed that the slugger had been traded to San Francisco. ESPN reported that the package of players going back to the Red Sox includes starter Jordan Hicks and left-hander Kyle Harrison. Devers, 28, is one of baseball's most feared hitters. He is batting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in 73 games after he connected for a solo drive in Boston's 2–0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday. Devers, a three-time All-Star, agreed to a $313.5 million, 10-year contract in January 2023, but his relationship with the Red Sox began to deteriorate when the team signed third baseman Alex Bregman during spring training. Devers insisted he was the team's third baseman before switching to designated hitter. When Triston Casas was sidelined by a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox approached Devers about filling in at first base. He declined and suggested the front office 'should do their jobs' and look for another player. A day after Devers' comments to the media about playing first, Red Sox owner John Henry, team president Sam Kennedy, and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow flew to Kansas City to meet with Devers and manager Alex Cora. Bregman has been out since May 23 with a strained right quadriceps, similar to his left quad strain that cost him 58 games for the Houston Astros in 2021. The Red Sox improved to 37–36 with their three-game sweep against New York. But they are fourth in the AL East, trailing the division-leading Yankees by 6 1/2 games. Devers first signed with Boston as an international free agent in August 2013. He was 20 when he made his major league debut with the Red Sox on July 25, 2017. He helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series and led the team in RBIs for five consecutive seasons from 2020–24. He has finished in the top 20 in voting for AL MVP five times. Devers is not the first Red Sox All-Star to be traded away: The team sent Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2020 season – just a year after he won the AL MVP award and led Boston to a franchise-record 108 wins and its fourth World Series title since 2004.

Aaron Civale Gets A Little Wild In White Sox Debut After Trade From Guardians

Aaron Civale struggled with his control in his first start for the Chicago White Sox, just two days after being traded from the Milwaukee Brewers. In a 2–1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday, Civale walked four of the first seven batters he faced. The 30-year-old pitcher finished with four walks, one shy of his career high, while allowing six hits and two runs in five innings. He threw 65 strikes and 39 balls. Chicago trailed 2–1 when Civale was replaced by Dan Altavilla to start the sixth. 'Not the cleanest,' Civale said. 'It's been a whirlwind of a week. First couple of innings just getting back out there and settling in and getting used to the new team, new catcher, and all of the above.' The White Sox acquired Civale a day after he expressed his desire to remain a starter–for the Brewers or another team–following his demotion to the Milwaukee bullpen. The Brewers made the move to open a spot in their rotation for highly touted prospect Jacob Misiorowski. Civale (1–3) pitched a scoreless first inning despite issuing three walks, aided by Wyatt Langford's double-play grounder. The fourth walk proved costly for Civale when Adolis García scored on Texas' first hit–a two-out double from Ezequiel Duran in the second inning. The Rangers extended their lead to 2–0 on Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly in the fifth. Civale allowed three hits in that inning but struck out Jake Burger to end the inning, stranding runners at second and third. 'Credit to him for grinding through that and getting through five innings,' said manager Will Venable, who was ejected after a couple of close calls went against Civale in the first inning. 'Not his sharpest day, but with these veteran guys that have experience, they're able to navigate tough situations.' All 123 of Civale's regular-season appearances in the major leagues have been starts. This is the third consecutive year he has been traded midseason. Milwaukee acquired him from Tampa Bay last year, and the Rays acquired him from Cleveland in 2023. 'It never gets easier,' Civale said. 'There's comfort in experience that you have, but every time it's new and it's a different challenge in itself. You're trying to make that adjustment as quick as you can. Was out there trying to compete, and I wasn't filling up the zone like I would have liked to.' Milwaukee sent Civale, who is eligible for free agency after this season, to the White Sox for first baseman Andrew Vaughn and $807,000 in cash. Civale stated he had no issues with anyone in the Brewers clubhouse or the coaching staff; he simply wanted to remain a starter, as he had been for all 86 of his minor-league appearances. The outing against Texas lowered Civale's ERA to 4.67 this season. He is earning $8 million this year and has allowed nine runs over 24 innings in five starts since returning from the injured list with a strained left hamstring. Civale threw only six of his first 19 pitches for strikes, and it was during this stretch that home plate umpire Marvin Hudson, the crew chief, gestured toward the Chicago dugout. Moments later, he ejected Venable. This was the second career ejection for Venable, a first-year manager, and it occurred on Father's Day. His first ejection was on Mother's Day. Venable seemed surprised when this was pointed out to him. 'I was unaware of that,' Venable said. 'But that is an interesting coincidence.'

Padres beat Diamondbacks 8-2 to snap 3-game losing streak

Nick Pivetta held Arizona to two hits over seven innings and Jake Cronenworth homered as the San Diego Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 8–2 on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak. Fernando Tatis Jr. had four hits, scored three runs, and stole a base for San Diego, which bounced back from Saturday's 8–7 loss in which Arizona scored five runs in the ninth. Pivetta (7–2) retired the first 12 Arizona batters before walking Josh Naylor on a full count to open the fifth. Eugenio Suárez followed with a 437-foot homer, his team-leading 21st, for the Diamondbacks' first hit. Pivetta struck out nine. After Xander Bogaerts' RBI double gave the Padres a 1–0 lead against Merrill Kelly, Cronenworth homered to right on the 10th pitch of the at-bat. Kelly (6–3) gave up seven hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out seven. The Diamondbacks saw their five-game winning streak end and they finished their homestand 5–1 ahead of a nine-game road trip. Anthony DeSclafani, signed by the Diamondbacks before the game, pitched in the majors for the first time since July 23, 2023, when he was with the Giants. He finished the game giving up two runs in 2 1/3 innings, including Elias Díaz's fourth homer leading off the ninth. Key moment: After Suárez's homer cut the Padres' lead in half, Díaz and Tatis doubled off Tayler Scott in the seventh to make it 5–2. Key stat: The Diamondbacks have homered in 10 consecutive games, the longest current streak in MLB. They have 18 homers since June 5 and are 6–4 in those games.
