Man arrested for fraudulent activities with two hotels in Boone, police say
A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with fraudulent activities with two hotels, according to the Boone Police Department.
Police said an investigation revealed Corey Paul Connelly had illegally obtained financial information from clients of a business he was once employed at.
On Feb. 19 and Feb. 21, Connelly used stolen credit card information to obtain property valued at $34,216.03 from one hotel and $26,407 from another hotel, according to police.
Police said some of that financial information was illegally obtained from various businesses and individuals engaged in relief work following Hurricane Helene.

Connelly was arrested on Feb. 26 and charged with two felonious counts of obtaining property by false pretense. He was also charged with felonious possession of methamphetamine.
He was placed in the Watauga County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.

Neighbors, former coworker reacts to death of Lenoir man killed in Catawba County mass shooting
LENOIR, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – We are learning more about the man who died in the Catawba County mass shooting from neighbors and a past coworker. Shawn Hood was killed when someone opened fire at a house party in Catawba County, while 11 other people were injured. On Hood's driveway Monday, we found a project he was finishing up. Several neighbors we spoke with said he kept to himself. One neighbor we spoke with did not wish to be identified. MORE | 'He tried to do some work there by himself and he just had some other friends from the outside come over and say hi or hang out with him,' the neighbor said. 'That was about it.' The neighbor said at one point Hood lived in a home on Idlewood St. in Lenoir with his wife and son, but the couple later divorced. Other neighbors we spoke with didn't even know that Hood died this weekend. No neighbor seemed to know why he was at that party. MORE | 'I can't believe it,' the neighbor said. 'What was the 58-year-old doing with a bunch of teenagers? I don't know.' A former coworker we spoke with said during COVID they worked from home, reviewing loans for the Small Business Administration. When their contracts ended last year, she said they did loan reviews for small businesses following Hurricane Helene through a nonprofit. She adds that Hood played baseball and gave lessons in the community – and that he was a nice guy who did not deserve to be murdered. 'It has nothing to do with gun violence,' the neighbor said. 'It had to do with a vengeance attitude. Stupid kid with guns. The guns didn't kill the people, the people killed the people.' Man arrested for shooting during Hurricane Helene aftermath
UNION, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate man was arrested Friday in connection with a shooting reported the day after Hurricane Helene. The Union Police Department charged Kennedy Jamar Garrett, of Union, with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after he was identified as the suspected shooter in the incident on Sept. 28. Officers responded to a home on Union Boulevard for a shooting victim. Emergency officials located the victim and immediately started treatment. The victim reported to authorities that he was cleaning debris from his yard when he was approached by Garrett, 'trash-talking.' The victim admitted that he punched Garrett in the mouth because Garrett was asked to leave his property, but the suspect refused. Following the assault, police said Garrett presented a pistol and attempted to shoot the victim. According to the incident report, the first shot misfired. Garrett supposedly pulled the trigger a second time and shot the victim in the leg. The victim was taken to Spartanburg Regional for his injuries, while he subsequently provided a written statement to law enforcement. Man charged in Watauga County methamphetamine bust
A man was charged with two counts of felony trafficking of methamphetamine and one felony maintaining a vehicle to store controlled substances on Friday, according to the Boone Police Department. Christopher Wayne Ellison, 36, was arrested Monday along with 30-year-old Destiny Amber Salmons, according to a release from Boone PD. Police said they stopped the pair in the parking lot of United Muffler in Boone where a K-9 alerted officials to the drugs inside their car. Inside, they found 52 grams of suspected methamphetamine and narcotics paraphernalia, according to police. Officers said Salmons was charged with felony trafficking in methamphetamine and felony possession with intent to sell. Ellison's latest charges come in addition to his initial charges of misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia, officials said. The Boone man received an additional $500,000 secured bond.
