Oman targets bigger AI role in economy with new initiatives
Hassan bin Fida Hussain al Lawati, Head of National Programme for AI and Advanced Digital Technologies at Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), said the programme benefits economic, development and service sectors, directly impacting citizens' quality of life.
He said the programme aims to increase the number of technology companies specialising in AI by 20% each year. The number of such companies now exceeds 25, up from fewer than ten at the programme's launch last year. Cumulative investments in AI projects have reached about RO60mn over the last four years, with annual investment expected to grow by 20%. Hassan bin Fida Hussain al Lawati
In September 2024, the Council of Ministers approved the National Programme for AI and Advanced Digital Technologies as part of a broader strategy built on three pillars, the first of which is promoting AI adoption in economic and development sectors. The second focuses on localising AI technologies and developing national expertise to position Oman as a technology producer. The third pillar governs AI and digital applications with a human-centred approach to ensure ethical and effective use under flexible laws.
Lawati noted that Oman moved up five places in the Oxford Insight Government AI Readiness Index, ranking 45th globally out of 193 countries in 2024, compared to 50th in 2023. It ranks fifth in the Middle East and North Africa and fourth in the Gulf. Oman aims to join the world's top 30 countries in this field, he added.
He further informed that MTCIT, in partnership with University of Technology and Applied Sciences, launched an initiative called AI Makers to encourage work in the field and reward top researchers, scientific papers and projects in AI.
MTCIT also introduced a competition called 'Engineer it with AI' to support local development in generative AI, enhance national skills and encourage innovation. The contest aims to boost economic returns by helping new start-ups and raising national performance indicators.
In addition, an initiative called Humanising AI has been launched to maintain a balance between technical progress and the human aspect of service delivery, ensuring inclusivity for all groups in society.

With licensed smart apps, Oman's taxis are secure, transparent
Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology launched the campaign called 'It Makes a Difference' based on the results of a consultation conducted on the experiences of licensed taxi apps. The campaign aims to encourage taxi drivers to join licensed apps as part of efforts to regulate the sector and improve service quality and passenger safety through secure and transparent digital solutions. The transportation sector in the Sultanate of Oman is undergoing a significant transformation with the increased use of licensed smart apps, aligning with national trends towards digitisation and technology in vital sectors. Within this framework, the ministry continues its efforts to regulate the sector and ensure its sustainability. To contribute to the development of taxi apps that meet aspirations, enhance community participation and advance digital transportation services in Oman, the ministry evaluated the experiences of licensed taxi apps from June 22 to July 22 of this year. The ministry aims to regulate taxi activity in Oman and has announced that taxi applications licensed by the ministry are available on demand, whether through instant or pre-booking, after meeting the requirements and provisions of the Land Transport Law's regulations. Studies conducted by the ministry have shown that regulating the taxi sector has directly improved drivers' incomes by providing them with more stable employment opportunities. It has also led to more efficient and convenient transportation services for users. Passengers can now benefit from advantages such as tracking their journey, knowing fares in advance, and easily accessing taxis at any time and place, increasing safety and transparency in this vital sector. The smart on-demand applications provide a system for tracking and monitoring the journey's route, with fixed prices determined before the trip, while ensuring user privacy and security. The applications also allow users to message the driver through the app and cancel requests with ease. They also offer various services, including basic trips, economical trips, monthly contracts and an independent system for processing taxi requests for institutions and companies. Starting in early April of this year, all white and orange taxis are required to join electronic platforms, register and operate through approved vehicle booking applications to improve service quality and provide secure digital solutions. This initiative aims to modernise the public transportation system, improve taxi services and enhance transparency in fare pricing. Additionally, this transformation will increase passenger access to taxis through digital platforms, ushering Omani taxis into a new era of digital transformation.

Oman plans unified EV charging app, invites public to name it
Muscat – To accelerate green mobility ambitions, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched a nationwide community survey to choose a name for Oman's first unified national electric vehicle (EV) charging application. Currently under development, the platform will serve as the central access point for all EV charging stations in the sultanate, integrating services offered by various operators under one digital umbrella. Supervised by MTCIT, the application aims to streamline access for EV users, offering a seamless charging experience across Oman and, in the future, expanding to cover Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The ministry has invited the public to participate in an online survey to select the app's name from a shortlist or suggest alternatives. The shortlisted names include EVNet OM – a technical name highlighting a unified national EV network, NEVO – short for National Electric Vehicles Oman, EV-Go OM – a marketing-friendly option suggesting readiness and movement, ECO – representing both environmental focus and electric charging, and EV Connect OM – emphasising the user-station connectivity within a single network. Participants are also asked to indicate whether they currently own an EV, plan to purchase one or are simply contributing to the national conversation. The survey reflects Oman's inclusive approach to sustainable transformation, inviting citizens to shape what the ministry called a 'pioneering national identity' in the green transport sector. The survey period ends on August 9. This initiative is in line with MTCIT's broader strategy to achieve zero carbon neutrality in the transport sector. In January, the ministry announced that by the end of 2024 Oman had introduced 25 initiatives and pilot programmes focused on legislation, governance and infrastructure development for sustainable mobility. These include the use of biofuel in public transport, installation of over 150 EV chargers nationwide and registration of more than 1,500 EVs. Trials for hydrogen-powered vehicles are also underway. Looking ahead, the ministry aims to operationalise the unified EV charging platform this year. Future goals include replacing government vehicles with electric models and establishing dedicated green lanes for hydrogen trucks. MTCIT has called on the public to share the survey widely and support Oman's transition to a greener transport ecosystem. 'Your feedback matters to us,' the ministry noted in its statement. 'Be a partner in the green transformation journey towards a shared Gulf future.'
