Chandigarh court awards death penalty to man who raped and killed minor girl

Indian Express3 days ago

A fast-track special court for rape and Poscso cases in Chandigarh on Tuesday awarded the death sentence to a 40-year-old man it found guilty of raping and murdering a minor girl in 2024.
The special court presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Yashika convicted Hira Lal under Indian Penal Code sections related to kidnapping, rape, and murder, and under section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
A detailed order in the matter was yet to be released by the court.
As per police, Hira Lal has two wives and is the father of five children, the eldest being 13 years old. The police said he was cheating on both his wives, as neither knew about the other.
According to the prosecution, the rape victim's body, with her throat slit and multiple stab wounds, was discovered near a dumping site in Ram Darbar in January 2024, three days after she went missing. An autopsy later confirmed rape.
The girl was kidnapped from near her home by Hira Lal, who then took her to his house and committed the crime. After the girl's body was found, the police identified Lal on the basis of CCTV footage. His house was found locked. The police broke into the house and found inside the victim's slippers, which then confirmed that the child had been brought there.
After a seven-day manhunt, the police arrested Hira Lal, a native of Uttar Pradesh, from Bihar.
During the trial, the defence counsel argued that Hira Lal had been falsely implicated in the FIR. The court, however, held him guilty.

3 Dalit minors tied to flagpole, assaulted in Karnataka; 8 held

Three Dalit minor boys were allegedly tied to a flagpole and brutally assaulted by a mob of upper-caste villagers in Harogeri village under the Naragund police station limits in Karnataka's Gadag district. The assault, which took place on May 28, surfaced only after videos began circulating on social media, triggering widespread outrage. According to police, the attack was triggered by allegations that the boys had sent obscene messages to a girl from an upper-caste community. Using this as justification, a mob of around 60 people allegedly tied the boys to a gram panchayat flagpole and beat them with ropes, sticks, and slippers. The attack left the boys with serious injuries and swelling across their bodies. 'We registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and BNS provisions on May 30 and have arrested eight persons so far. Many accused are absconding, but we arrested four more on Friday and are continuing our efforts to trace the remaining suspects.' A separate POCSO case has also been registered against 30 people in connection with the incident, police said. The brutality didn't stop with the assault. According to the families of the victims, when they attempted to intervene, they were threatened and chased away by members of the dominant caste. 'Untouchability is still very much alive in our village,' one of the victim's parents told HT. 'This incident is just another example of the discrimination we face every day.' It was only after the visuals went viral online that authorities moved to take formal action.

Teacher spreads fake story of sexual assault on student

Thiruvananthapuram: Kilimanoor police registered a Pocso case against a woman teacher on Friday for spreading a fake sexual assault story against a female Plus One student at Madavoor. Following the incident, the school management suspended 42-year-old teacher, after finding her allegations baseless. She had cooked up a story of a 35-year-old male teacher sexually assaulting the student in the school and impregnating her. Police said the accused teacher committed the crime to throw her male colleague out of the school so that she could be part of the school management. "There were some issues between the accused and her colleague over school management's powers. The accused and her husband, who is also a teacher at the school, wanted to be a part of the management and the male teacher was against it. By cooking up the story, she wanted to shunt him out," said police. The accused shared the defamatory story in the school WhatsApp groups and also aired a video about it on a YouTube channel, with images of the girl and her alleged 'tormentor'. The girl's parents have submitted complaints to the chief minister's office, child welfare committee and SC/ST commission. In Jan this year, a lab attendance book went missing and a lab assistant was suspended for it. The two teachers had quarrelled with each other over the incident. The girl's parents alleged that the accused teacher had raised similar allegations against her colleague last year too.
