And Just Like That recap: Genuine tragedy and full-frontal nudity

The Age27-06-2025
On a nighttime dog walk past the Guggenheim, Harry shares the news and tries to soothe a terrified Char with the facts: De Niro survived this! He is not going to die for a long time! But he doesn't want anyone knowing and is keen for life to proceed as normal, so Char just has to swallow it.
Over in the Gramercy, Carrie's back narrating life in her empty, echoing apartment from the perspective of 'The Woman' in her vague historical fiction novel. Her newly arrived downstairs neighbour isn't the only one in hell.
This storyline was triggering to me, someone with a heavy-footed upstairs neighbour and fear of confrontation. The only possible cure for my ills might've been seeing the montage of Carrie stomping about in fabulous outfits as her tenant (?) tosses and turns in a dark, water-damaged apartment downstairs, but sadly it was shot only from the calves down, before Duncan Reeves, revered writer of doorstop-sized historical biographies, bangs on the door to declare, 'You are always walking in heels! Have you no rugs?!'
At brunch, Carrie does the unthinkable when describing the scenario to her friends. While announcing that she has rights, she evokes the title of a legendary Sex and the City episode: ' A Woman's Right to Shoes'.

Remember that one? It was in that blissful season six period after Berger but before we had to endure Petrovsky? When the show said so much about single women and their coupled-up, new-parent friends who judged them for their expensive footwear proclivities? And it did it all in a compact half hour? I dream of those days.
Where was I?
Turns out Duncan is like the Ron Chernow of this universe, and he's also 'a lot of fun' according to the disembodied head sending texts as Samantha Jones. He lives it up in London for half the year, then comes to New York to write about Margaret Thatcher, fuelled only by stew, for the other six months.
The endless back and forth of 'please walk a bit quieter' / 'no I shan't I have to wear heels always' is just another example of the show's writers' memory loss, considering Carrie was already forced into flats in season one after her hip surgery.
Miranda was an awful visitor then – remember her and Che in the kitchen, grunting into each other's mouths while Carrie tried to pee in a Snapple bottle? (My god, what is this show?) – and she remains one now.
Once Carrie remembers she has 'the extra rooms' and offers her lifelong best friend a place to crash, they're both on their absolute worst behaviour.

Carrie expects Miranda to take HER shoes off and says, 'I know how to walk in mine.' Miranda stalks around the house fully nude like one of the bad guys in It Follows and makes no attempt to cover up. She eats Carrie's yoghurt and banana. Carrie knocks a Coke ('My last Mexican Coke!') onto the new table (I can't even get into the Aidan's-thumbs-down-table of it all any more, we need to have some standards) and mops it up with Miranda's work papers (?!) and then Miranda mops it up with Carrie's silk scarf. These women both need brain scans.

Kristin Davis was set up on a date with Matthew Perry

Kristin Davis was once set up on a date with Matthew Perry. The Sex and the City actress has recalled how a mutual attorney friend she shared with the star - who tragically died aged 54 in 2023 - arrange for them to go on a blind date. Speaking on iHeartRadio's Are You A Charlotte? podcast, she said: 'He's not my lawyer, but he's a nice lawyer, and I've been set up with Matthew Perry. "And this is like '98, '99, '97 maybe. I feel like it was between Melrose Place, which I did before [Sex and the] City, and it was at a house. It was a dinner party. It was so low-key." The party was filled with "a bunch of Hollywood people", but she can't remember any of the other guests. She added: "I don't even know who was there other than this lawyer and Matthew." Kristin enjoyed her time chatting to the Friends star, as he opened up about his experiences on the sitcom. She recalled: 'Matthew's lovely. He sits next to me. And he's talking about how thrilled he is, how happy they are on the set at Friends, and he was doing a film with Salma Hayek. "I was like, 'Wow, he's so happy.'' Although they didn't pursue anything romantic, the couple's conversation gave her pause for thought about her own career. She explained: "I had been around Melrose and it wasn't the happiest place in a way. "There were 15 series regulars. Everyone had the feeling they might get cut, so it was that competitive and stressy." Things could have been very different, as Kristin previously revealed she actually auditioned for the role of Monica - who became the wife of Matthew's character Chandler Bing - but missed out. She said: "I think I was one of, like, 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica and Courteney Cox got her." Kristin and Courteney were actually "in the same yoga class at the time" and they used to socialise together too, while she can still remember Courteney's reaction to landing the role. She revealed: "One day, Courteney was like, 'Hey, guys. Do you want to come car shopping with me?' We were like, 'Wow, car shopping!' "[Courteney] said, 'I did this pilot, I'm feeling really good about it. I think I'm going to buy a Porsche.' "We were like, 'Wow, is she for real?' It was 'Friends', and it did go very well."

Who would Stephen King want to play him in the story of his life?

Legendary horror writer Stephen King has picked Christopher Lloyd or Kyle MacLachlan to play him in the film of his life. The 77-year-old legendary horror author has considered what a biopic about him could be like, but although he would love to be portrayed by a "good-looking leading man" like Brad Pitt he thinks Back to the Future actor Lloyd or Twin Peaks star MacLachlan would be better suited to play him. In a fan conducted interview with The Guardian newspaper, King said: "I would love to have a good-looking leading man, but I don't think Brad Pitt would do it. He is a lot better-looking than me. I'm a little bit on the elderly side now, so I'd say maybe Christopher Lloyd or – who's the guy in Twin Peaks, the main tall guy? Kyle MacLachlan." King's books have been turned into multiple movies with successes including Carrie, It, Misery, The Green Mile and The Shining - which was directed by Stanley Kubrick but famously disliked by the writer. The latest adaptation of one of his books is new fantasy drama movie The Life of Chuck, directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mia Sara, Carl Lumbly, Benjamin Pajak, Jacob Tremblay and Mark Hamill. After decades of seeing his books turned into films, King still gets excited when someone is inspired to bring one of his stories to the screen. He said: "I'm still excited when somebody makes a movie out of something that I've done. I was excited to see The Monkey earlier this year, and The Life of Chuck. I'm very excited to see The Running Man, which was filmed in England. I don't write with movies in mind. I just write what seems like a good story that people and I will enjoy. Then whatever happens to it happens. That's fine. I like the movies, but I think they're different things, like apples and oranges, so to speak." Before making it as a horror writer, King had numerous jobs, but no matter how mundane they may seem he insists you can always find inspiration for stories. Recalling a job he had in a mill, he shared: "I got some inspiration when I worked in a mill. We had to clean the place out and there were a lot of big rats in the basement. I wrote a story about that, and then I was off and running. "I think any kind of a job that is manual labour – what in the US we call a blue-collar worker – is good experience for a writer. You don't want a job where you can sit down in a clean, well-lit room and not have to clean up s***."

Sarah Jessica Parker claps back at And Just Like That hate-watchers after controversial series finale

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Sarah Jessica Parker is unbothered by viewers who love to hate-watch And Just Like That after the disastrous season finale aired. 'I don't think I have the constitution to have spent a lot of time thinking about that,' she told the New York Times in an interview published on Friday, per Page Six. 'We always worked incredibly hard to tell stories that were interesting or real. I guess I don't really care,' the Hocus Pocus actress, 60, added. 'And the reason I don't care is because it has been so enormously successful, and the connections it has made with audiences have been very meaningful.' The series wrapped up for good recently. Picture: Marc Piasecki/WireImage The finale sparked a very mixed reaction from fans. Picture: Supplied Sex and the City debuted in 1998 on HBO and starred Parker (as Carrie Bradshaw), Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York) and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes) as best friends navigating relationships in New York City. The HBO show's reboot, And Just Like That, premiered in 2023 and featured all of the original cast except Cattrall. Though it became the network's most-watched series debut upon release, viewership quickly declined due to the outdated themes and empty attempts to remain culturally relevant. Two weeks before the season three finale, HBO announced the series was ending and would not return for a fourth chapter. After the final episode titled 'Party of One' aired last week, it was met with wide criticism over the storyline of Bradshaw exiting the show as a single woman. Parker has defended the final episodes. Bethenny Frankel blasted the Sex and the City revival series, labelling it the 'worst show ever' in an 'unfiltered' rant posted on Instagram on Friday. 'This is the worst show ever. Honestly, this is 'from hero to zero'. It's just so forced,' the former Real Housewives of New York City star told her followers in a clip. Frankel, 54, also wrote across the video, 'And just like that SUCKS.' '25 pounds of disaster in a 5-pound bag — and yep, it explodes,' she captioned the post, referring to the series finale that featured a clogged toilet. The Bethenny Ever After alum also criticised the show's fashion and characters. 'Everybody's just a weird caricature of themselves and it's just the most bizarre, forced show,' Frankels said, adding that she also took issue with the show's 'woke' storylines. 'Put it in the back and shoot it. Put it to rest,' she concluded. This article originally appeared in Page Six and was reproduced with permission.
