B'desh: Students demand Environmental Advisor's resignation over delay in construction of permanent university campus
The public university's students carried out a road blockade on the Dhaka-Pabna highway, demanding approval of the DPP (Development Project Proposal) for a permanent university campus.
Reportedly, the university has been running in a rented building for almost nine years, and yet, the construction of a permanent campus has not started.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan had visited the proposed site for the permanent campus of the university on July 16 and had said, "This demand is logical, but in Bangladesh, one must persist for a long time to achieve anything."
This further enraged the students and led to protests and roadblocks.
The students who have long been demanding a permanent campus. However, the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government has not yet allocated any funds for the construction, reports the leading Bangladeshi daily, The Dhaka Tribune.
The students gathered by the highway near the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) bus stand in Siraganj, Dhaka, sitting in protest on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
They formed a human chain and stated that the delay in approval for the DPP is "disappointing" and questioned why, of all universities, they are being deprived of a campus.
Traffic on the highway came to a standstill due to ongoing protests, causing severe congestion. This situation resulted in long lines of vehicles forming on both sides of the road, leaving drivers and passengers in distress.
On Saturday, students wore black badges and formed a human chain, rejecting the day program offered by Rabindra University in protest against the administration for not meeting their demands.
The university administration, in response, postponed examinations scheduled for the ongoing recruitment process, along with written and oral exams for Bangla and Economics, as well as Management departments.

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Parambans Singh Romana on Wednesday challenged dissident party leader and Dakha legislator Manpreet Singh Ayali to deny the claims that he "got his land excluded from the land pooling scheme", while the adjoining land belonging to poor farmers was notified for acquisition. Addressing a press conference, Romana said Ayali was "badly compromised" and became "totally silent on the AAP govt's land grabbing scheme whereby it wanted to take forcible possession of 24,000 acres of land in Ludhiana district alone because the govt adjusted him and excluded all land controlled by him from the scheme". "The Ayali family developed a colony – Avanta Enclave over 28 acres of land during the course of which it committed several illegalities, including a built-up area of 70% instead of 55% as mandated under law," he said. AAP, BJP spar over waterlogging and desilting audit
New Delhi: AAP and BJP sparred again on Wednesday over the issue of waterlogging on key roads after a heavy spell of rain the day before. AAP's Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned the fate of crores of rupees spent by various agencies on the desilting of drains and asked if Delhi govt conducted a third-party audit, as mandated by Delhi High Court. BJP said the responsibility of the audit lay with the previous AAP govt, as it was ordered by the HC in April 2024, and the report was to be submitted by June 30 last year. This clearly shows that for the past 10 years, Kejriwal govt was involved in a scam under the guise of desilting," Sachdeva said. "Being a minister in that very govt, Bharadwaj must answer why the audit report was not made public by June 30, 2024," he added. Malda migrant worker's family backs Mamata claim of harassment by Delhi police
Family members of the migrant worker who had alleged harassment and torture by the Delhi police on Wednesday returned to West Bengal and held a press conference in Kolkata claiming that they were referred as 'Bangladeshis' and asked to pay ₹25,000 by the men posing as police personnel. Sanjur Parveen and other members of the family who hails from Chanchal in Malda district of West Bengal held a press conference at the Trinamool Congress party office in Kolkata and said that the personnel of Delhi police asked her to chant 'Jai Shri Ram. Several leaders of Trinamool Congress including chairperson of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh and, State's Minister Firhad Hakim, Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor were among the leaders who were present at the press conference. 'Four people came to our house and they introduced themselves as police. They wanted to see our Aadhaar cards. They referred to us as Bangladeshis and said that we should not leave the area. We told them that we are not Bangladeshi but Indians,' Ms. Parveen said. She added that the next day four others came with two women and tried to take my child away. 'There I was asked to say 'Jai Shri Ram'. I said, I am a Muslim. I cannot say that. After that, they demanded ₹25,000 from me,' Ms. Parveen said. The Malda resident added that she along with her child were assaulted. The press conference by the family of migrant workers assumes significance as the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on July 27 shared a 46-second video on social media and accused Delhi police of brutally beating up a kid and his mother, who are members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. The Delhi police said that the video shared by the Chief Minister about migrant workers alleging harassment in the national capital was fabricated. DCP(East) Abhishek Dhania, the Delhi Police officer, said the woman, identified as Sanjanu Parveen, made the video at the request of his relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal and is a political worker. After the Delhi police statement, the West Bengal Chief Minister on Tuesday doubled down on her assertion on Tuesday and urged the family to return to the State. Reacting to the press conference of the migrant workers family, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that the Trinamool Congress should lodge a complaint against the Delhi police. The contending claims come at a time when hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal have alleged harassment and torture at the hands of police on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals in different States including Delhi. In a related development, the Trinamool Congress claimed that 300 migrant workers have returned to the State from Haryana. '@BJP4India will pay for every baton blow, every racial slur, every illegal detention. The countdown to their downfall has begun, and Bengal will lead the charge,' the party added.
