Tony Awards highlights: Radio City becomes the room where it happens for a 'Hamilton' reunion

Washington Post3 days ago

NEW YORK — Even the ushers at Radio City Music Hall seemed thrilled to be in the room where it happened.
A few of them could be seen grooving, like everyone else at Sunday's Tony Awards, to the 'Hamilton' reunion performance — a medley of some of that blockbuster musical's biggest songs, performed by the original cast. The occasion was the 10th Broadway anniversary of Lin-Manuel Miranda's juggernaut that spawned multiple touring companies, a West End production and a live-capture film — and is still going strong.

Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman Confirmed For SPACEBALLS 2 with Keke Palmer Joining the Mayhem — GeekTyrant

It has been confirmed that Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are returning as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet in Spaceballs 2 ! This brand-new film comes from Amazon MGM Studios, and it was previously announced that Mel Brooks is back as Yogurt. This is awesome because I never thought that Moranis would come out of retirement for this, but he is and I couldn't be more excited! Adding to the cast is Keke Palmer, whose role is still being kept top secret. Amazon isn't saying a word about who she's playing or what the story is, but she's officially on board. The sequel is being directed by Josh Greenbaum ( Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar ) and written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, who's also producing and expected to star. The producing team includes Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, Mel Brooks, and Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez serving as executive producers. The movie is described as 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.' So... interpret that however you want. This marks a rare return to screen for Moranis, who's been largely absent from Hollywood since the late '90s. He stepped away from acting to focus on raising his children after the passing of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky. Aside from a 2020 Mint Mobile commercial with Ryan Reynolds, Moranis hasn't taken on many projects—making this comeback a big deal for longtime fans of Ghostbusters , Honey, I Shrunk the Kids , and Little Shop of Horrors . Gad responded to the news via an Instagram post shortly after the story broke. "My phone has never exploded as hard as it did today. We are very excited! Early days still, but working with the legendary Mel freaking Brooks to make something worthy of this franchise and his legacy has been a dream come true. @benjisamit @cubanmissiledh @ @kevinsalter1 and I worship at the alter of all things Brooks and we are doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you've waited 37 long years for. EVERYTHING." The original Spaceballs debuted in 1987 and wasn't a box office monster as it pulled in just over $38 million worldwide, but it's grown into a sci-fi parody classic. The film spoofed Star Wars , 2001: A Space Odyssey , and other genre staples. It was silly, it was quotable, and it's only gotten better with age. This new installment is set for theatrical release in 2027, forty years after the original. Source: Deadline

Instagram grid customization is coming next week

Instagram is making it easier for users to express themselves through music, reels, and says it's 'exploring' ways to support posts that can appear on your profile without being pushed to followers' feeds. A feature rolling out today allows users to automatically share the name and artist of the Spotify song they're currently listening to in their Instagram Notes — the temporary status updates that appear above profile pictures in Instagram DMs. Meta spokesperson Christine Pai confirmed that starting next week, Instagram is rolling out the ability for users to rearrange the order of posts in their profile grids. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri had previously teased these capabilities in January. In a new blog post, Mosseri said this is part of its 'Anyway' campaign launch that focuses on helping to 'reduce pressure and supercharge creativity' for creators by helping them to share their music tastes and gain confidence with creating content before pushing it to their followers. Unlike the Instagram feature that allows users to manually add a song clip that followers can listen to, the new Spotify feature continuously updates the song title in real time to give followers a better idea of the creator's music tastes and mood. It also gives Instagram another location to place an 'add to Spotify' button as part of the partnership that Meta announced last November. Mosseri said the platform is also working on new features that aim to help users manage the 'excitement and nervousness that come with putting something out into the world.' The reels experiment that allowed some creators to test their videos on new audiences before sharing them with followers is now available to everyone. Mosseri said that 40 percent of creators who tested the feature started posting reels more frequently, encouraging Instagram users to explore their creativity without the pressure of sharing bad reel ideas with their friends and fans.

Here's the $2,000 fully AI-generated ad that aired during the NBA Finals

If you've been on social media lately, you might've seen the unsettling AI slop videos showing AI-generated people in wild scenarios or just speaking a bunch of nonsense. On Wednesday night, the betting platform Kalshi decided to take this trend outside the social sphere by putting a nonsensical AI-generated ad in front of the millions of viewers watching the NBA Finals — and it apparently cost just $2,000 to make. The AI-generated highlights various things 'people' are betting on, like whether the Oklahoma City Thunder or Indiana Pacers will win the NBA Finals, how many hurricanes will occur this year, and whether the price of eggs will go up this month. It flashes between scenes of an elderly man wearing a cowboy hat while carrying a chihuahua, someone swimming in a pool of eggs, and an alien chugging beer. In a post on X, PJ Accetturo, who identifies himself as an 'AI Filmmaker,' says Kalshi hired him to create the ad using Google's text-to-video generator Veo 3. (My colleague Allison Johnson recently called Veo 3 'a slop monger's dream.') 'This took about 300–400 generations to get 15 usable clips,' Acetturo writes. 'One person, 2-3 days. That's a 95% cost reduction vs traditional ads.' Accetturo outlines his process for creating the ad, which he says involved writing a script and then asking Gemini to generate a shot list with prompts for Veo 3. 'I always tell it to return 5 prompts at a time—any more than that and the quality starts to slip,' Accetturo writes. After generating the prompts, Accetturo says he pastes them into Veo 3 and puts together the ads using a video editing app like CapCut or Adobe Premiere Pro. It's only been weeks since the launch of Veo 3, and if we're already seeing AI-generated ads on TV, there's likely much more to come. There are already plenty of videos floating around social media that are hard to peg as AI, too, not to mention the AI tools companies like Amazon, Meta, and even Netflix want to give advertisers.
